FINAL WEEKS FOR INTERWOVEN Perth audiences have less than two weeks to experience never-before-seen art created by makers from Aboriginal Australia, Papua New Guinea and Asia. Interwoven, showing now until 9 April, brings to life Aboriginal, Melanesian and Asian art at the University of Western Australia’s Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. Everything present in the exhibition is sourced from the from the university’s extensive Berndt Museum collection, which comprises one of the most important research collections on Aboriginal Australian art and culture in the world. Central to the exhibition is the idea that through an object you can feel an intimate connection with its maker despite the separation of time, distance and a very different culture. Members of the Berndt Museum team chose each of the works present in Interwoven and wrote why, out of the tens of thousands of items in the museum’s collection, their selection spoke the loudest to them. They write of how a cloth can take you back to your childhood, what grass and paper say about the enduring strength of a people and how a mask made to decorate a yam (and thus show off a man’s gardening prowess) can leave you with questions you’ll never quite answer. History and culture weigh on each object and through that intersection visitors to Interwoven will feel a connection to cultures and peoples through common experiences of love, loss and the drive to enjoy everyday life. FINAL WEEKS FOR INTERWOVENPerth audiences have less than two weeks to experience never-before-seen art created by makers from Aboriginal Australia, Papua New Guinea and Asia.
