FOOTWEARSupplier capability in Indonesia

The development of Indonesia’s footwear industry remains robust as foreign investors increasingly set up factories in the archipelago.

Because manpower cost in Indonesia is comparatively lower than those in other emerging economies, many overseas-based manufacturers are establishing facilities in the country to augment production at home. Several prominent brands now operate locally, including Nike and adidas.

The influx of foreign capital has prompted the national administration to undertake initiatives beneficial to businesses, workers and the government. One of these is providing technical training to prospective laborers.

Casual and formal footwear are the major product types available in Indonesia. Sports shoes can also be sourced, although these are mainly made by licensees of famous labels.

Objective, methodology & scope

1. The majority of suppliers interviewed for this report plan to keep product prices unchanged in the next six months. This strategy will be adopted to safeguard competitiveness and buyer interest.

2. The industry anticipates shipments to continue growing in coming years as a result of expanding investment from foreign-based companies. The workforce is also forecast to increase significantly because of rising demand for skilled employees.

3. The EU is the sector’s largest export market for footwear suppliers. The US is the biggest individual overseas destination. In the next 12 months, more manufacturers expect to shift focus on markets in the Asia-Pacific region and Eastern Europe as demand from the EU is seen to

This Indonesia Sourcing Report is part of a series designed to provide buyers with information on new products from export manufacturers in supply markets that specialize in handmade merchandise.

The Developing Country Sourcing Report series is part of Global Sources’ corporate social responsibility initiatives. It is offered in conjunction with the Hinrich Foundation, whose mission is promoting sustainable global trade. One of its objectives is to help create jobs in developing Asia through export promotion.

To produce this report, large, midsize and emerging manufacturers, all with substantial export experience, were surveyed. The selection of suppliers is designed to reflect the composition of the industry in Indonesia in terms of geographic location, materials used and range of products offered.

For in-depth profiles, our researchers visited the facilities of each company and interviewed senior executives who discussed their recent performance and provided forecasts for the next 12 months. All other makers in this report were either visited or contacted by phone.

In each case, companies were required to answer specific questions designed to verify their manufacturing and export credentials, including a breakdown of exports by product type and market. Suppliers also participated in a survey designed to provide insight into the industry.

This report covers the main types of footwear available in Indonesia, including casual and formal shoes made mainly of genuine and synthetic leather, fabric, plastic and rubber. Each product category has its own price guide that describes features of low-end, midrange and high-

end models.The Industry Overview section

discusses key issues affecting export manufacturers. It provides insight on the composition of the industry and elaborates on the important supply centers within Indonesia.

The Products & Prices section details the features and price ranges of footwear. It also examines the design and manufacturing processes, main materials used, and sourcing centers where components are procured.

decline due to the sovereign debt crisis.

4. Low labor expenditure is the main competitive advantage enjoyed by the local industry. Compared with China and other sourcing centers in Southeast Asia, outlay for manpower in Indonesia is among the most cost-effective.

5. The island of Java is home to the majority of supply zones within Indonesia. Many manufacturers are located in the province of Banten, which boasts good transportation and power infrastructure.

6. Products scheduled for release in the coming year will generally have colorful designs and feature a variety of patterns and motifs. Models in plain styles and basic profiles will also experience high demand.
