The LCA Relief Fund was formed at theonset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In total, $1,184,014.56 was distributed inaid to individuals and families. Fundswere raised from donor contributions,local foundations, and United Waydollars, as well as $465,484.82 in CARESRelief Funding through Dane County. Atotal of 2112 applications were receivedfor aid within 2 weeks of making the fundaccessible.

Community members completed anonline screener application (individuallyor with support from LCA organizations)asking for some basic informationregarding loss of wages, financial impact,and other sources of support. Fundstargeted the undocumented community.

Once screened, applicants received acall back from staff associated with anyof the following 5 organizations (Centro,Latino Chamber of Commerce, Unidos,Latino Academy of WorkforceDevelopment, Sunshine Place, or theLatino Children and Families Council).The staff did an intake and assessment ofneeds, as well as provided additionalresources during a time of crisis.

The Latinx Consortium for Action (LCA)is a coalition of leaders representingdifferent Latinx-led organizations,professional associations andeducational groups in Dane County.The group has been existence since2016 and represents a space forcollective strategy building and actionon behalf of the Latinx community.

Members of the LCA include: LatinoHealth Council of Dane County, LatinoEducation Council, Common WealthDevelopment, Latino Chamber ofCommerce of WI, Centro Hispano ofDane County (Centro), LatinoAcademy of Workforce Development& Orgullo Latinx LGBT+ of DaneCounty, UNIDOS, Latino ProfessionalsAssociation of Greater Madison (LPA),Latino Children and Families Council,Voces de la Frontera - Madison, LatinoSupport Network (LaSup), La MovidaRadio, Big Brothers Big Sisters,Adelante Madison

RESULTS

Latinx make up about of Wisconsin’s population, but of the state’s confirmed COVID cases and ofhospitalizations. Nationally, data from the Centers forDisease Control and Prevention indicate that Latinx aretimes more likely to be infected and times more likelyto be hospitalized when compared to white non-HispanicAmericans.

Latinx are likely to have jobs that can be doneremotely and likely to work in the industriesdubbed “essential” during the pandemic.

Latinx are also likely to live in multigenerational orcrowded homes, increasing potential exposure and makingit hard for those who get sick to isolate.
