PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

You are expected to arrive on Friday, May 30, 2014. RIT Croatia staff members will welcome you at the airport, escort you to the hotel and help you settle down. You will get basic instructions on how to get around the town, a city map and bus schedule. You will be accommodated in a 3 star hotel (free WiFi in the lobby and laundry service) in the Lapad area in Dubrovnik. Lapad is a tourist area with many hotels, restaurants, coffee bars and a well maintained pedestrian mall and walking path around the peninsula. This offers students many attractive locations for eating, relaxing and studying. The proximity of a supermarket and a green market is another convenience of this area.

On Saturday, May 31, 2014 you will have Orientation day at RIT Croatia. During Orientation, you will get more detailed information on living in Dubrovnik and Croatia in general, meet staff members and have a tour of the building. After that, you will have a guided tour of the Old Town (historical part of Dubrovnik which joined UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1997).

COURSES OFFERED:

MGMT – 489 Seminar in Management: Sustainable Small Business This seminar explores sustainable small business ventures with a focus on ecotourism in Croatia. Concepts of sustainability and its application in business, the economy, society and the environment will be explored in depth through field research and interviews with Croatian businesses as well as reading case studies. All businesses explored in this course will be small-scale and may be either for profit or non-profit enterprises. The course will also examine how business decisions are made while continuing to respect local tradition, culture and the natural environment. Credit 3

ENVS – 150 Concepts of Environmental Science This course will introduce students to the important concepts and issues of environmental science and presents the interdisciplinary principles of environmental science through the study of the earth's ecosystems with particular attention to their expression along Croatia’s Dalmatian coast and in protected areas of Croatia’s continental parts. To do this, elements of government, policy, ethics, economics, sociology, anthropology, history and engineering are embedded in the scientific matrix used to present this course to students. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a foundation for their environmental education.

The framework of this interdisciplinary study is to describe natural systems and their functions, identify and discuss problems caused by human interaction with the natural world, and investigate solutions to these problems. Current case studies will be used to illustrate the local, regional, and global dimensions of environmental problems and solutions.

Through assigned readings, classroom discussion and on-location exploration of local environmental issues, students will learn how to critically analyze environmental problems from a multidisciplinary and multicultural sensitive perspective and to propose solutions that work within the constraints of local human and financial resources.
