Robert Morris will have a bye week after taking on Morgan State Saturday and will close out its three-game road swing with a Noon kickoff @ Monmouth (10/1) in its 2011 Northeast Conference opener. Quick Stat of the Afternoon - It’s been stated often that defense wins championships, and for Robert Morris, its defense already seems to be in peak form through two games. Through the first two games of the season the Colonials are yielding an average of 294 yards per game, including a rush defense of 71.5 yards per contest that ranks second in the NEC. Opponents own six scoring drives so far this season that have resulted in touchdowns, but amazingly only two have been longer than 50 yards. Robert Morris already have had 10 different players earn their first collegiate start on defense through two games of the 2011 campaign, including juniors Mike Cook and Cameron Chadwick last week in a 38-7 setback @ Liberty (9/10). Cook started at inside linebacker for senior Jon Krepps, while Chadwick started in place of junior Ben Ridgeley at weak safety. Saturday’s Opponent - Saturday’s game between Robert Morris and Morgan State marks the inaugural meeting between the two programs. The contest is the start of a home-and-home series between the Colonials and Bears, as Morgan State will visit Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pa., during the 2013 season. Robert Morris owns a record of 17-10-1 (.625) when fac- ing off with an opponent for the first time, and the last time the Colonials had an inaugural matchup with a new opponent was Nov. 27, 2010, a 43-17 setback @ North Dakota State in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs. On This Date (Sept. 17) in Robert Morris Football History - After 11 years of playing its football games less than a mile up the street at Moon Stadium, Robert Morris University opened Joe Walton Stadium, the first on-campus football field named in honor of the only head coach the program has ever known, with a 49-13 victory over Butler Sept. 17, 2005, in front of a standing- room-only crowd of 3,516. The 49 points scored by Robert Morris are the most ever scored by the program in a home opener. Robert Morris cruised in the contest, scoring five touchdowns in the first half in building a 35-0 halftime lead. Four different Colonials scored touchdowns on the afternoon, including a five-yard touchdown catch by former tight end Jeremy Wise (2002-05). That reception was the only catch of his four-year career. Head Coach Joe Walton18th Season - Pittsburgh ’57

At the forefront of the football renaissance at RobertMorris University throughout its 18-year history is JoeWalton, who has built the Colonials from a fledglingprogram into one of the top Football ChampionshipSubdivision (FCS) teams in the region.

The one constant associated with the program,Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. Hestarted the program from scratch, completing every-thing from hiring assistant coaches to purchasingequipment to recruiting student-athletes for theteam’s inaugural season in 1994.

Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football pro-gram, and to prove that, RMU has played its homegames since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name.

During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first NortheastConference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCSPlayoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship.

“It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said thismany times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the bestthings that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but Iwasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the per-fect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what Ilike to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Under Walton’s tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-sea-son titles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998,2010). Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and1997, and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-majornational crowns according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette.

In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eight-game winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC’s firstbid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victoryin the collegiate ranks.

Robert Morris Quick FactsLiberty Game Notes - Robert Morris slipped to 0-2 to start the season for just the fifthtime in the 18-year history of the program ... The Colonials also dipped to 2-2 (.500)overall against ranked opponents, including 0-2 on the road ... The attendance of15,805 at Williams Stadium is the largest crowd in school history for an RMU footballgame ... A total of 43 of Liberty’s 122 yards rushing (35.2 percent) on the evening cameduring its final scoring drive of the contest ... Robert Morris finished with 117 yardsrushing and 234 yards overall ... The Flames posted 355 yards of total offense thanks to233 through the air ... Kevin Fogg finished the night for Liberty with five tackles, a passbreakup, a pair of interceptions and an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Those Issues Are Secondary - Through the first two games of the 2011 season, a total offive Colonials have earned a start in the secondary, a group that includes a senior (AlexTarr), a junior (Ben Ridgeley), a pair of junior college transfers (Antwan Smith andCameron Chadwick) and a sophomore (D.J. Myers). Myers led the Colonials in tacklesagainst Dayton (9/3) in the 2011 season opener with a career-high nine takedowns, while Tarr paced RMU in stops with a career-high eight tackles @ Liberty (9/10). RobertMorris enters Saturday’s non-conference finale @ Morgan State with 44 of its 112 tack-les (39.3 percent) so far this season having come from its secondary.

Snapping a Streak - Junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair, who tied an RMU single-seasonschool record with 22 touchdown passes last season, completed his first touchdownpass of the 2011 campaign with a nine-yard strike to sophomore tight end VinceMongelluzzo in the fourth quarter @ Liberty (9/10). For Sinclair, it snapped a streak of80 passing attempts without a touchdown dating back to the 2010 campaign, thelongest drought of his career.

An Important Position - While junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair snapped one streak @Liberty (9/10), the recipient on the other end of his touchdown pass was sophomoretight end Vince Mongelluzzo, who recorded his first career reception. One of the mostimportant positions in head coach Joe Walton’s offense, Mongelluzzo is the 18th dif-ferent tight end in the 18-year history of the program to post a touchdown catch. Infact, Mongelluzzo is currently one of four tight ends in school history whose only catchis a touchdown, joining junior Tyler Digby and former Colonials Jeremy Wise (2002-05)and Sean McElhinny (2007-10).

The Tale of Turnovers - Dating back to the 2010 campaign, Robert Morris will look tosnap a four-game losing streak Saturday @ Morgan State, and limiting turnovers couldgo a long way in determining a winning outcome. In RMU’s final five games of the 2009season as well as the program’s first nine games of the last season, a stretch in whichthe Colonials finished 13-1 (.929) and claimed a share of the 2010 Northeast Conferenceregular-season championship, Robert Morris posted a turnover margin of +21, an aver-age of 1.50 per game. Former widereceiver Opio Gary (1998-2000) closed out his Robert Morris career by post-ing at least one reception in each of his final 22 games.

Many Happy Returns - Senior Anthony Coleman has been a rock for RobertMorris on special teams throughout his career, as the wide receiver entersSaturday’s game @ Morgan State owning Robert Morris career records forkickoff returns (78) and kickoff return yards (1,633). Thanks to his consis-tency on special teams, Coleman owns 2,521 career all-purpose yards, whichranks eighth all-time at Robert Morris. He finished with 165 all-purposeyards @ Liberty (9/10), the second highest single-game total of his career, and has a chance to become just the sixth player in school history to eclipse3,000 career all-purpose yards in his final season of eligibility.

On the flipside, so far on the 2011campaign a total of 14 Colonials have earned their first collegiate start.

Home Sweet Home - Slowly but surely, Robert Morris has learned to protectits home turf at Joe Walton Stadium. Thanks to a 42-24 win over CentralConnecticut State (11/6/10) that clinched a share of the 2010 NortheastConference championship, RMU stretched its winning streak at “The Joe” toeight games, the longest winning streak at the facility since opening the sta-dium in 2005. Foot Joy - One of the most important aspects that junior Jeff Sinclair bringsto the quarterback position at Robert Morris is his versatility. Saturday Night Lights - Robert Morris traveled to Lynchburg, Va., and dropped a 38-7decision @ Liberty (9/10) in the second week of the season in a game that kicked off at7:00 p.m. It marks just the sixth time in the 18-year history of the program theColonials played a game with a kickoff after 5:00 p.m. RMU owns a record of 1-5 (.167)all-time in night games, with all six of the previous contests coming on the road. Thetilt against Liberty is one of two games on the 2011 Robert Morris schedule that is anight game, as the Colonials will host their first night game in school history when theytake on Saint Francis at Joe Walton Stadium in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Oct. 8, aspart of the University’s Homecoming festivities. A look at each of RMU’s night games:

The Comeback Kids - As long as quarterback Jeff Sinclair and tight end Shadrae Kingare on the Robert Morris roster, anything is possible. Last season, Robert Morristrailed three times @ Sacred Heart (9/11/10) in its 2010 Northeast Conference openerbefore pulling out a victory when Sinclair connected with King for an eight-yard touch-down pass with 17 seconds to play. Included in RMU’s comeback against the Pioneerswere a pair of double-digit deficits. The Colonials trailed, 14-0, in the second quarterbefore rallying to tie the game at halftime, 14-14. In the third quarter the Pioneerspushed their advantage back to double digits, 24-14, but a pair of touchdowns early inthe fourth quarter gave Robert Morris its first lead of the 2010 season, 28-24. RMU’swin over Sacred Heart marked the fifth time in the 18-year history of the program theColonials have climbed out of a two-touchdown deficit for a victory, the largest inschool history. Surprisingly, four of those five instances have come on the road. A lookat each of the five games:

Opponent (Date) Deficit Quarter Result@ Mercyhurst (11/12/94) 0-14 1st W, 37-27Wagner (10/14/95) 0-14 4th W, 18-16@ Wagner (10/28/00) 17-31 4th W, 38-31 (OT)@ Monmouth (9/8/07) 0-14 1st W, 20-17@ Sacred Heart (9/11/10) 0-14 2nd W, 35-31

Cool, Calm, Collected - If anything, quarterback Jeff Sinclair has proven that he has icein his veins when Robert Morris is looking for big plays late in games. In addition toengineering a game-winning scoring drive in a 35-31 victory @ Sacred Heart (9/11/10)last season, the signal caller did it again a week later in the fourth quarter of a 30-23upset win over No. 14/15 Liberty (9/18/10) at Joe Walton Stadium. Sinclair marched theColonials 80 yards on six plays, which was capped by a 12-yard touchdown run by for-mer running back Myles Russ (2007-10) with just 22 seconds to play. Sinclair finished4-for-4 passing for 68 yards in the game-winning drive and is just the second RMUquarterback in school history to engineer back-to-back game-winning drives in thefourth quarter. He joins all-time leading passer Tim Levcik (1998-01). Levcik turnedthe trick in victories @ Wagner (10/28/00) and @ Sacred Heart (11/4/00) during RMU’sundefeated season in 2000.

King Me - Tight end Shadrae King has developed into quarterback Jeff Sinclair’sfavorite target, and that was certainly the case in RMU’s 35-31 victory @ Sacred Heart(9/11/10). King finished with eight catches for career high totals in both receivingyards (133) and touchdowns catches (3) against the Pioneers, including the game-win-ning touchdown with just 17 seconds to play. King is the fifth player in school history, and first tight end, to catch three touchdown passes in a game and the first since all-time leading receiver Tyjuan Massey (2002-05) established a single-game schoolrecord with four touchdown catches against Stony Brook (10/29/05).
