advisor’sletterThere is a well-known quote by Greek philosopher /

scientist Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) which states that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”, which

is very true when you compare working in silo to synergizing (which means working together). Consider a talented individual musician’s performance, despite being extraordinary, may pale in comparison with the impact and transcendence of a full orchestra would have on an audience.

In the present day and age of connectivity, competing to defend one’s turf can sometimes be detrimental to an industry, market or society as a whole. To borrow a term from the IT world, more people these days are embracing the “open source” concept of knowledge sharing and collaboration to bring about greater impact on societies, and as a result create more commonalities among peoples. Just look at how Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the many mobile apps that have brought millions of people together on the same platform. Content developers on the other hand are on a common mission to develop the next big hit or catch the latest wave. Convergence is the current wave.

When applying the above concept to Taylor’s University’s Student Experience, this coming together has achieved much success in terms of student bonding, community building and social welfare; personal / professional development;

Coming Together As One

academic, extra-curricular and sporting achievements; and even in inter-networking and international relations. As we share our expertise and know-how with others, we too gain much by learning from others through mutual exchange; and we grow from these experiences to become better individuals and self-aware citizens collectively.

In this issue, you will read about the numerous impactful events which have brought together communities from all walks of life – from standing up against human trafficking to inspiring orphaned children through exposure to creativity and entrepreneurship; as well as various achievements in global graduate employability, marketing competitions, sporting events, conferences, visitations and multicultural celebrations. As you will see, there are many opportunities for empowerment through community collaboration on our campus.

As we reach the midway point of the year, my encouragement to you is to go beyond your comfort zones, boundaries and territories to explore collaborative possibilities and seek breakthroughs through working together towards a common goal. To quote English poet John Donne (1572 – 1631) from his meditations – “no man is an island”. We are all interconnected with our surroundings in one way or another, especially with the people around us.

Reach out to others as you are inspired!

Sincerely,Angela PokVice-President, Student ExperienceTaylor’s University

Under the Taylor’s Talent Management Programme, Project Freeze aimed to give back to the greater community while creating an impact on students through realisation of

modern slavery and the crimes that perpetuates such activities.

In order to raise greater awareness of human trafficking in Malaysia, Project Freeze had planned to adopt various forms of art, stunt and flash mobs by gathering participants at selected places to "FREEZE" in their actions for a length of time to highlight for the cause.

In the build-up to the event, the team sold Project Freeze merchandises such as USB wristbands and t-shirts to promote

the cause. On 14th April, over 300 volunteers went into a Freeze mode that lasted 5 minutes in midday! Some were really creative by dressing up in a Spiderman costume and a soldier uniform.

Project Freeze is supported by the SUKA Society that benefitted RM3,132 in donations through the project, which included 60 custom-made tees that were presented to them. SUKA will then channel the funds towards the aid of human trafficked victims and government shelters across Malaysia.

Chasing Light –Outreach and InspiringNeedy Children

As part of another Taylor’s Talent Management project, a group of five student leaders were assigned to create more opportunities for children of difficult circumstances to be celebrated as unique and valued individuals. Themed ‘Chasing Light’, this initiative aims to send forth

positive vibes to the community and inspire youths to discover and follow their passion.

Calling themselves the ‘Light Kindlers’, this group reached out to Rumah Kasih Harmoni, a girls’ home in Petaling Jaya, and invited them to the campus for various workshops held every weekend in the month of April.

The first two workshops conducted were on Business and IT. In the Business workshop, the girls were taught principles of marketing products and how to go about selling, while in the IT workshop they learnt how to design marketing material for these products.

In the following weekend, the girls attended two workshops in Design and Engineering where they were given a chance to design water rockets. Referring to a prototype, they designed and decorated their own rockets with recycled materials. Some of them displayed creativity with Hello Kitty designs and their favourite anime characters. Their hard work was also put to the test in the open air at the car park where they launched their water rockets!

On the third week, more excitement followed when the Light Kindlers brought the girls to Petrosains, The Discovery Centre at KLCC, where they experienced 'fun and learn' through various integrated programmes.

The final workshop was on Creativity where the workshop consists of two fun and creative projects (Project 1: Self-Expression through Objects and Project 2: Thank You! Card). This workshop allowed the girls to explore the elements of "self' through artwork and use of different colouring materials, while giving them a channel to unleash their creativity. Apart from being creative, the girls were also taught on how to express their appreciation through their work. Hence they each made a card for the person they wished to thank.

The evening ended with a graduation party where everyone was treated to pizza. All the girls were presented with a certificate of participation and prizes were awarded to the best team for their work from each workshop. A compilation of memorable photos were also presented to them that night. It was a touching moment with tears of joy from all!

World Fest 2014 –Coming together of

Uniqueness and Oneness

Highlights - Community Integration

On the evening of 9th May, cultural integration amongst international and local students were on its best display as more than 700 global citizens including Taylorians and

guests from the general public congregated at The Grand Hall, to celebrate cultural diversity. The night of brightly lit colours, intercultural mingling and dancing helped set the tone in promoting “Diversity, Equality and Unity” on campus.

Audiences were treated to an international cocktail / buffet which accompanied 12 sizzling performances by Taylor’s international student communities as well as those from guest institutions. Participants were also kept on edge throughout the night as numerous prizes such as holiday stay packages and dozens of dining and shopping vouchers were being drawn, courtesy of Holiday Tours and Travel, The Westin KL, Sunway Lagoon, The

Ritz-Carlton KL, Mandarin Oriental KL, Billion Pavilion Resort, TGI Fridays and Zalora.

The crowds were cheering voraciously all night for a number of their favourite performers, with many joining in dancing in front of the stage. At night’s end, only the Top 3 performances walked away with trophies – Taylor’s African Society as grand winners for having the most international appeal and interest, followed by first runners up Taylor’s Bangladesh and Pakistani Society (combined), and The Origins of Taylor’s University Dance Club second.

It was certainly a night to remember, with the warm reception, keen participation from all nationalities and a common platform to celebrate both our uniqueness and oneness.

Taylor’s Graduates Employed in Hong Kong

The annual Career and Employment Fair at Taylor’s is one marked calendar event that is not to be missed by any student looking to initiate their internships or career placements with prospective top employers. Held on 9th April at The Grand Hall,

this year’s instalment drew 53 Top Employers and 1,032 students to networking and job placement opportunities.

This time around, we have asked our participating Top Employers on what they have observed in Taylor’s graduates.

One of the aims of Taylor’s Career Services is to identify and place students with top employers, not just locally but within the region and beyond. A recent achievement

has been with two Engineering students, Lim Xi Kai (graduated) and Khek Chun Hong (July graduation), who were offered positions in Crystal Group’s Management Trainee Programme. They will be placed in a manufacturing facility at Zhongshan, China.

Established in 1970, the Hong Kong-based Crystal Group of Companies is a leading international OEM / ODM garment manufacturer with over 48,000 employees across 20 locations and have an annual turnover of over US$1.6 billion. Congratulations to the two graduates for their successful placement in commencing their careers!

Taylor’s –L'Oréal BrandstormGRAND CHAMPIONS!

In the early hours of 13th June (Malaysian time), Taylor’s received great news directly from Paris that Taylor’s Team Trilogics had been crowned International Grand Champions

for the L'Oréal Brandstorm 2014. Team Trilogics had earlier emerged champions in the National Finals which was held on 6th May, who then went on to represent Malaysia in the International Finals at Paris.

Vincent Yeo, Edmund Chee (both International Business and Marketing students) and Karen Wan (Mass Communication – Advertising major) were thoroughly elated and in disbelief at their achievement, winning the recognition and the grand prize of a trip to a city of their choice worth €10,000. The trio had beaten 129 other students from 43 international teams at Paris in the annual marketing competition, creating history as the first Malaysian team to have done so.

According to adweek.com, what set Trilogics apart was their ability to identify a particular market need, obtain supporting data and present an innovative solution with potentially far-reaching impact in the global market. The team also convincingly drove

The InvestSmart Campaign, a youth education initiative jointly organised by Securities Commission Malaysia, Taylor’s Business School, Business Development and

Career Services Centre, was launched on 19th June at the newly opened LT21 and LT22. Launched by our guest of honour, YB En. Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, Minister of Youth and Sports, this platform looked to promote and increase financial literacy among the youth and to educate about making sound investments decisions.

The event featured investment-related outdoor games, including mini-football and mini-basketball, where participants interacted with booths / stations to explore different aspects of investment planning. A forum entitled “Take Control of your Life and Finances:

Anything and Everything is Possible”, was held concurrently to provide an avenue for dialogue with industry experts on financial investments. Moderated by David Chew of BFM Radio, the panellists comprised of four successful young entrepreneurs, one of which is Mr. Shanker Joyrama, Founder and CEO of Orion Social Media and a Taylor’s University alumnus.

The forum which provided informative and engaging dialogue between the entrepreneurs and audiences was attended by both students (mainly from Taylor’s University Student Council, Taylor’s AIESEC, Entrepreneurship and Investment Club, Accounting Club, and Taylor’s Scholars) and external visitors who found out about the event prior to the launch.

Sowing the seeds ofStudent Employability

Chinese Debaters’National VarsityAchievement

As Career Services continues to provide greater avenues for students and employers to seek internship

placement and graduate employment, it is now incorporating technological enhancements in providing better flexibility and access to its services. Introducing seeds, a fully automated and interactive online system for real-time internship and employment management, catering to both employers and students.

Officially launched on 22nd May with the goal of further enhancing student employability, it is an extension of the value-added service of providing employers and students with employment / job applicant information, along with the tools to find the right job match. Students who are seeking internship placement or looking to land their desired graduate positions, visit seeds now at https://seeds.taylors.edu.my.

Taylor’s University Chinese Debate team, which is formed by Taylor’s Chinese Society, participated in the 2014 National Varsity Chinese Debate Competition that was held

at University of Malaya. The team, which consists of a captain and six debaters, was coached by their own lecturer advisor, Mr. Leong Boon Tik.

While it was their first time entering such an esteemed competition and despite being eliminated in the preliminary round, they managed to win the best speaker award. It is a big progressive step for the team as they continue to build confidence and aim to achieve more wins. We wish them more future success as they look to participate in other similar competitions to come.

In its continuous efforts to promote social interaction and transition into a multicultural diverse learning environment, Taylor’s International Student Services had given the

opportunity to four of its international student leaders to attend the 2nd KDU International Student Conference in Batu Ferringhi, Penang. Held from 11th to 14th June, the conference which was themed “Dealer in Hope, Leader in Action” was a student-led event and aimed to inspire, create and develop the participants into leaders of the future.

Attended by 120 students from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mauritius, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan and Tanzania, the event provided students from these countries an opportunity to express their voice, views or thoughts for a better future. Together with the sharing of insights by various corporate and academic leaders, this conference was a gateway for the delegates to explore different out-of-the-box ideas and new perspectives.

Festival Colours of the World Taylor’s University Cultural Art Performers (TRADISI) was

established only a year ago but they have definitely come of age as they entered their first big competition

in 8th June titled “Festival Colors Of The World” (FESCO 2014) which was organised by The University of Technology PETRONAS (UTP).

Hosted annually since 2008, the event by UTP aims to promote the sense of appreciation of both local and foreign cultural arts as well as providing a platform for the students to showcase their talent in the performing arts. The 7th FESCO focuses on the theme “Kreasi Baru” or “New Creation”, which emphasises on incorporating new styles and ways of dancing,

without neglecting and keeping intact our traditional cultures and arts in the dances.

Our TRADISI performers managed to reach the Final 15 and competed with renowned names in the competition such as Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA) and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Although their first attempt for a win didn’t materialise, reaching the Final 15 is quite an achievement, as competing with long-established institutions is a great experience in itself for our TRADISI performers, and should provide motivation to do much better in the future.

made a visiting stop at Taylor’s University on 17th June as part of their learning trip throughout Malaysia, visiting

other private higher institutions of learning. The learning focus of the trip was to study the integration between local and international students, and exchanging best practices in cultivating a campus environment that is more inclusive of all multi-cultural backgrounds.

As 19 members comprising the Student Union and International Student Ambassador Scheme along with two staff representatives from their Student Affairs arrived at the Lakeside Campus, they were very impressed at the sight of the modern tropical design and campus facilities. Taylor’s International Student Services hosted the guests as both sides politely exchanged university presentations, tokens of appreciation and enjoyed lunch together at Truffles. It was certainly an enjoyable treat for the visitors who are undergraduate students majoring in accountancy, business, nursing, textiles, design, engineering and language.

Taylor’s University Dance Club’s very own crew, The Origins, emerged as third place winners in the Hiruscar Step Up Dance Competition held in Berjaya Times

Square on 7th June. This is the second year that Hiruscar has organised this competition which drew participants from secondary schools, colleges and universities from around the Klang Valley.

The competition consisted of two stages where at the first stage, the dance crews submitted “flash mob” videos for public voting in the elimination round; and the second stage being the final showdown round at Berjaya Times Square. After

Taylor's University Student Council Annual Ball returned with much fanfare with the revealing of a teaser poster that went viral in May! Over a few weeks, details of the

ball were released in bits and pieces… revealing the venue, early-bird prices and ultimately the theme – “Old Hollywood Glamour: A Murder Mystery”.

The ball welcomed 170 guests dressed impeccably on the evening of 14th June at the Grand Millennium Hotel, Kuala Lumpur… while a “mysterious murder” took place on the same night that required them to be detectives in resolving the much talked-about mystery through a play. The Society of Performing Arts of Taylor’s University (SPART) was absolutely brilliant in the execution of the play which brought much suspense and anticipation!

The event team comprised 56 performers, photographers, volunteers and council members who ensured the night was a success. The evening was a talent showcase with performances from the Taylor’s University Symphony Orchestra, Beatbox Club and other independent performers who put up an amazing show during the event. Sponsorships-in-kind worth RM6,700 were also raised to hold the annual ball which signified a celebration of friendship, both new and old who will cherish moments like this for years to come.

The climax of the night saw one lucky prize winner walking away with a 3D2N stay package at The Westin Langkawi Resort and Spa courtesy of SPEC Property, while a guest detective who solved the murder mystery walked away with a RM300 cash prize courtesy of Group MAD.

months of preparation and an intense online voting period, The Origins clinched the RM1,000 prize money and an additional RM1,000 for receiving the highest number of votes for their flash mob dance video.

“The Origins” was formed when some former members of the Taylor’s Dance Club returned to collaborate with the new members to participate in the Hiruscar Step Up Dance Competition. They are: Arya Samudra, Foo Yean Wearn, Hendry William, Lau Yi Wei, Pue Ko Xin, Tan Ying Ying, Timothy Tey, Woo Win Kit Damien, Wong Jern Choon and Arvin Tang.

In the heat of battle

Taking time out from the stresses of student life, Best Buddies Connect organised a Canopy Walk outing at the Forestry Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) Kepong on

12th April. Comprising both local and international students, the group of 14 new and old buddies on a time-out left the hustle and bustle of the city and stepped into the cool and calming rainforest at FRIM. Taking in the awe-inspiring sights of the forest reserve, the students trekked among the trees (which are over a hundred years old) on the Canopy Walk which spans 150 meters and dangles 30 meters above the ground.

The Canopy Walk was originally constructed for scientific study of flora and fauna and it offers a wonderful panoramic view of the forest and Kuala Lumpur from that vantage point. Besides its educational guided forest trek and other interesting programmes, FRIM is a popular weekend picnic spot among Malaysians and tourists. The students were amazed by the height of the trees as they strolled along the treetops while learning about the different tree, plant and animal species that inhabit the tropical rainforest ecosystem.
