Instrument LongevityThrough Proper Care

Your purchase of KMedicinstruments represents a considerable investment.By following these guide-lines you will protect yourinvestment and ensure manyyears of productive and satisfactory performance.

Maintaining the Surface

KMedic Certified stainlesssteel surgical instrumentsare made of corrosionresistant, high-grade spe-cialty steels that are espe-cially selected to meet thevarying requirements ofcutting, clamping, retract-ing and chiseling.

A special characteristic ofthese steels is that theyform passive layers on theinstrument’s surface, whichprotect against corrosion. These layers act as an invis-ible patina and with repeat-ed use and exposure to air, the instrumentsbecome increasingly cor-rosion resistant.

While every effort is madeduring the manufacturingprocess to ensure thatinstruments are corrosionresistant, the real key tolongevity is proper mainte-nance. Toward that end,you must do your part bycaring for your instruments. In a sense, the name“stainless steel” is a misno-mer, one which should notbe taken literally. When notproperly treated, steel canrust or stain, reducing thelife of the instrument orrendering it useless. Thefollowing sections outlineproper instrument care.

New Instruments

Newly purchased instru-ments must be cleaned, lubricated and autoclavedimmediately before use.

Correct Use

Obvious as it sounds, itbears repeating: Instrumentsare designed for a particu-lar purpose and should beused only for that purpose.Even the strongest instru-ment can be damagedwhen used inappropriately,i.e., when a nail splitter isused to cut wire.

Water and Stainless Steel

Ordinary tap water containsminerals that can cause discoloration and staining. Therefore, we recommendthe use of distilled waterfor cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing and rinsing instru-ments. To avoid staining, use a cleaning solution witha pH near neutral (7).

Manual Cleaning and Soaking

When handling instruments,be very careful not to damage their fine tips andmechanisms. If instru-ments have been exposedto blood, tissue, saline or other foreign matter, youmust rinse them in warm(not hot) water before thesesubstances are allowed to dry. After rinsing, im-merse them in a cleaningand disinfecting solution.

Because many compounds, including certain chemicals, are highly corrosive tostainless steel, rinse anddry instruments immediate-ly, in case they have comein contact with any poten-tially harmful substances.

If no ultrasonic cleaner isavailable, clean the instru-ment very carefully. Payparticular attention whencleaning boxlocks, ser-rations, hinges and otherhard-to-reach areas. Usenylon (not steel) brushes, such as KM 39-684, andwarm (not hot) cleaningsolutions. Follow themanufacturer’s instructionsfor the preparation of thecleaning solutions.Remember to change these solutions daily.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

Ultrasonic is the mosteffective and efficient wayto clean your instruments. To maximize its effective-ness, your instrumentsshould be cleaned of allvisible debris before theyare put into an ultrasoniccleaner. Please note thatchrome-plated instrumentsmay rust if they are notdried and lubricated imme-diately after sterilization. In addition, we recommendthe following:

Do not mix dissimilar met-als, i.e., chrome and stain-less, in the same cycle.

Open all instruments soratchets and boxlocks are accessible.

Avoid piling instrumentson top of each other whenloading.

Remove and rinse off in-struments immediatelyafter the cycle is finished.

Dry instruments immedi-ately after rinsing and allowthem to air-dry thoroughly.

Lubricate all moving parts.

Instrument Checkup

The best time to review thecondition of your instru-ments is after they havebeen cleaned and lubri-cated and have cooled off.Consider the following:

Function:Splitters, nippers and scis-sors must cut cleanly andclose properly. Needleholders and clamps mustengage properly and meetcorrectly at the tips.

Surface:Carefully inspect surfacesfor any sign of staining, cracking or other irregulari-ties. Common sources ofstaining are:

Inadequate cleaning

Mixing dissimilar metals

Impurities in the water

Unsuitable or improperpreparation and usage ofcleaning and disinfecting or maintenance agents

Non-compliance with oper-ating procedures of cleaningand sterilizing equipment

Aluminum Trays

To avoid development of“Aluminum Salt” on yourAl-trays, use only distilledwater in your autoclave.Already developed“Aluminum Salt” is verydifficult to remove whichmight cause damage ofthe anodized Al-surface.Any instrument or trayshould be cleaned ofdebris with a non-aciddetergent (neutral pH)prior to autoclaving.

Lubrication andAutoclaving

All instruments must beproperly cleaned beforeautoclaving. Then theirmoving parts, such as box-locks and hinges, shouldbe well lubricated.Be careful to use surgicallubricants and not indus-trial oils. Always sterilizeinstruments in the open, unlocked position. We recommend that instru-ments be wrapped in clothand then placed in thecontainer, or that a clothbe put on the bottom ofthe pan to absorb moisture. The cloth should be pH(7)neutral and have no residueof detergents. Finally, avoid sudden cooling ofyour instruments.

Cold Sterilizing orDisinfecting

Prolonged immersion indisinfecting or sterilizingsolution can damage yoursurgical instruments. We recommend that you donot soak your instrumentsfor longer than 20 minutes. To render the instrumentssterile and ready for use, usean autoclave cycle.

Caution: Instruments with tungstencarbide inserts, such aswire cutters, needle holdersand TC scissors, shouldnever be immersed in ster-ilizing solutions containingBenzyl AmmoniumChloride (BAC). BAC willsoften and dissolve thetungsten carbide.

Never use bleach as it willcause severe pitting.

Storage

Once your instruments arethoroughly dry, store themin a clean, dry environ-ment. Never put them inareas where chemicals may emit corrosive vaporsor where temperature and moisture variationscould cause condensationon the instruments.

KMedic Instrument Care Checklist

1. Rinse and soak soiled in-struments immediatelyafter use. Thoroughlyclean before autoclaving.

2. Autoclave and sterilizeinstruments in an openposition.

3. Do not stack or entangle instruments.

4. Follow recommenda-tions made by equip-ment and solutionsmanufacturers.

KMedic: In the Tradition of the Masters

Instrument making is a highly developed craft, and thecraftspeople who make KMedic surgical instruments arethe modern heirs to this ancient art. It is also a vocationthat has respected its traditions over the centuries. So, while new techniques have kept pace with advances insurgical practices, the essence of the craft has changedvery little. Today, computers and other advanced techno-logy aid in the manufacture of instruments, but it remainsthe skills of gifted instrument makers that turn raw steelinto the finely honed tools...ready for the surgeon’s hand.

An Extension of the Hand

At KMedic we see instruments as an extension of a surgeon’shand. It is with this relationship in mind that we selectthe instruments offered in this Sourcebook. We demandfrom our instrument makers: precision and reliability, consistency of pattern and uniform surface, all at a goodvalue. To ensure this level of quality, every one of our suppliers must meet our Quality Assurance Program. Onlywhen they have met these strict standards do we qualifyan instrument as KMedic Certified.

The idea that the instrument is an extension of the hand is more than a romantic notion at KMedic. It is directlyrelated to superior performance. When you work with aKMedic instrument, you’ll find it satisfies on many levels.First, like any well-crafted tool, it feels very good in your hand. What’s more, it functions extremely well. Taken together these two feelings translate into greaterconfidence and ease.

Evolving Tradition

As we’re all aware, new surgical techniques create a con-tinual need for improvements, as well as for the introduc-tion of entirely new instruments. KMedic responds tothese needs by forming partnerships with leading surgeonsas well as with The Podiatry Institute. Some examples ofour collaboration with The Podiatry Institute include, theP.I. Cox Metatarsal Spreader and the Gratloch Wire Bender™.

In the belief that closer communication will lead to furtheradvancements, we invite you to call, or to e-mail us, andshare your ideas for new and/or improved instrumentation. We look forward to hearing from you.

Our carbide needle holders have TC inserts firmly bonded to the inside of both jaws. We guarantee them for three years. The surface profiles of the inserts have been precision milled to provide the surgeon with a firm, non-slip grip on the needle. Because the carbide is harder than the steel of the needles, carbideneedle holders last much longer than ordinary ones. The ring handles are gold plated for easy identification.

About KMedicWire and Pin CuttersIn the past, surgeons have often had to rely on hardwarestore quality cutters made with inferior metals that cancontaminate and ruin stainless steel instrumentation. Now KMedic can meet all of your wire and pin cutting require-ments with our complete line of stainless steel cuttinginstruments.

Made from stainless steel – All of our wire cutters areengineered to meet the demanding needs of cutting rods, pins, cables and wires in the Operating Room. Jaws aremade from the toughest specially-tempered tool steel orhave tungsten carbide inserts.

More cutting power – Cutters designed with doubleaction give you more cutting power and help absorb theshock of wire cutting. For the surgeon there is better controland less fatigue.

Most extensive selection – We offer more jaw andhandle styles than any other instrument company.

Note on carbide instruments – Instruments withcarbide inserts can be replaced, however, welded carbidejaws can not be replaced.

To achieve the best results when cuttingwires and pins, follow these simple steps:

Choose the appropriate cutter for the wire diameter youwant to cut.

Do not exceed the maximum capacity marked on eachcutter.

Cut wire in the middle of the jaw–not on the tip or in thecorner.

Keep the jaw at right angles to the piece being cut.Do not twist or turn cutter.

Caution: Be sure to protect patient and O.R. personnel fromflying particles (especially the eyes). The harder the metal, the farther the pieces can fly.

Important note on maximum capacitiesAll maximum capacities noted in this Sourcebook are basedon tests using standard strength KMedic implant material.Cutting material which exceeds our recommended maximumcapacities may damage or shorten the life of cutting edgesand voids the instrument warranty. Please check the size ofthe material and the maximum capacity of the instrumentbefore using. If you’re not sure whether our cutter canhandle your material, give us a call (800) 955-0559.

P.I. FLUSH WIRE CUTTERKM 46-6317 front and side cuttingwith carbide insertscuts up to .062 (1.6mm) Tested and approved by

The Podiatry Institute®

Our P.I. Flush Cutter cuts K-Wire flush to thebone like no other wire cutter. Double action forease, comfort and power with tungsten carbidejaws for long life and sharpness.

Note: To achieve the best results when cuttingwire, follow these simple steps.

Choose the appropriate cutter for the wirediameter you want to cut.

Cut wire in the middle of the jaw not on theedge or in the corner.

Make a first cut leaving a piece about 1⁄4long. Now you can position the cutter for itssecond and flattest cut.

When cutting, do not twist and turn thecutter. Just press the handles together.

On the surface it’s difficultto tell one instrument fromanother. But in fact, manyqualities distinguish KMedicCertified Instruments from those of other manu-facturers. Our instrumentsare the product of a working knowledge of thesurgeon’s art, exactingmanufacturing specifica-tions and strict adherence to our QualityAssurance Program. Fromits origins as an idea, to the crafting of the proto-type, to its appearance on a surgical tray, it takesapproximately 80 steps tocreate a KMedic CertifiedInstrument. Every finishedinstrument is the result of years of performance mon-itoring and continualimprovements. Which iswhy we guarantee everyKMedic Certified Instru-ment for life.

At every stage of the man-ufacturing process superiorquality is built into ourinstruments. Neverthelessbefore our instruments findthemselves in a surgeon’s

hand, they are subject to an inspection processthat includes:

Visual inspection against a master sample to assurepattern consistency

Exacting caliper andmicrometer measurementsof critical dimensions

Function tests to ensureadherence to performancestandards

Surface audits to detectimperfections and irregularities

Corrosion and hardnesstests to guarantee functionality and longevity

Cutting tests to assure jawswill meet the specialdemands of bone cutting

 Maintenance of product history

The Ruskin Rongeur, shown here, is typical of KMedic craftsmanship. From its perfect symmetry to itsglare-diminishing finish, it providessurgeons with the qualities theyrequire to perform at their best. A closer inspection reveals:

What to look for in a KMedic Certified Instrument.
