CHAIR’S WELCOME

Welcome to our Spring production of Footloose. Originally released as a Hollywood film in 1984,Kevin Bacon made his cinematic breakthrough in the lead role as Ren. Footloose has recentlyenjoyed renewed success, with new film and stage versions: testament to the lasting appeal of itsenergy and great tunes. KLOG has attracted a number of new, young members to perform thisshow, which has added to the buzz!

This is director David Baxter and MD Lee Tesdale’s second production with KLOG, this time with a new choreographer, Sophie Baxter. They and the cast have lived and breathed Footloose for the last six months and have all worked really hard in rehearsals. We hope you enjoy the show as much as they have done in preparing it.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank first the KLOG committee, who work so tirelessly for the group; and also all the wonderful family and friends who all give their time so generously to help before and during show week. What you see on stage is really only the tip of quite a large iceberg (forgive a topical Titanic pun), and we couldn’t put on our great shows without all the background effort.

Similarly, can I give a huge thank you to Highcroft Veterinary Group in Longwell Green for their generous sponsorship of this production. Amateur theatre groups all over the country are struggling to survive in these hard economic times, and support of this kind is invaluable. The whole group isgrateful to Highcroft.

As ever, I must also thank our patrons, who support us year after year. And finally you, the audience, for supporting Footloose.

Our Autumn production will be a concert-style show: something of a new departure for KLOG, but one which will give us the opportunity to sing our favourite songs from our first 40(+) years. We hope you’ll want to come along and join in for what should be a fantastically entertaining night!

Now I’d better ‘cut loose’ and let you enjoy the show!

DAVID BAXTER DIRECTOR

David’s passion for theatre was ignited at the age of 4 by watching his sister Emily as a junior dancer in pantomime at the

Bristol Hippodrome. His first major role was in ‘Scrooge’ at the Hippodrome as Tiny Tim. Aged 11 David was accepted into The Royal Ballet School, and whilst training was lucky enough to regularly perform at the Royal Opera House, including the 1999 televised Nutcracker revival. He later moved to Arts Educational School in Tring, gaining experience within all areas of theatre, including directing. David thoroughly enjoyed compiling and directing Move On, a musical tribute to the life works of Stephen Sondheim and Bob Fosse which KLOG staged back in April last year. He is delighted to have now been given the opportunity to direct Footloose. David would like to wish the entire cast and crew the best of luck for show week and hopes you enjoy the show!

LEE TESDALE MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Lee discovered his passion for music at an early age, but it wasn’t until he was seven years old that he actually started

taking piano lessons. From this moment on, he has never missed an opportunity to perform. When Lee went to secondary school, he started playing for all kinds of different groups but it wasn’t until he played for his first school

production of My Fair Lady that he discovered his love of musical theatre. At the age of fifteen, Lee played in the band for Keynsham Youth Theatre’s production of Kiss Me Kate, before going on to join Keynsham Light Opera Group as our rehearsal pianist for The Bare Necessities of Disney in 2003. During his musical path, Lee has played for county orchestras and HTV’s production of A Christmas Carol. However Lee still wasn’t satisfied and it wasn’t until he was 21 that he was really able to grab the bull by the horns and take on the role of Musical Director in 2009 for Half A Sixpence. Lee would also like to wish the entire Footloose cast and production team the best of luck and every success with the show this week.

SOPHIE BAXTER CHOREOGRAPHER

Sophie started dancing at the age of 4 and has been training at The Dorothy Colebourne School of Dancing for the last 17

years. She is also currently undertaking a foundation course at the Bath Academy of Musical Theatre and is a member of Zenith Youth Theatre Company. Sophie recently made her professional debut in the UK Productions Dick Whittington as Ensemble/ Understudy Fairy and hopes to go on to train full time in Musical Theatre. Sophie is hugely proud of Footloose and would like to thank the cast (especially Grace Baxter for coming along at the last minute) for all their hard work (most of the time), and David and Lee for giving her the opportunity!

MAUREEN QUILTER STAGE MANAGER

Maureen first joined KLOG as a scenery painter in 1980 and learnt a great deal about scenery building and making do

with all sorts of scrap materials from Peter Dean who she says “was an amazing mentor”. After many brilliant shows with variousdifferent stage managers, Maureen felt brave enough to have a go herself and she has now thoroughly enjoyed the job for the last 9 years! “There is never a dull moment backstage and if you’ve never tried it, then do. I have a great crew and am looking forward to the show week.”

PAT CLEVERDON WARDROBE MISTRESS

Pat joined Keynsham Light Opera Group many years ago, from Yeovil (not mentioning the year!) During the

show Brigadoon, Pat started helping with the costumes, and has been in charge of our Wardrobe and Costume department ever since. Pat says that “every show has been a challenge” - we are all so very grateful for her massive contribution to the success of our productions over the years. Outside of the group, Pat is also a member of a local choir and enjoys singing all types of music.

FOOTLOOSE SYNOPSIS

In Chicago, a group of young people have gathered at their favourite dance club to unwind and say goodbye to Ren McCormack. Ren’s father has walked out, so he and his mother are forced to move in with her sister’s family in a small town nobody has ever heard of - Beaumont.

Ren soon finds himself at odds with the repressive atmosphere in Beaumont, where the spiritual life of the community is overseen by the power local minister Reverend Moore. Ren is stunned to learn that dancing is not allowed anywhere within the town limits of Beaumont. His new friends explain that this law dates back five years to a car accident that claimed the lives of four Beaumont teenagers. In the flood of grief and guilt that followed that tragedy, Reverend Moore managed to convince the town council to ban dancing. The only person seemingly unfazed by his iron-fisted control is his daughter Ariel.

Following a bout with her jealous boyfriend, Ren walks Ariel home and they find they have a lot in common. But Reverend Moore forbids Ariel to see Ren again, citing him as a troublemaker. Frustrated by his new stifling environment, Ren vows to “take on this town” and incites a revolution by his classmates to throw a dance.

Ren drives Ariel and their friends 100 miles outside Beau-mont to a dance hall where they party into the night. When Ariel finally arrives home, her defiance infuriates Reverend Moore, who denies that he has become too severe since the death of his son - one of the teenagers killed in the fateful car accident.

Ren goes to the church, but after a brief discussion in which Reverend Moore is unable to share his fears and motivation for continuing the ban, he asks Ren to leave and turns away. Appalled by his own actions, it is only then that the minister realises how much the pain of his son’s death has overshadowed his life, and the lives of everyone in Beaumont.

Will Reverend Moore have a change of heart and allow the young people of Beaumont to dance freely? Or will they simply defy him and dare to “cut loose?”
