Mark Hollander has beeninvolved in the kitchen and bathindustry since childhood. His par-

ents were professional remodelersin Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. By theage of 14 the young Hollanderbecame proficient at drafting anddesigning kitchens and at age 16 hewas designing and selling completekitchen and bath packages for thefamily business. Today MarkHollander, along with wife Michelle,is the owner of Payless Kitchensand Hollander Homes located at1451-A East Main Street in GrassValley.

    They open their first Payless

Kitchen location in 1988 inFountain Valley, California andadded a second location inHuntington Beach shortly thereafter. Soon Marks passion fordesign started to expand beyondkitchens and baths and turned toentire homes. His reputation wasgrowing in both design and recon-struction which, in 1993 led toHollander becoming a licensedgeneral building contractor. In 1994he became a DuPont Corian certi-fied fabricator and established a

design patent for an ADA compliantgrab bar and hand rail system thatwas made of this material. Hisclient list continued to grow withthe likes of Amtrak, Boeing, DreisenAircraft, the US Marines, CampPendleton, and many chains likeKings Table Buffet, Country HarvestRestaurant, Juice Up stores addingtheir names to satisfied customers.By 2000, Hollander also startedbuilding custom high end homes inLaguna Beach. But after complet-ing nearly 3,000 renovations Mark

and Michelle decided it was time topursue a dream...their own customhome nestled in the woods. In 2005they became Foothills residentsafter purchasing land and buildingthe dream home on BannerMountain.

In time they opened a Payless

    Kitchens show-room off SouthAuburn Street.

Last year theyrelocated to amuch larger loca-tion on 1451 AEast Main Street. This move hasallowed them toshow and offermore kitchen andbath products andservices. Whilethe showroom isbigger, theHollander busi-

    8 Foothills Marketplace 888-7653 March 15,

In 2004 Brian OLooney decided it was time todo the same thing in a new way. The same thing

was carpet cleaning, a job he had done for the last14 years. The new way of doing it was to become isown boss with a business called Carpet Pro. TheOLooneys have been Nevada County residents for8 years after deciding that Penn Valley was the rightplace to settle down and raise kids, they have three. It also gave them the opportunity to join the worldof self employed. The resulting Carpet Pro is not afranchise, but a true family owned business.

It is recommended by many carpet manufactur-ers that frequently used carpets be steam cleanedonce a year. Homes with pets or homeowners withallergies should consider having their carpetscleaned more often. Carpet Pro features two fullyequipped vans to meet the areas carpet cleaningdemands. They believe in Green and use cleaningsolutions that are environmentally safe and friend-ly. Both Brian and his employee, Nevada Countynative Anthony Ruggiero, are IICRC Certified

Technicians (A non-profit organizations that seas the industry guardian for the cleaning, inspetion and restoration service industries for morethan 30 years).

Brian and Patty like the fact they have the freedomto take their business in any direction necessary tomeet the needs of their customers. While the busi-ness name is Carpet Pro, this non-franchise freedomhas allowed them to expand into other areas ofexpertise such as providing home owners with betterindoor air quality by cleaning the homes heating

and cooling air duct system with Rotobrush. Overthe years a home air duct system will naturally buildup dust and debris through normal usage, but manytimes this out of sight area is a forgotten. Putting offcleaning your homes ventilation system not only willcause continued dust problems but can also lead tohealth problems as well. Brian can show you somebefore and after photos of other home owners airduct systems. It is eye-opening. Other services offerby Carpet Pro are tile and grout cleaning in yourkitchen, bath, shower, floors and patios as well asupholstery cleaning, stain removal and carpet repair

lifestyle chance. So he and his family decided tolook for a better, small town living environmentwhere they could become part of a community.Grass Valley fit the requirements and it had a delifor sale.

Marchinek operated SUBsationalSUBsanwiches for 10 years at its original locationbefore moving to the present South Auburn Street

building in 1998. We try to have a family atmos-phere for our customers and our employeesMarchinek said. Ive been blessed with a greatgroup of young people who have helped me buildand maintain the business. We like to keep it funand loose, kind of what you would experiencewhen you sit down to eat around the family table.

Speaking of keeping it loose, one of the featuresof a SUBsational SUB is that the staff practices noportion controls when it come to adding ingredi-ents to their sandwich creations. Marchinekbelieves that a good sub sandwich should besomewhat messy do to ingredient overload. While

the bread is good, its the stuff in the middle thatmakes it special. The menu features 18 differentsandwiches, both hot and cold and all come infive, seven or 14 inch sizes. The sandwich varietyranges from a simple ham and cheese to a fivemeat and two cheese Super Sub. All subs comewith a choice of extras like lettuce, pickles, toma-toes, mild peppers and dressings. You also have achoice of breads or wrap. You can even find subselections that give you the option of chicken orwhitefish/crab. And of course, being from NewYork, Marchinek also feature a selection of hotdogs with different fixings. French Dips, PhillyCheese Steaks, salads, soups and chili are also

menu items. Three and five foot party trays arealso available.

I really love being part of the Grass Valley comunity. In a small town you can be involved areally make a difference everyday. SUBsationSUBsanwiches backs up their belief in commuinvolvement by helping to sponsor many charible events and youth activities. Marchinek add

Our goal is not sub sandwich supremacy in homany we sell, but the number of people who ha satisfied eating experience.

SUBsational SUBsandwiches is located at 15South Auburn Street, downtown Grass Valley. They are open Monday through Friday from10:30am to 7:00pm and Saturday and Sunday10:30am to 5:00pm. You can phone in orders a273-4782.

(ARA) - These days, whenit comes to produce, thecatch words are local andseasonal. Local and sea-

sonal, like fresh and organic, can mean a lot of differentthings, according to JimGallivan, department chair of Culinary Arts at TInternational Culinary School at The Art InstituAtlanta and author of several cookbooks, includ

The AdventureCookbook and ThNew Spa Cuisine.

Local. Local candefined as having begrown less than a dadrive from where its

purchased. In gener-al, local is preferable,Gallivan says, because it lastslonger, not havingspent days travellingacross the country orthe world to get toyou. Less travel also means less use of resourcesand less air pollution.

Seasonal. If youve ever picked your own str

berries, you know theres nothing like that freshpicked taste. Today, you can get almost any kindproduce at just about any time of the year.Asparagus in December? Its shipped in from Pewhere its in season. Apples in July? Theyre pullfrom cold storage just for you. Fresh. We tend to think we should alwayschoose fresh. And if its local and seasonal, fresh isusually better. But sometimes canned or frozen is abetter choice, especially when youre cooking thevegetables or fruit, as opposed to serving themuncooked. For instance, if youre making somethingwith tomatoes, canned - especially in the winterwhen tomatoes are not in season - are probablybest. Gallivan says to remember that canned and

frozen produce has typi-cally been picked andprocessed at its peak. That means its going totaste much better than

    out-of-seasonfreshproducethat has

beentravellingfor daysor in cold storage formonths.

Organic. Google the word organic and youllfind hundreds of websites, and as many variations ofmeaning. By definition, organic produce has beenraised without chemical fertilizers and pesticides, using sustainable agricultural practices. Natural isnot the same as organic. Neither is additive freeor no preservatives. Moreover, there are different

levels of United States Department of AgricultureOrganic Certification (www.ams.usda.gov). That

means when you shop for organic produce, youneed to be aware and read the fine print.

The bottom line for buying produce: Educateyourself. Know what is in season, what is grownlocally and where it can be purchased, and howdetermine if something really is organic. To learmore about The Art Institutes schools, visitwww.artinstitutes.edu/nz.

at age 18 in New York City, run-ning folksinger get-togethers at

the legendary Gerdes Folk City. After a year, Brown moved westto Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where he was a ghostwriter forBuck Ram, founder of thePlatters. Tired of the fast-pacedlife, Brown traveled with a bandfor a few years, and even quit

playing for a while before he moved back to Iowa andbegan writing songs and playing in mid-western clubs andcoffeehouses. Browns songwriting has been lauded bymany, and his songs have been performed by Willie Nelson,Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Shawn Colvin, and MaryChapin Carpenter. He has also recorded more than a dozen

albums, including his 1986 release, Songs of Innocenceand Of Experience, when he put aside his own songwrit-ing to set poems of William Blake to music. One Big Town, recorded in 1989, earned Brown three and a half stars inRolling Stone, chart-topping status in AAA and The GavinReports Americana rankings and Browns first Indie Awardfrom NAIRD (National Association of Independent RecordDistributors). The Poet Game, his 1994 CD, receivedanother Indie award from NAIRD. His critically acclaimed1996 release Further In was a finalist for the same award.Rolling Stones four-star review of Further In called Browna wickedly sharp observer of the human condition. 1997sSlant 6 Mind earned Brown his second Grammy nomina-tion. East versus West makes for a dramat-ic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormousfascination. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow,Anna Leonowens (played by Grace Fae),and her young son arrive at the RoyalPalace in Bangkok, having been sum-moned by the King (Jared Lee) to serve astutor to his many children and wives. Shocked is an immensely likable aone whose music combines biting wit, sharp social comentary and a strong sense of Texas roots. - ChicagoTimes. She is an independent singer-songwriter and aworking artist who thrives on the spoilsof a hard-won fight. This yearsCampfire Girl tour bears witness to theenduring legacy of her highly unusualdebut, The Texas Campfire Tapes, abootleg album that was famously

recorded on a Sony Walkman andreleased, unbeknownst to Shocked, byan enterprising Briton. Shocked wasmore surprised than anyone when thealbum made its debut on the UK inde-pendent charts in November 1986 - I never made arecord, she recalls, so why would I expect to be on aEnglish chart? This early experience, and a 1996 legatle to retain her catalog ownership against MercuryRecords, made Shocked a natural poster child for artirights. In 2003, The Texas Campfire Tapes finally fouway home to her Mighty Sound label. In 2011, with aof Boswell Sisters and Mills Brothers inspired vocalistwill debut five new compositions for Indelible Wome

Dallas, Texas, and grew up in the early 1960s listening toRoger Miller on a $2.00 transistor radio. In 1963, the yearJFK was shot, his parents headed west withtheir two young sons to Los Angeles in their59 El Dorado. By the time Halford turned18, he had moved 10 times between LA andSan Francisco weaned on the musical mael-strom of LA radio in the 60s and 70s.Surrounded by the albums of Ray Charles,Dave Brubeck, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell,Elvis, and Buffalo Springfield, Halfordsoaked up the best of American music. Inhigh school, Halford ditched classes and came only to takethe tests. According to school records, he had the worstattendance of any graduating student. He decided to addtrouble with the law to his resume. Then came a guitarfrom his dad, and things started to turn. After high school, while walking along San Franciscos Market Street, hewatched a street band playing Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry,Robert Johnson, and the Ventures. Halford convinced themthat he should join the band. For more than a year, he cuthis guitar chops on the street, playing to crowds inChinatown and Union Square until the police closed themdown. His street gig led him to play with Oakland bluesgreats Sonny Lane, Mississippi Johnny Waters, and JJ

Malone. He also formed his own roots rockabilly band,The Snappers. He performed with the Blasters, ChrisIsaak, and the Beat Farmers. Sill based in San Francisco hesbeen touring the country with his band, the Healers. Hisnewest and fifth CD, Railbirds, is the follow-up to the crit-ically acclaimed Hunkpapa. Harrison, Phil Lesh, Bonnie Raitt, ClausOgerman, Michael McDonald, Bob Dylan,John Mayall, Greg Allman and many oth-ers. Robbens first attempt at forming hisown jazz quartet was picked up by leg-endary blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon, which brought Robben to L.A. He touredthe U.S. and Europe with Witherspoonand was seen by Tom Scott and membersof The L.A. Express, who were about tobegin a promotional tour with JoniMitchell for her recording Court and

Spark. Robben was invited to play guitar on the tour andplayed on two recordings with Mitchell and The L.A.Express. The two years I spent with Joni were the mostformative of my musical life. Joni was just brilliant and veryaccessible, and the members of The L.A. Express becamegood friends and teachers. It was great. Beatle GeorgeHarrison invited Robben to join him on his Dark Horsetour of the U.S. and Canada, raising his musical profileeven further. In 1977, he was approached by Elektra

Records, which produced his first solo recording TheInside Story with a group of musicians who went on become The Yellow Jackets. The concert will also featJonathan McEuen as the opening act. release her music on her own terms, the self-describedLittle Folksinger has been the subject of all kinds of hyper-

bole. Shes been called fiercely inde-pendent (Rolling Stone), inspira-tional (All Music Guide), and theultimate do-it-yourself songwriter(The New York Times). DiFrancobegan her career at the age of nine,

when her guitar teacher helped her land her first gig, per-forming a set of Beatles covers, at an area coffeehouse.Befriended by the likes of Suzanne Vega and MichelleShocked, she later gave up music to study ballet, but at theage of 14 returned to the guitar and began composing herfirst songs. A year later, she left home, living with friendswhile making the rounds of the Buffalo, NY folk club cir-cuit. DiFranco had written over 100 original songs by theage of 19, In 1991 she hit the road alone, touring the nationin her Volkswagen and playing gigs wherever she could findthem. Her cult blossomed, and her distinct image, shavedhead, tattoos, and body piercings, soon became the derigueur look for her fans as well. As albums like 1992sImperfectly and 1993s Puddle Dive expanded hermusical ambitions as well as her following, DiFrancobecame the subject of considerable major-label interest, yet she steadfastly rejected all offers. DiFranco continued

playing over 200 dates a year, and soon even the main-stream media took notice of her cottage-industry music;after 1994s masterful Out of Range, she exploded with thefollowing years Not a Pretty Girl, which garnered noticefrom outlets ranging from CNN to The New York Times.Tickets are $35.00 fro the first 300 tickets sold, $45.00 for

April 10: The Endlos, 7:00pm, Center for the Arts, GValley. As with everything The Edlos do, theres no logreason, but after over two decades of music and insantheyve decided to gracefullyretire in 2011. This specialfarewell evening will feature ahost of well-known and well-loved tunes from their amaz-ing repertoire. They claim tobe from Planet A, which cir-cles the star Cappella. Whoknows? If The Edlos sense ofhumor is any indication, itsprobably true. One thing is for sure: when they take thstage, this quartet of unaccompanied singers never fatransport entire audiences with their unique combinaof outrageous gags and impeccable musicality, post-mern dynamics, and inventive vocal arrangements of evthing from Gregorian chants to the songs of the Beachas well as bizarre originals like those found on their n60s album, Retropella. Behind the jokes, costumery, wand other assorted mayhem, Eric Morris, Avi Jacobson

Larry Venza, and Craig Knudsen all have stellar reputaas classical performers as they are veterans of the SanFrancisco Opera Company and Pocket Opera, amongothers. Tickets are $22.00 for members and $25.00 formembers. For more information, visit www.centerforhearts.org or call 274-8384, ext14.
