Café le rendezvous, an integral part of the prestigious Alliance Française opened its doors on July 29. An all day café, serving breakfast through the day and offering up a wholesome and hearty menu, it is a place to relax, and eat good, well prepared food. The café has a selection of whole-wheat sandwiches, pasta, salad and desserts.

The soul of le rendezvous is its food. A disparate mish mash of cuisines from around the world, it is infused with a healthy dose of local flavor and influence using ingredients that are seasonal and fresh. The spices are toned down and in true European fashion; each ingredient is allowed its moment in the spot light.

The menu changes frequently and is augmented by a weekly changing specials menu, to pamper the palate with an assortment of flavours. So whilst one week there could be a Thai curry on the menu, another week could be Middle Eastern salads.

French food is an essential part of the menu and the café offers items such as crepes, vol au vent, ratatouille, crouque monsieur, croissants, lemon tart, quiche etc.

This winter, the café is gearing up for some exciting events. Looking forward to seeing you….

A video-gaming Evening !

Wednesday, 12 February 2014 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Valentine’s Day is considered as a celebration of love in many countries! It gives us the chance to show you the most beautiful love songs of the Francophone world and help you celebrate this Valentine’s Day differently. France has the image of a romantic country, largely because of the artists who got success worldwide with their love songs. We simultaneously think about Edith Piaf, who received worldwide recognition for her songs: ‘Hymnes à l’amour’ and ‘La vie en rose’. You will discover the hymns about love of yesterday and today, original love songs to scream out your feelings for those special ones with joy or despair.

Do you adore French as a language? However, do you find like some of other students that the grammar is a hindrance on your way to explore the vast French culture?

Voila, we are here to help you sort out this problem albeit with our happy twist. We will make it more interesting this time by bringing in class some of French songs, cinema, funny but useful videos, the literary texts and things alike.

We will run the class keeping in mind few of the tenses, the articles, the adjectives, the nouns, the pronouns, sentence formation, the modes like Imperative and Indicative and of course we always wish to keep it a la carte after all! Join us in class then!

Even if you’re a fashion freak and you find it difficult while flicking through the pages of your magazine when you bump into some of French expressions, if you’re learning French, you’re most welcome!

I got the opportunity to attend a training organized by l’ Institut Français. The principal objective of the training was to acquaint the professors with the functionalities of the social networking site “la salle des profs” which is a platform for all the teachers of French in India. A platform where they can share their knowledge and their experiences. The purpose of the training was also to create a larger team that can later on train teachers, in their respective Alliances, who would continue to contribute to the site. The other objective being how to make the maximum use of all the resources available online in a class of French as a foreign or a second language.

The organization of the training was impeccable and we were immediately made to feel at home. The trainers were excellent and they religiously followed the objectives. In 4 days time, I discovered a lot many aspects of online resources, I learnt how to maneuver the site and find myself well equipped to continue contributing to the site. I am looking forward to sharing all that I have learnt with my colleagues and we promise to come up with innovative ways to make our classes more and more interesting.

at the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad Main missions of the Heritage Section are: • to offer a work-space with multimedia tools to the researchers working in the field of heritage conservation. • to create a common heritage resource base for free access. • to undertake projects related to various aspects of heritage (temporary exhibitions, conventions and presentation of research work and artistic other projects) • to create a network of human resources, especially by creating scientific and/or artistic projects. Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad already entered into a partnership with the Ecole Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO), Paris, to facilitate exchanges of documents and the researches and projects by French and Indian scholars.

The French School of Asian Studies was founded in 1900 in Saigon. The mission of the EFEO is interdisciplinary research on the civilizations of Asia, extending from India to Japan. A network of seventeen research centers in twelve Asian countries allows its 42 research scholars (anthropologists, archaeologists, linguists, historians and others) to carry out their fieldwork while maintaining a network of local specialists and Asianists from around the world. Visiting scholars benefit from the School’s local academic partnerships and its rich documentary collections that represent over a century of research. The EFEO is now in the centre of an international network of leading scholars in Asian studies. To know more about the Ecole Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO),visit http://www.efeo.fr/(the website has an English version)

To conduct the various activities, the Alliance Française benefits of the expertise and network of Dr. Sara Keller

As a building archaeologist Dr. Sara Keller studies the medieval architecture of Gujarat through the analysis of its archaeological remains and technical characteristics. She is associated with the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and the History Department of the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda. Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad, in cooperation with the Ecole Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO), will welcome Mr. Pierre Lachaier in Gujarat in January-February 2014.

Please meet Pierre Lachaier...

After having studied in France and Germany and worked with an Indian NGO, Mr. Lachaier did his PhD. in Social Anthropology. He is Membre of Centre for India and South Asian Studies (CEIAS, Paris) and worked as the researcher at the Pondicherry centre during 1995-2001. Since then in Paris, he continues to pursue his research work on the trading networks of India, particularly in Gujarat, but also in France and Portugal. With a few colleagues, he founded in 2004 a group working on the Gujarati and Sindhi studies (Society, Language and Culture).

Abstract of research by Pierre Lachaier, Architectural and Sociological Study of Urban Ahmadabadi Neighborhoods: “With about 3.5 lakhs of inhabitants still living in hundreds of closed neighborhoods called pols or mohallos, the ancient walled city of Ahmedabad appears today as an exceptional heritage of historical and architectural value, worth to be preserved, for India as well as for the world over. This has been realized, not only by the Municipal Authorities, but also abroad, by some foreign specialists of India, such as some French architects. (…) However, very few social scientists have studied in depth the neighborhoods of Ahmedabad: the only existing monograph on this subject was published by Harish Doshi in 1974, whereas another sociological study of a pol, made by a Gujarati student in 2000 about, had remained unpublished in India. These neighborhoods are inhabited by diversified Hindu, Jain and Muslim communities. Although, many have today a mixed population, some have maintained their original character. But it is often assumed that they are all internally organized and regulated on a similar pattern. From a sociological point of view, this is of course not tenable: a good dozen of village studies had to be made before an acceptable representation of an Indian village community could be elaborated. Pols and mohallas are certainly not urban villages; but more sociological studies of them must be done. Their architectural studies are not enough; their studying by social scientists and architects working together must be encouraged, and this is the dynamic that the Alliance Française Ahmedabad would like to establish in collaboration with Indian and French partners, among them the EFEO, and with the institutional support of the Embassy of France in India.”

We are also glad to announce that

Mr. Pierre Lachaier will be part of the

National Seminar on Indian Heritage:

Perspectives and Prospects, to be held at Mahatma Mandir,

Gandhinagar

January 10-11, 2014

15

Besides working on his own researches in the city and engage with various scholars in Gujarat, Pierre Lachaier will interact on 2 occasions at the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad. It will be the occasion to discuss about social sciences in the context of Ahmedabad today, but also about Ethno- Architecture.

How to build a capital, and how to preserve it? Architectural heritage in Bukhara (16th century and later)

The city of Bukhara in Uzbekistan is world famous for its architectural heritage. Mosques, Madrasas and other religious buildings, but also commercial structures and residential quarters of the past have been preserved in a unique ensemble. The lecture aims at identifying architectural traditions and concepts of urbanism that contributed to the re-shaping of Bukhara as a capital during the 16th century. Some results from recent research that a group of German scholars has conducted in Bukhara will be presented in this context. Further, it will be asked how the historical city of Bukhara fared after the Soviet takeover in 1920, under the conditions of modern urban planning, and under the label of UNESCO world heritage. Lorenz Korn is professor of Islamic art and archaeology at the University of Bamberg (Germany). He received his PhD from the University of Tübingen, with a thesis on building politics under the dynasty of the Ayyubids in Egypt and Syria (12th-13th cent.). His research focuses on the history of architecture of the central Islamic lands between the 10th and the 16th century.

Art Talk – Presentation of the artistic creation and first feedback of the artists about their work on “Idiomas”. A unique opportunity to be part of this Indo-French project and to engage an open conversation with the artists.

French Gallery23 January 2014, 7:00 pm

The Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad is having the privilege to welcome Vaishali Trivedi & Sébastien Vela Lopez during a week. During this time, this Indo-French team will take possession of our Gallery to work on their next artistic creation, “Idiomas”. It is not everyday that we will have the chance to observe a working process in the field of Dance and we are all looking forward to be privileged spectators of their rehearsals.

One speaks Gujarati and English and the other French and Spanish. One dances hiphop and the other Kathak. The differences are many: gender, religion, roots, geography, culture, traditions…

For many years, thanks to their dance, Vaishali Trivedi and Sebastien Vela Lopez have been

communicating through their bodies in other choreographers’ creations. Today, their desire is strong to meet on the stage and to express fully in their own ways through this first communication tool. The dance thus becomes the speech and the language that breaks the barriers set by profound differences.

How to understand one another without words? What if the words didn’t exist anymore?

And if the only language was movement, could we communicate?

The universal language, does it really exist?

This is all about the meeting between Vaishali Trivedi and Sebastien Vela Lopez.

The Festival of Non-Violence, to renew discussions and thinking on these issues in an increasingly violent world. With agression and violence against women, Dalits and Adivasis on the rise, Darpana wished to expand the scope of the 2014 festival to include college and school level activities and debates, five days of performances and workshops by visiting artists engaged in pushing for peace and non violence through their art. The Festival starts on 30 January 2014 and goes on till 4 February 2014.

Chassol will present in Ahmedabad his new show: INDIAMORE. Shot in Kolkata and Varanasi in July 2012, with this film, Chassol honors India. The film crosses the lives of musicians, singers, dancers, but also taxi drivers, fishermen and children: unforeseen musical encounters. Chassol will be accompanied by a drummer to perform the film.

Pianist, composer, arranger and musical director, Christophe Chassol discovered music at the age of four. Impressed by the soundtrack of the film La Tour Infernale and sixteen years of studies at the conservatory, his ambition from the very start was to compose for films, unite sounds and images to produce music of great elegance, in the tradition of Jerry Goldsmith Michel, Magne and Quincy Jones. In the mid 90s, he began composing for the big screen, television and advertising. From 1994 to 2002, he became a conductor and then discovered the world of pop music by accompanying artists such as Phoenix and Sébastien Tellier. Chassol is the author of an unclassifiable oeuvre. His compositions articulate voice, music, sounds and images in a very innovative way, the ‘harmonization of the real’ remaining central to his practice.

This Festival will surprise you with the various displays that we have chosen in order to reach more and more people by taking photography out of the traditional spaces. This time we will invest in the public spaces to offer an alternative relationship between you and your city.

Today photography is practised in many forms: art, hobby, social activity... We say that it has become the most popular Art form, at a time when all the mobile phones are equipped with cameras. Everybody can be a photographer and everyone can appreciate photography. So let’s celebrate together the great diversity and dynamism of modern-day!

The program will include exhibitions and talks but also interactive events like the “Ahmedabad Archives” photo competition and a Scavenger Hunt through the social media platform Instagram. Maybe you will also see a Mobile Photo Booth in the streets of Ahmedabad…

The full and detailed program will be available online on the website of the Alliance Française

d’Ahmedabad (ahmedabad.afindia.org)and its Facebook Page.

From the hoarding boards in the western part of the city to Manekchawk and some pols, we are inviting you to look for and discover the photographs of Uzma Mohsin and Viviane Dalles on Women’s issues. At the same time you could appreciate around Manekchawk the HOLI festival series by Xavier Zimbardo.

Thanks to the support of Selvel Media, which will bring photographs on some hoardings in the city, the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad is very pleased to be associated with Jyoti Sangh, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and founded by Ms. Mrudula Sarabhai, to address Women’s issues in contemporary India.

A talk will be organized around a panel of eminent speakers to discuss with women and men together, about some of the issues that women have to (still) face in our modern societies. We are also inviting you to discover the permanent photo exhibition displayed inside the Jyoti Sangh building on Relief Rd; which depicts the journey of women’s emancipation, through 75 years, in India and Gujarat in particular.

In Ahmedabad, we can never talk too much about Heritage! During the festival Fête de la Photo the City Heritage Center will be the starting point of the activities proposed in the old city. We encourage you to visit the Center to know more about the various initiatives towards restoration and revitalization projects.

Ahmedabad Archives - Photo Competition

The theme for the competition remains ‘Living Heritage of Ahmedabad’. The three most promising photographs will be awarded cash prizes of Rs. 15,000; Rs.10,000 and Rs.5,000 from the organisers – Akar Unlimited besides a special prize from Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad.

To know more about the rules and regulations of the competition, log on to the Facebook page of Ahmedabad Archives – www.facebook.com/ahmedabadarchives or write to Anuja Khokhani at [email protected]

Scavenger Hunt with your smart phones, with the instagrammers_ahmedabad groupThe group members gather and shoot various interesting sights. They also organise photowalks where people meet and walk around old city to shoot and upload pictures using identical hashtags. The idea is to meet fellow instagrammers and discover and highlight the heritage on the city.

Instead of paper of instructions/clues there will be a user profile that participants need to follow. That profile will have pictures of a set of pictorail or textual clues. When participants solve the clue by reaching to the place they will upload their findings along with their photos in their own profiles. The moderator will examine the profile of participants to check the success and declare the winner. The game can be better played in teams of 3-4 players per team. Duration can be from 1 to 1.5 hours.

“La Princesse de Montpensier” by Bertrand Tavernier

“Adieu Gary” by Nassim Amaouche

Date : 10 January 2014Time : 7:00 pm

Date : 31 January 2014Time : 7:00 pm

Bertrand Tavernier is in top form with this gripping, superbly mounted drama set against the savage Catholic/Protestant wars that ripped France apart in the 16th century. Based on a novella by the celebrated Madame de Lafayette, the action centers on the love of Marie de Mezières for her dashing cousin Henri de Guise, thwarted when her father’s political ambitions force her into marriage with the well-connected Philippe de Montpensier, who she has never met. When Philippe is called away to fight, she is left in the care of Count Chabannes, an aging nobleman with a disdain for warfare, and soon becomes exposed to the sexual and political intrigues of court.

In the middle of a forgotten French suburb, a family and close friends day-dream of life and love. In this debut feature by writer/director Nassim Amaouche, we become embroiled in their world, discovering the ties that bind the various characters, crafted by a brilliant French-Arab ensemble cast that includes Jean-Pierre Bacri, Dominique Reymond, Yasmine Belmadi and Alexandre Bonnin. The film revolves around conscientious Francis, his recently freed ex-con son Samir, neighbour (and Francis’ illicit lover) Maria and her imaginative son José - who deals with all this by escaping into a Wild West fantasy world where his father is cowboy hero Gary Cooper.

Date : 28 February 2013Time : 7:00 pm

As the mayor of a small town in southwestern France, Simon Wolberg arouses as much annoyance as enthusiasm. On the campaign trail, this eloquent, educated man, inspiring but a little too controlling, doesn’t hesitate when it comes to interfering in the privacy of his citizens.

It’s the same at his own home. Reluctantly welcoming into his home his bohemian brother with whom he doesn’t get along, the father hen tries to prevent him from setting a bad example for his young son, who secretly harbors artistic ambitions. Simon also overprotects his daughter, who hides her intentions to leave home in a few days, as soon as she reaches eighteen. In addition, the mayor tries to keep the flames of his marriage alive, not realizing that his deeply unhappy wife is considering leaving him.

The Illusionist is one of a dying breed of stage entertainers. With emerging rock stars stealing his thunder in the late 1950s, he is forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theatres, at garden parties and in bars and cafés. Then, while performing in a village pub off the west coast of Scotland, he encounters Alice, an innocent young girl, who will change his life forever. Hello Everyone,

I am happy to inform you that 2 French schools (IESEG Business School and ESC Rennes) have signed the MOU with IIM Ahmedabad in the month of December for an exchange program.

In further CampusFrance has arranged Visa information session in the month of December for students who are going for January to March intake. Also, many exchange students got scholarship from French Embassy in India, New Delhi.

CampusFrance India has arranged an admission tour in the first week of February (From 1st to 8th) in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. There are 15-20 Management and Engineering schools will be participating for one to one session and spot admission. Kindly visit our website for more info: www.inde.campusfrance.org

Going places and getting educated at varied and interesting socio-cultural backgrounds majorly contributes to dynamic learning. France stands in top list among European countries in terms of living environment. While pursuing my course work in National Institute of Technology, Surat, an active correspondence with a research group in France helped me gain a cutting edge over others. I was invited for an undergraduate summer internship for a period of three months as well as my final year thesis work for 6 months, by Laboratory for Photonics and Nanostructures, CNRS, Paris. It was a privilege to experience state-of-the-art facilities at work and living in Paris was a dream coming true afresh every day. Being a vegetarian was never imagined to be this simple in Europe, thanks to the growing acceptance from the French. Prior to all, proceedings of the internship were motivated and Visa application procedure was constantly guided by Campus France, while the funds for the summer internship as well as the thesis came from CNRS. Campus France stood as a consistent support even during my stay in France, guiding me through, clearance with the immigration office, procuring residence permit, dealings with bank-accounts, etc. all of which was much needed for a safe and joyful learning experience. I am planning to pursue research in France and I remain thankful to Campus France for helping me in boosting my confidence. My boundaries are now extended till France.

Do you know

The Alliance TEAM?

For this winter edition, let me introduce Raj Vakil (Administrator) and Bobby Christie (Accountant) from Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad.

Raj started working at AFA in 2008 as administrator and cultural coordinator - a huge task! With the fast growth of the AFA, in 2011 a separate post of cultural coordinator was created. Since that time, Mr. Vakil is the Administrator of the AFA. Raj learnt French for 3 years, starting in 2002, at Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad. Following which, he worked in a call center in direct contact with the upper management of a leading French company, improving his French considerably. Now his French is very fluent and impeccable! He has always had a keen interest in French language and culture, not only because of his admiration for Napoléon, but also because he used to travel in Europe as a singer, with Indian musicians and dancers to promote the Indian classical music. Raj is an incredible classical singer and holds a B.A. in Indian Classical Music. Because of his work and family life, he is unable to devote enough time to singing every day. However, as and when he finds time, he sings - especially for any big events in a temple in his vicinity.

Since he arrived at Alliance Française, Raj shares

his office with Bobby. Bobby is one of the oldest employees of Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad, working here since 2001! He started as an Office Administrator but quickly evolved as an Accountant. His task is enormous because he has to take care of all the accounts of AFA, including those of our branch in Baroda.

Everyday Bobby travels from Anand, always wearing a huge smile! He started to learn French after working with a French family and traveled in France twice with them. In 1999 he started studying at AFA to improve his French and get the diplomas. He then started working as an interpreter. During 2001, for example, he went to Bhuj to help the locals communicate with the Sapeur Pompier and the Sécurité Civile. He received a bronze medal and a certificate for his work as an interpreter. After that, he decided to join Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad to stay close to the French culture.

Both of them make a really good team, share a lot of light moments, and enjoy working together.
