Game 2ConcordL, 10-27

Page 7: Football Game Notes (Week 3 vs. West Liberty)

It’s a common football adage that the most im-provement a team makes is between weeks one and two.

For Fairmont State University’s defense that pret-ty much rang true on the road Saturday afternoon against No. 22 Concord University.

In a week one 59-34 loss to West Virginia State, Fairmont’s defense was beleaguered and bat-tered. The Falcons allowed 509 total yards, includ-ing 279 on the ground and 230 through the air and permitted seven touchdowns and a pair of field goals to a team which had scored over 20 points

This past Saturday against Concord, a team which returned eight o!ensive starters from its 2014 team which made it to the NCAA Division II Play-o! Semifinals and ranked first in the Mountain East Conference a year ago in scoring (42.4 points), second in rushing yards per game (201.4) and third in passing yards per game (275.5), the Falcons’ de-fense performed admirably to say the least.

The nationally-ranked Mountain Lions recorded a 27-10 victory, but Fairmont’s defense kept it re-spectable by holding Concord to a season-low 308 total yards of o!ense, including 139 on the ground and 169 through the air.

Concord senior All-American running back Calv-inaugh Jones, who had rushed for 209 yards and two touchdowns against Fairmont as a sopho-more and 144 yards and three scores against the

20 carries. He did, however, score a pair of TDs on short runs. The 62 yards were the lowest rushing total for the talented Jones since the third game of his sophomore season in 2013 when Bowie State held him to 23 yards in a 16-10 victory by the Bulldogs.

“We hate losing, but in my opinion we took some -

nior defensive tackle Andre Young, who finished

penetration into Concord’s backfield and disrupt-ing the Mountain Lions’ o!ensive rhythm. “We still need to be more disciplined and we’ve got to continue to work on the little things to make our-selves better.

“Personally I think I let the team down a little be-cause I should’ve made more plays than I did, but as a unit we’re taking steps in the right direction.

have a goal to improve every day.”

Sophomore inside linebacker Marcus Porter only played in the second half, but led FSU against Con-cord in tackles with eight, including three for loss-

safety Emanuel Ivey, seven tackles from sopho-more defensive end Quincy Redmon and six stops

Two young players who played well Saturday

were redshirt freshman outside linebacker Jerry Iweh and true freshman safety Stephen Turner.

“We were pretty disappointed with the way we played in our opener and the coaches pushed us hard this week to respond with a better e!ort and I think we did,” said Turner, who finished with five tackles and returned a blocked punt six yards to help set up the Falcons’ lone touchdown of the game. “We lost and we don’t like that, but I think we all feel like we made strides in the right direc-

keep it going.”

Iweh, who also finished with five tackles, agrees.

“We knew Concord had a very strong running game and all week we really focused on trying to

-ing to the ball and tackling,” said Iweh. “We faced a lot of adversity in our opener and were pretty upset with our performance. We wanted to deal with that adversity this week and get better and I think we took steps in that direction.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys playing and we have a new defensive scheme this year and I think you saw signs today of it coming together. As a unit we spend a lot of time together and we take pride in what we do. We have made a lot of mis-takes in our first two games, but I think we can correct those and I think we have the potential to get better every game.”

One area first-year Fairmont State defensive co-ordinator Zach Crissup would like to see his unit improve upon is in the red zone. Opponents have made 10 trips into the red zone against Fairmont in the first two weeks of the season and have scored on all 10 trips. Opponents have nine touchdowns and one field goal on those red zone possessions.

FSU’s defense will face another di"cult test Thursday night when West Liberty (1-1) pays a visit to Duvall-Rosier Field for a 7 p.m. MEC contest. The Hilltoppers upended Concord, 29-28, in week one, but lost 50-27 Saturday to McKendree (Ill.) Univer-sity. West Liberty’s o!ense is averaging 28 points and 457.5 yards of total o!ense after its first two games, including 159.0 on the ground and 298.5 through the air. ===

Fairmont State this fall. The good news is FSU’s o!ense has yet to su!er a turnover after the first two weeks. The bad news is the Falcons’ defense has yet to create a turnover.

Prior to this season the last time Fairmont’s of-fense didn’t su!er a turnover was Sept. 13, 2014 in a 56-0 loss to Shepherd University. The last time Fairmont’s defense didn’t create a turnover prior to this season was Oct. 31, 2013 in a 40-37 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan. ===

in the Mountain East Conference in receptions per game (7.0) and sixth in the league in receiving yards per game (93.0). After two games Guerra has 14 catches for 186 yards and two touchdowns.

Guerra needs eight more receptions and 308 more receiving yards to move into the top 10 in FSU his-tory in both categories.

The Falcons hope to have some other receivers step up in the coming weeks to aid in the pass-ing game. To date, Guerra has over twice as many receptions as anyone else on the team. LaChristo-pher Lee has six catches for 41 yards and Devon Garnett has five receptions for 39 yards.

“Teams are going to man me and double cover me at times so there’s going to be opportunities for others to make plays on this team and I know they

to limit our mistakes and improve individually and as a unit every week.” === Fairmont State true freshman punter Tyler John-son is currently fifth in the Mountain East Confer-ence in punting. Johnson has punted eight times for an average of 39.4 yards per punt. His long punt this season was a 47-yarder against West Virginia State and he’s had two punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.
