Tim takes you on an exciting 3D computer simulated ‘flight’ through the afar region of the African Rift Valley above and below the surface, visualising the active volcanoes and the magma chambers beneath them. This is an active tectonic area that shows us what happens when the earth’s crust pulls apart in the first stages of ocean formation.

Lindsay participated in a field project which is one of the largest and most ambitious ever undertaken to study tornadoes, using a mobile armada of over 100 scientists and 40 research vehicles. This took place in the USA during May and June 2009 and 2010 with a team from the Center for Severe Weather Research who operate three mobile radars and six instrumented-packed vehicles.
Lindsay presents some of the basic science behind tornadoes and the storms that produce them. She describes the instruments used to collect data and the logistics of coordinating a large fleet of vehicles. In particular Lindsay talks about her role in the team and her experiences of getting up close and personal with severe weather.
