Chardarino is a blend of our Estategrown Chardonnay and Albarino. The results give some of the bestcharacteristics of both grapes - a

little French, a little Spanish, and ahundred-percent California rebel.PaZa is happy to be one of the rstto grow Albarino in Placer County, and it shows-through with aromasof fresh pear, and a tad bit of miner-allity on the palate.      Janine Dexter, director of Colla Voce, seeks to do exactly what the arts non-prot organization is named for.

“Colla Voce means ‘follow the voice,’” Dexter said. “You see it in orchestral score where soloists or a group ofsoloists take control, and the conductor is no longer in charge.”

Dexter, who recently earned a masters degree in Choral Conducting from California State University LosAngeles, wrote her thesis on alternative concert experiences and presentations.

“Most people think choral music is just people dressed in black singing, and I’m trying to change that,” Dextersaid.

Dexter’s performances in the past differ from usual choir concerts. People in the audience enjoying the showare sometimes put to work, allowing them to stretch their amateur pipes to make for a more interactive show.

One year, the theme was “Songs of Peace,” and during one reective number the audience whispered a MayaAngelou poem along with the song. Another year, the theme “Songs of Winter” had the audience playingout sounds of a crisp seasonal wind. Dexter’s approach is ahead of the curve, because according to her, we’recurrently entering a golden age of audience participation in all media, including vocal performances.

“Art forms used to be static, and they were presented to an audience that was just receiving,” Dexter said. “Thetenants of that are dying.” Still, the new approach requires Dexter be quick on her feet.

“It’s tricky for me, because there’s no model to follow,” Dexter said. “But I’m always looking for new ways topresent the old masters, classical music in a way that’s more engaging than in the past.”

This year’s theme, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” will invite the audience to provide pictures of family memoriesof Christmas past to be displayed in a slideshow during the choir’s performance at the State Theater.

“The motivation for me was, ‘hey, we have this big screen in the theater, let’s use it,’” Dexter said. The venuewill provide excellent acoustics, and bring authenticity to the kind of show Colla Voce wants to put on foreager fans.

Members of Colla Voce’s chamber choir pinteractive shows under the direction of JDexter. “She’s extremely artistic and has so vision,” Bridget Yarborough, singer with Collasaid. “She’s always looking forward. I wish I coupart of the audience some nights.” Photos/Cou

“The people at the theater have done a bea job,” Dexter said. “They’ve bent over backwto help us do what we do the best way poss

The show will be stuffed to the brim with hostandards like “Chestnuts Roasting on an OFire,” “Silent Night,” and “Ave Maria.”

Bridget Yarbrough, who’s been singing Colla Voce for three years, loves how diverschoir is.

“The singers come from all walks of life,we come together to make great muYarborough said. “I love Colla Voce and thexperiences it ’s created.”

Once again, Yarborough is inspired by Dexdirection for this year’s holiday concerts.

“She’s extremely artistic and has so mvision,” Yarborough said. “She’s always looforward. I wish I could be part of the audisome nights.”

Colla Voce isn’t simply a choir group. Their sas a non-prot has provided art programs tcommunity such as their Bravo! Music Docurriculum, which has been implementenine schools including Skyridge and OElementary. The program, which has different years in it’s curriculum covers sublike the instruments of the orchestra, toworks of famous composers.

“Our goal is to educate, draw as many peinto the creative process as possible,” Dsaid. “We’re not in the entertainment busiwe’re in the transformation business.”

Each year Kona hold a Cultural Festival to celebrate their history, heritageand, of course, Kona Coffee. This annual festival is the foundation for theyearly Kona Coffee Cupping Competition which samples the region’snest offerings from top coffee farms. For two days these elite beans areroasted, ground and brewed only to be “slurped” up in the unique tastingmethod known as “cupping”.

Kona’s coffee history is a rich and involved one that started over 100 yearsago with the rst generation of immigrants (mostly Japanese) startingon ve acre parcels to work out a sustainable existence as coffee farmers.

What they found was that the unique conditions in Kona, with freshvolcanic soil and perfect greenhouse type weather, created a very avorfulcrop. With extreme diligence and a hard working ethic they were able toestablish a reputation that stood for quality and great taste.

The next generation focused onways to make coffee farming easierand more protable. In the searchfor more efcient methods and aconsistent relationship with worldcoffee buyers, Kona farmers devel-oped techniques and standards thatset them apart from the rest of theworld and turned Kona Coffee into alegendary name.

The future generations found difcul-ties with many facets of coffee farm-ing, from nding good labor to shadybusiness practices, that threatened totarnish the name. But with strugglescome opportunities to excel and makenew improvements. Like their forefa-thers, the farmers banded togetherand worked through the tough times;creating even stricter standards andhigher levels of quality. Once again,

Kona Coffee found itself the leader among all coffee varieties.

Today’s current generation of Kona farmers are watching as the worldsmaller and smaller. New challenges rise to the surface with plant-killpests like the root devouring Nematode or the Coffee Cherry Bore Beewhich can decimate entire crops. Older generations are selling familyfarms and newer farmers are coming in with new ideas, good and badalike. The whole industry is in a state of change but the one constant tremains: the high quality of Kona Coffee.

We know this rst hand because we have been buying Kona Coffeedirectly from Kona Farmers for over 20 years and this last year we becKona Farmers ourselves. Based in Lincoln California, our company, SaFrancisco Bay Gourmet Coffee, owns coffee farms and mills all over th

world including Panama, Mexico,Rwanda and now Kona. This yearwe harvested our rst full Kona crand have built a coffee mill on siteprocess our own coffee.

We also submitted our rst crop tannual cupping competition just see where we stacked up. The Crodivision that we entered contains biggest and best coffee farms on island and quite honestly we werevery surprised and pleased to plathird. As we gear up for another fuseason of quality production we wtake our bronze medal and put it the shelf next to the empty spots will hopefully contain our future place medals. That is the spirit of Coffee Farmers, always looking toprove, overcome and most imporly make the best coffee anywhere

ob Tutton, a member of the Auburn Kiwanis Club stands before a delivery truck, with awe inhis eyes.

“There’s got to be five palates of stuff in there,” Tutton said to fellow Kiwanis member GilHemmer.

“I know, I decided to order light this year,” Hemmer joked.

or the 18th year running, the Auburn Kiwanis Club is once again occupying a space to sell See’sCandy as part of their yearly fundraiser. After jumping from space to space, including downtown and

t the Elm and K Mart shopping centers, it seems the Kiwanis Club finally found a yearly holiday homewith the Raley’s shopping center just off the I-80. Considering their position as a holiday mainstay inhe area, people are already poking around the store, eager to see it open.

People will come in and ask, ‘Hey, it’s that time of year again, when are you opening?’” Hemmer said. It’s not like a Black Friday thing, but people wait for it.”

rom Nov. 14 all through the holidays, the Kiwanis Club raises about 90 percent of their yearlyperating budget selling toffee, peanut brittle and chocolate bars. Proceeds raised fund initiatives likecholarsh ips at local high schools like Chana, Placer and Foresthill, the Aktion Club for developmentallyisabled adults, and the Kiwanis Family House, which houses families of children receiving treatmentt UC Davis Medical Center.

From every item sold, Kiwanis receives15-40 percent of the cost. For Lori Heitz,Auburn Kiwanis Club President doingthe fundraiser year after year comesnaturally.

“It’s all about supporting the kids in ourcommunity,” Heitz said.

Since the Kiwanians got their WillyWonka on almost 20 years ago, their

candy store has expanded and grown. For more than a decade, they’ve alsoimplemented a “See’s For Soldiers”campaign. The campaign, spearheadedby Kathy Partak, was a way for civilianswho wanted to support the troops butdidn’t know how.

“Just because these conflicts aren’t aspublicized as they were in the past, thatdoesn’t mean these soldiers should beforgotten,” Partak said.

    The program welcomes people

patronizing the Kiwanis See’s Store to buyan extra box of candy to donate, which willthen be mailed to troops overseas for theholiday season. “See’s For Soldiers” caneven mail the donated candy to specicaddresses for those who have familyserving overseas.

“We call it a win, win, win,” Partak said.“The $15 they spend goes back to thecommunity, and the troops win becausethey get a taste of home. It beats CrystalLight packages and beef jerky.”

Gil Hemmer believes it’s one of thebest and most convenient ways forAuburnites to get a local candy fixfor the holidays without having tocommute to the big city.

“The community is very supportiveof it,” Hemmer said. “Saves peoplefrom dealing with the holiday rush, and it helps benefit everybody here inAuburn.”

The Auburn Kiwanis Club See’s Storewill be open Nov. 14 through Christmas

Eve. Most years, Kiwanis meets its goalof running out of stock by the timeChristmas rolls around, a
