YCSO arrests suspect in Black Canyon

City burglaryBLACK CANYON CITY –

Last August, someone broke into the Black Canyon Community Health Center in Black Canyon City and stole cash and a portable safe. Yavapai County Sheriff ’s Office detectives have been investigating the burglary and have now arrested a suspect.

According to a report from YCSO, over the last several weeks, a YCSO detective developed information identifying a suspect in this burglary case. When the detective began tracing forged checks that were stolen from the clinic to the Phoenix area, the leads identified additional

suspects, including 47-year-old Joseph Onello from Black Canyon City. It was discovered Onello had supplied Health Center checks that were kept in the safe stolen during the September burglary. The total amount of money involved in check forgeries already exceeded $11,000.

Detectives also located a witness who described seeing a suspicious man with a red off-road style motorcycle in the clinic parking lot around 5 a.m. on a day prior to the burglary.

Equestrians of all ages turned out to enjoy the day at the New River Kiwanis Community Park. Jeanne Powell was the lucky winner of the beautifully inscribed belt buckle. Austin Tongue had the best poker hand and was among winners of the many raffle prizes donated by local businesses. The ride lasted three hours, and a barbecue lunch was served at the park.

New restaurant The Bourbon Cellar offers ‘dining experience like no other’SCOTTSDALE – Craving a unique

dining experience? The Bourbon Cellar is the newest destination in upscale dining.

Located in north Scottsdale, The Bourbon Cellar offers a variety of meats, seafood, sides, and drinks, all within a relaxing, intimate atmosphere.

“It’s a dining experience like no other,” said owner/chef Doug Smith. “The main focus is the food and the ambience.”

The Bourbon Cellar menu is all about fresh food. Fresh seafood can be hard to come by in Arizona – so Smith has it flown in daily from Prince Edward Island.

“I have the freshest ingredients,” Smith said. “We don’t freeze anything. It’s fresh every single day.”

Smith notes that his seafood dishes have proven the most requested menu items so far. The steak dishes are also popular; every cut of meat is USDA prime cut. The steak menu includes filet mignon, New York strip, and bone-in cowboy ribeye. The menu is à la carte, so customers can choose among the side menu items.

In addition to the food, The Bourbon Cellar has a specialty drink menu.

“We do bourbon, so we carry about 200 labels of the finest bourbon America makes,” said Chef Smith. “We do a wide variety of handcrafted cocktails. We have a great mixologist here.” The Bourbon Cellar also has a reserve wine list with wines available that can’t be bought in stores.

Smith has owned other similar restaurants in the past; he has 20 years experience as a chef. His goal with The Bourbon Cellar is to offer something unique to diners.

“I’m pretty hands-on with the business – I’m always here,” Smith said.

As a local resident, Smith selected The

Bourbon Cellar’s location in the Summit Plaza in north Scottsdale in order to offer something new for local patrons.

“My wife and I, we live up here in Cave Creek; we’ve lived here 15 years,” Smith noted. “We know the area well. It’s a beautiful part of town.”

The Bourbon Cellar’s tagline is “For life’s little celebrations.” Smith wants the restaurant to be a go-to for date nights, outings with friends, and special occasions.

“What we’re trying to establish here is a local, fine dining experience,” Chef Smith emphasized. “Please come in and give us a try!”

NORTH VALLEY – With more than 300 employees having served in the U.S. armed forces, the Arizona Department of Transportation is an active participant in the federal Transition Assistance Program connecting those leaving military service with jobs.

The Transition Assistance Program, created by a 2011 law and administered by the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, helps service members develop comprehensive plans to pursue education, search for jobs, or start businesses after their military careers. Its training program, known as Transition GPS (Goals, Plans, Success), includes a mandatory five-day workshop and additional days of optional training depending on an individual’s chosen career path.

ADOT is a fixture at employment fairs organized by the Transition Assistance Program at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale. As part of that, ADOT created a step-by-step guide for military personnel interested in applying for

employment with state agencies.

Phoenix Chamber seeks award nominations

PHOENIX – The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its 2016 IMPACT Awards, which honor the accomplishments of outstanding Valley businesses and the positive impact they’ve made on the Greater Phoenix business community.

from Durango, Colo., where he served as director of food and beverage at the Sky Ute Resort & Casino from 2010-2015. Earlier, he held the position of general manager for the Westin Canal Place Hotel, New Orleans from 2008-2010. From 2002-2010, he served as the director of food and beverage for the River Palms Casino and Tropicana Casino in Laughlin, Nev., where he was responsible for multiple food and beverage operations and later served as general manager. Previously, he was responsible for multiple food and beverage venues with the Aztar Corporation, Golden Nugget, and MGM Grand Corporations from 1987-2002.

A seasoned veteran of the restaurant industry, Maskovich’s love for the food and beverage industry began when he was only 15 years old where he learned the culinary trades as a cook. Community input sought on police Chief recruitment

PHOENIX – The city of Phoenix is requesting input with a community survey regarding the upcoming recruitment for a new police chief. After serving the city for more than 30 years, Phoenix’s current police chief, Joseph Yahner, will retire in October of 2016. A community survey will be available through Nov. 30 to get residents’ input on what to look for in police chief candidates.

The community survey is an opportunity to use feedback from citizens that can be considered when creating the candidate profile for the new chief. Survey questions allow participants to rank their top priorities for the police department as well as what they believe are the

most important qualifications, experience, and leadership skills desired in a new chief.

The community survey will be available online at phoenix.g o v / p d c h i e f r e c r u i t m e n t until 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30. The survey is also available online in Spanish.

Online fee for watercraft registration renewals removed

NORTH VALLEY – The Arizona Game and Fish Department has removed a fee charged for watercraft owners to renew their boat or watercraft registrations online.

The $2.50 Internet transaction fee charged on all watercraft registrations renewed online was removed to encourage the state’s watercraft users to renew their vessels’ registrations on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Those renewing online at http://azgfdportal.az.gov/boating/registration can print out a temporary 30-day registration until their yearly registration is received via mail. Watercraft owners can also continue to renew through mail or in person at an Arizona Game and Fish Department office.

This year, there have been 127,796 watercraft registered in Arizona. The figure is a 2.7-percent increase from the 124,425 registered in the state in 2014.

In addition to having the proper registration, watercraft users should consider taking a safety course to ensure they are operating their vessel safely.

Chamber accepting float entries for holiday parade

CAREFREE – The Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce is now accepting parade entries for the 8th Annual Carefree Christmas Festival’s Holiday Parade of Lights that will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12, 100 Easy Street, in downtown Carefree.

All floats must be decorated in holiday lights and carry a fire extinguisher. Horse riders will be permitted if handlers are present to walk alongside. Those with animal groups must provide cleanup crews. The parade is sponsored by APS and produced by the Chamber of Commerce. Float prizes include a Mayor’s Award, Ambassador’s Award, President’s Award, and Director’s Award.

Entry fees are $50 for non-profits and $100 for commercial vendors. All entries must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Friday, November 20. For more information, contact the Carefree Cave Creek Chamber at (480) 488-2051.

‘America’s Got Talent’ to hold auditions in Phoenix

PHOENIX – ‘America’s Got Talent’ auditions will be held in Phoenix on Thursday, Dec. 3. The Season 11 open call auditions will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center.

Phoenix is the third stop on a 12-city nationwide search for America’s next big undiscovered entertainer. ‘America’s Got Talent’ will host Season 11 auditions in 12 cities, including Detroit, MI; New York, NY; Phoenix, AZ; Salt Lake City, UT; Las Vegas, NV; San Jose, CA; San Diego, CA; Kansas City, MO; Los Angeles, CA; Atlanta, GA; Orlando, FL; and Dallas, TX.

Day Parade? It is the one Great Day to honor our men and women who served, watch the bands, the flags, the thrilling display of pride as we are reminded just how much we

owe those who wear and wore the uniform.

My father served in World War II, my husband was a corpsman in Vietnam, my grandson is in the Navy stationed at Coronado. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, my father, like tens of thousands of young men, joined the Army Air Forces immediately. Stationed in England with the 450th Bomb Squadron of the 322nd Group, he recalls flying over France on a mission when the propeller fell off the plane. Land the plane in a farmer’s field, find some baling wire and have a French farmer and three airmen get the

propeller back on the fuselage and fasten it on with a wire used for hay. Take off and make it back to base. To fly again, fight again and try to save humanity from the clutches of evil.

We are a country divided by politics. Yet, our military men and women stay above the fray. They do not question orders, debate the worthiness of a conflict, rail or protest against a President or their leaders. They follow the full faith and force of the military code – to go, walk, run, drive, fly, sail, and march into the darkness of battle. No sissies allowed. We have learned as a country that we may hate a war (Vietnam) but we better make sure we honor the soldiers who went there.

Listening to Beatles music and dreaming of a new mustang, graduating from high school and swept off to the jungles of the Viet Cong into a world (and war) that was pretty much incomprehensible. We could not win it. We could not imagine the terror and suffering that our young boys felt. We never thought it would be like this. But they served, went, sacrificed and died because our country went to war.

I had a girlfriend in Ohio named Maria who was young and pregnant when the black sedan pulled into her driveway and two Army officers in full dress uniforms got out and walked up to her door. She locked the door. Screamed, “Do not come in,” ran to her bedroom. She called her mother. Wept, threw a lamp and one hour later the two men

were still standing at her door. She let them in to a barrage of swear words that she didn’t even realize she knew. She cussed at the President, the officers and the world that made her a widow at the age of nineteen.

Some gave all. So this past Veterans Day Parade while we might have enjoyed the parade, there is a woman in Virginia who goes to Arlington with a blanket, a thermos of coffee, a bouquet of flowers and a tarnished wedding photo. To lie on the grave of her husband. To take in the loss that is hers. To realize that a war occurred in a place called Iraq, a place she will never go to, never wants to think of, and that her husband on the last week of his third mission was killed. Gone in an instant. But never forgotten. Because life can end but memories don’t.

So the woman can lie on the blanket placed in front of her husband’s gravestone and look out at the thousands of white markers that shout out, “we were alive once.” My friend, Maria, found comfort in touching the name of her husband, Ted, on the Vietnam Wall. She left the photo of their daughter that he never knew at the base of the Wall. A thousand parents touch the neatly folded flag that was given to them, when what they really wanted was their son or daughter to come walking through the door.

So here we are. In the midst of another “conflict” with our service members doing their jobs (at great risk) for this nation. We may have strong feelings about the current wars. Some

will say that Iraq was a waste of time. Well, that’s politics I suppose. But we lost our sons and daughters in that “conflict,” and best not to call anything that costs a life a “waste.” Our promise to our Veterans is that “we will take care of you.” Our government will not forsake you and never forget that you proudly, bravely and without hesitation served our country.

Historians will analyze the effectiveness of wars we fought in and our elected officials will decide on the new wars we will have to fight. But the “we” is really a group of devoted, loyal, highly trained, brave men and women who have chosen to join the military. Their commitment never ends, their work often underestimated, their experiences are often unimaginable.

So if you are an employer, hire a Vet! They are no slackers, they show up, think on their feet, follow through, strive for excellence, know how to work through challenge. If you have extra time, volunteer at the Veterans Hospital. See what the lingering consequences of combat are in the servicemen who need our help. Veterans Day is so much more than a parade. But it exemplifies how thankful we are and how much we owe our men and women who fought, fight and serve.

Obituary: Clifton Childs

Clifton Childs, 67, of Black Canyon City, went to be with the Lord on October 21, 2015, at home in Black Canyon City with his wife and daughters by his side. He was a long time resident of Black Canyon City.

Clifton was born November 4, 1947, the son of Pete and Imogene Childs in Phoenix, Arizona.

He is survived by his wife,

Dorothy, son Clifton Childs, Jr., daughters Donna Palmer and Sharon Hyde, brothers Terry Childs, James Childs, Tony Childs, and Michael Grantham and one sister, Donna Hudson. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and countless friends.

Clifton was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Dee Grantham, son Michael Childs and grandson Timothy Childs.

Clift was the music director, Sunday School Teacher and head of the Men’s Fellowship at New River First Assembly of God. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ through song and word. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He will be missed by all those who knew him.

The description provided not only matched Onello’s physical description, but detectives confirmed Onello owned a red ‘dirt bike.’ Additional details were obtained, leading to probable cause that Onello committed the burglary. On Nov. 7, the handling detective located Onello in the Camp Verde Detention Center where he was incarcerated on an unrelated warrant. Onello denied burglarizing the clinic. Detectives charged him with one count of Burglary, 2 counts of Theft, and a count of Criminal Damage. He remains in-custody on a total bond of $4,100.

YCSO notes that the investigation has identified several additional suspects involved in the forgery of stolen clinic checks in the Phoenix area. Law enforcement agencies in those affected locations are investigating, and additional arrests are likely.

Many diamond cutting factories have special divisions for excellent cuts. OF THE PEACEAs I was listening to this year’s

Veterans’ Day event in Anthem, I could not help but scan the crowd and be impressed by the genuine commitment to service by those in attendance. Some people hope to be able to commit themselves to a cause greater than themselves. Most of those assembled actually had. There is good reason to be impressed and to be thankful.

Thanksgiving is certainly a time to give thanks. If you are living in the United States, then you immediately have many things to be thankful for. Among these is the United States itself.

The phrase “American Exceptionalism” has been misused as of late. People who believe in American Exceptionalism don’t necessarily believe that U.S. citizens are somehow better than the rest of the people in the world. The truth is we are not.

Instead, American Exceptionalism means that our country was founded on an exceptional set of ideas, that were documented in our Constitution. There are many good and even some great countries around the world; but they are not based on an idea.

Daniel Webster, who served as a U.S. Senator before the Civil War, once wrote, “Hold on,

my friends, to the Constitution and to the Republic for which it stands. Miracles do not cluster and what has happened once in 6,000 years, may not happen again. Hold on to the Constitution, for if the American Constitution should fail, there will be anarchy throughout the world.”

On October 20, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation designating the last Thursday in November specifically as a day of thanks. He wrote that it would be, “a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow citizens, wherever they may be then, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the Universe.” He also recommended that Aericans “offer up penitent and fervent

prayers” to God “for a return of the inestimable blessings of peace, union and harmony throughout the land.”

Those words still apply today. Even so, our government, perhaps especially on the federal level, remains far from perfect. This is almost by design. But while there may be some issues with some people in certain positions, there is nothing wrong with our actual system. Our Constitutional form of government, when followed, works.

If you have an opportunity to sit and to reflect this Thanksgiving season, one of the things you should be thankful for is that, probably by accident of birth, that you are an American. Many blessings flow from that simple status.

Holiday Home Tour event to feature six local homes

ANTHEM – Get in the holiday spirit with the 10th Annual Holiday Home Tour event, presented through Anthem Cares Through Service (ACTS), happening Dec. 8 and 10. The proceeds from this fun holiday tour benefit Anthem families in need. The tour will run 6-9 p.m. both nights.

This year’s event features six beautifully decorated homes and lots of holiday spirit. Homeowners have put their unique collections and individual personalities into their decorating and are welcoming you into their homes to enjoy the creations. Tour-goers can get ideas for

their own homes, enjoy an evening out, and feel good about knowing proceeds from the event benefit those in need of help – the spirit of the

Foothills Community Foundation to host Arizona Sage Art Market

SCOTTSDALE – A new holiday shopping event will take place in north Scottsdale offering patrons a chance to purchase original pieces of art for $300 or less, with 20 percent of sales benefitting a local nonprofit.

The Foothills Community Foundation’s inaugural Arizona Sage Art Market takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the FCF Holland Community Center, 34250 N. 60th St. Bldg. B, in Scottsdale. The event features more than 35 juried, nationally-recognized artists who will display and sell vibrant wooden bowls, whimsical ceramics, paintings in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, dazzling jewelry, beautiful gourd art, photography, fiber art, batik, mixed media, and more.

“Rather than fight the crowds at the mall, come find a unique gift and enjoy our festive holiday ambiance,” said Chris Winger, FCF president and CEO. “In addition to a diverse selection of art, the event will feature live Native American flute music, and our onsite restaurant, My Sweet Blessings Bakery and Bistro, will be open serving delicious pastries, sandwiches, salads, and coffee.”

Juried fine artists and craftsmen from across the Southwest will also be exhibiting original works in a wide variety of medium and subject matter, including paintings, sculptures in bronze, stone, glass, metal, wood, mixed media, fine photography, jewelry, leather apparel, and exquisite handcrafted home décor, including holiday items.

“Photography, is more than a medium of factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art.” ~ Ansel Adams It’s this spirit that drives local, world-trekking photographer Joel Wolfson as he developed his dream by believing, “You make your own luck, it takes perseverance, tenacity and an open mind.”

Beginning life in Albuquerque, N.M., Joel entered a coloring contest when he was 8 years old. To his surprise and delight, he won the grand prize: his own camera. This was a game changer in the way young Joel would see and share his world. He found at age 8, he was barely tall enough to peer over the edge of the developer tray. At this point, Joel’s older sister, interested in photography herself, became his guide through the black and white land of ghostly images that magically appear on blank photo paper. By the age of 13, Joel was studying photography on his own. He built his own darkroom and as he tells it, “abandoned Spiderman in favor of photography heroes Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham and Ed Weston.“

Joel’s family moved to the Midwest during his mid childhood. There he completed

his college degree program in Intercultural and Business Communications, but Joel’s lifelong passion for capturing rare images in creative ways took him in a different direction, earning him a reputation for quality in the publishing world. It wasn’t long before Joel was adding to his elite client base with Fortune 500 companies and an opportunity to sign on with a picture agency in New York. Yet, the magnetic power of the spacious Southwest landscapes and the rheumatic whispers of the Pacific’s jeweled shores would tempt him back to the landscapes he admired as a boy. With his companions in creative spirit Ansel Adams and Edward Henry Weston, Joel set out to create a body of work he hoped would communicate the inspiring stories of his images to others.

Joel’s studio is anywhere his inspiration transports him, from the rugged coastline of the central California coast to the lush rolling landscapes of Tuscany. His gift for seeing final images in his mind’s eye affords Joel the unique opportunity to compose the best elements of the scene into the masterpiece that captivates its viewers. But Joel isn’t just

a lone photographer in search of the next spectacular image; he is also a passionate teacher of his art. He loves teaching photography as much as he loves creating with it. He offers one on one instruction, workshops, as well as small group overseas workshops and tours. His ability to reach out using the Internet offering webinars, writing blogs and posting articles increases his audience and his student participation proportionately. Local band Guerilla Party to release first album next year

ANTHEM – The Guerilla Party Band is on their way to the big time. This locally-based band recently returned from a trip to Nashville, where they began recording their first album. Local teens Jarod Jackson, Serge Droban, and D’Mitri Droban will be headed back to Nashville this spring to continue working on the album.

The Guerilla Party Band was founded in 2014. Band members describe Guerilla Party as a “chill band” that “Muse, System of a Down and Rage Against the Machine.” They’ve played at multiple venues throughout Arizona and are now expanding their focus. Their first album is expected to drop this summer.

Brothers Serge and D’Mitri have been making music together since they were kids. They started doing shows together at local venues, which is where they met Jarod, as well as their manager, David Henry. Jarod, D’Mitri, and Serge stayed in touch after their nitial meeting, and eventually the brothers asked Jarod to “come in and audition.” The rest is history!

With thousands of followers on Twitter and Facebook who can’t get enough of the Guerilla Party sound, the band felt the timing was right this year to get working on an album.

“We wanted to get the ball rolling and have something for our fans to listen to and be able to download,” band manager David, of DH Music Management, said. “It was a good first experience for them. So now we’re getting ready and looking forward to doing a lot of touring in 2016.”

David got involved with Guerilla Party after hearing the band play. He noted that his musical experience has helped him learn about the industry and that he wanted to help the band grow. He and his wife Heidi are also providing Web site and social media resources for the band.

Referring to helping bands grow, David said, “I’m always

willing to give advice or just help out.”

While in Nashville, the band members met their producer and, as Serge put it, “got to see behind the scenes.”

“Nashville went really well,” Serge added.

Since the band members are all teens, they’re working their tour schedule around school

time, switching to online school and keeping the tour schedule mainly to the summertime. The love of what they do and how well the band members mesh together keeps Guerilla Party going.

David describes the band as knowing “the theory of music.”

“They know what to do,” David said. “They know music.”

Pet of the Week: LeoHi, I’m Leo, an 8 month

old, tan & white, Deer Head Chihuahua. While I might be a little guy, I make up for it in personality and magnetism!

I love to be the center of attention, and my human friends will tell you I am a devoted and attentive pup that bonds well with everyone. I also adore kids and I get along great with cat and dog playmates. I am fully crate trained but still working on my potty training. My foster is a veterinarian, so it’s only a matter of time before I master that as well. I’m all about the fun and attention. Grab a leash and I’ll go the distance. Grab a blanket and I’ll snuggle up with you for hours. I’m such an easy going pup and I would thrive in a home with an active family. Obviously I’m a little peanut, so I need to be an indoor-only dog with a secure, fenced-in yard and human supervision when I’m outside. Those are really the only strict requirements I can think of.
