Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services held its most successful annual gala to date on Saturday evening,

January 30. More than 800 guests were in attendance to confirm that Seven Acres is the “Greatest Show on Earth”. The circus themed gala, “Under the Big Top”, honored community leaders Karen and Buster Freedman with the Spirit of Life Award for their many years of service and support of Seven Acres and the Houston community. The event held at the Westin Galleria Houston included a cocktail hour where guests mingled with circus performers such as jugglers, magicians, and stilt walkers while they bid on fabulous gift items at the silent and Big Board auctions. Dinner and dancing to The Richard Brown Orchestra followed as well as the award presentations. The evening was chaired by Sandy and Lucky Burke and Andrea and David Stein. Honorary chairs were Jeri and Marc Shapiro and Bruce Stein. Dressed in red top hat and tails, TV news personality Courtney Zubowski Haas was emcee/circus ringmaster.

Seven Acres President Gary Swartz addressed the large crowd and thanked the honorary a n d e v e n t c h a i r s a s w e l l a s c o m m i t t e e chairs Michael Wiesenthal, Sandy Rubin, Judy Yambra, and Vicky and Michael Richker who put in so many hours to make the event a success. He also thanked Cindy and Dennis Laviage of C&D Scrap Metal generously donated the Fiat car for the raffle. “We are happy to see so many of you here with us this evening to support our Seven Acres ‘Under the Big Top’ gala. This annual event raises funds to help offset the difference between the cost to care for our residents and the funds that Texas Medicaid provides. Approximately 85% of our residents rely on inadequate Medicaid reimbursement which creates a shortfall each year. With your ongoing financial support we provide a safe and nurturing place for the frail elderly of our community who have no other place to go. I would like to thank our honorees, Karen and Buster Freedman, who have worked tirelessly o n this gala just as they have on all of our recent galas. They are both extraordinary supporters of Seven Acres and most deserving of the award that they will receive this evening!”

The honorees were presented their award by community leader and close friend Marc Shapiro. As Karen Freedman accepted the Spirit of Life

“Karen and Buster are motivated by family, friends, faith and service - their service is legendary. as anyone who has worked with Karen on a fundraiser or Buster at a board meeting would tell you – these folks are ‘down in the trenches’ workers. no detail is too small or task too menial. they are not in it for the glory but rather to get the job done.”

award she remarked, “Here we are Under the Big Top! What a spectacular evening!! For over fifteen years, we have attended the various Seven Acres events and witnessed so many remarkable community leaders and admired role models receive this prestigious Spirit of Life Award. It feels quite different this year looking, from up here, out on all of you…our family, friends and members of our community who tonight, are all generously supporting Seven Acres and its valuable work done every day. It is mind boggling to us, how

we can be receiving an award for doing something that brings such pleasure to our lives.”

Honoree Buster Freedman then stated, “Tonight, the Gala is not really about Karen and I, but the message and the story is about Seven Acres. Seven Acres is a facility we are proud of—giving care to those in need. The responsibility of Seven Acres is to not merely to add years to life, but more importantly, to add life to years. We will continue to honor our Fathers and Mothers by all of us working together, to support our first class facility.”

As we grow older, changes can occur in the eye just like the changes that can occur in rest of the body. The “big three” conditions most commonly found are cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

cataracts are cloudy lenses. Over time, the lens inside the eye “grows” like bark of a tree placing layer upon layer of new cells. Very slowly, over many months or years, the light that comes into the eye has a harder time going through the thickened, cloudy lens and focusing on the retina becomes harder. Things that were once crisp and clear gradually become more difficult to see. Also, smoking increases the rate of cataract formation and should be another reason to stop. Exits signs on freeways, street addresses, computer or sub-scripts on TV cam become more frustrating. This vision loss is the leading cause of treatable blindness. Cataract surgery is usually done as an outpatient requiring only a few hours in the hospital or out-patient facility. Local and intra-venous anesthetics are usually used resulting in a quicker procedure and making the recovery even easier open-angle Glaucoma is a condition where the pressure inside the eye is too high resulting in damage to the structures inside the eye. This results in decreased side vision and sometimes central vision too. In the United States, about 2% of those over the age of 40 have open-angle glaucoma which translates into about 2.2 million people. About half of those with glaucoma were unaware that they had the disease. There are usually no warning signs of the disease such as pain or redness to the eye and that is why this condition is often called the “Silent thief of sight”. The treatment of glaucoma is directed as decreasing the pressure inside the eye so damage is prevented, or, if there is damage present, it is stopped from getting worse. Unfortunately, damage that is present at the time of examination can rarely be reversed. The examination for glaucoma includes measurement of the vision, the side vision called visual field testing, the pressure inside the eye, the “drainage” area called the “angle” inside of the eye and very careful evaluation of the optic nerve. Once the diagnosis has been made, then treatment with drops are usually started. Lasers and surgery sometimes are also needed to control the pressure. age-related macular degeneration [AMD] is a leading cause of severe, irreversible vision loss with an estimated 1.75 million individuals over the age of 40 suffering from this disease. About 80% of the cases are “dry” macular degeneration and the remaining 20% are “wet”. There can be very subtle symptoms in the early stages but an examination by an ophthalmologist may detect these changes. Sometimes, high-dose nutritional supplements of antioxidants and zinc will help stabilize this condition. It is well known that cigarette smoking is an additional risk factor for developing AMD with the total number of years of smoking statistically increasing the likelihood and severity of this disease. Patients with wet AMD report a substantial decline in quality of life and increased need for assistance with activities of daily living as this disease worsens. As always, the best treatment is early detection by an ophthalmologist.

On Monday, January 25, the residents of The Medallion celebrated Israel’s national arbor day, Tu B’ Shevat. Seven Acres chaplain, Rabbi Mark Urkowitz, led a contemporary Tu B’ Shevat seder in the Medallion Oolam. Before the seder, caterer Jenny Tavor arrived bringing scrumptious sweet treats that were made with ingredients associated with the holiday.

“The Tu B’ Shevat seder, celebrating the New Year for trees, began with the Kabbalists in Safed, Israel in the 16th century,” Rabbi Urkowitz explained. “The holiday itself was originally focused on planting trees in Israel but today it is celebrated as a way to appreciate nature and confirm the responsibility that we have to care for our environment everywhere in the world. It is important for us to consider what type of world we will leave for the next generation.”

The seder was conducted in a similar way to a Passover seder with the reading of a “haggadah” that incorporates the four questions, four different cups of wine, and the eating of special foods, in this case, grapes, olive, nuts and dates. The service was split into four sections, each reflecting the seasons and symbolizing a different way that we relate to trees in our everyday lives.

Residents Doris Perlberg and Yolande Dauber assisted the Rabbi during the service as readers. Resident Shirley Cooper’s family, of the Houston Pecan Company, donated many of the dried fruits and nuts.

“On Tu B’Shevat we eat the seven species of the fruits of

the Land of Israel, remarked Ms. Tavor as she passed out her treats before the seder began. “The seven species are wheat, barley, olives, dates, grapes, figs and pomegranates. I tried to incorporate as many of the species as possible into the cookies and sweet muffins that I brought. I used olive oil, dates, pomegranate juice, wheat and barley flour, and raisins for grapes.”

Anyone who thinks that Yiddish is a dying language hasn’t visited The Medallion on a Thursday afternoon where a lively discussion takes place almost totally in Yiddish. While the program is called beginning Yiddish, that title is misleading. Facilitated by Rabbi Pincus Aloof, a full discussion generally takes place with a rare English word to be heard. Every week residents pack the library to hear and speak Yiddish and even those who think they have forgotten it are slowly picking it up again.

Rabbi Aloof leads the discussion on a variety of topics and

residents Learn a “Bissel” yiddish

members of the class ask and answer questions back to him in Yiddish. The class discussion runs from Jewish modern and Biblical History to Israeli politics.

“I have many interesting stories to tell my students in Yiddish - which is my mother tongue,” he remarked. “The residents who attend my weekly Yiddish class enjoy talking about their past and how it is related to the Yiddish they heard from their grand and great-grandparents. Through that, we get into many different subjects and questions that they have pertaining to Judaism and its customs.”

“the deli man” invites medallion residents to Lunch

One day last fall, “Deli Man” Ziggy Gruber came to the Seven Acres campus to show the movie that he stars in – “Deli Man”. At the time he remarked, “You know, there are older regular customers that stop coming to Kenny and Ziggy’s Deli and I wonder what happens to them, but I see that a number of them are here. I would love to host a customer appreciation luncheon for them in the Schmooze room”.

That visit resulted in an invitation to the residents of The

Medallion to come to Kenny and Ziggy’s for lunch. On February 9, seventeen residents and three staff members piled into the Seven Acres buses and mini vans and travelled to the Galleria area to enjoy real New York style deli food.

The residents were truly overwhelmed. When asked about the trip to Kenny and Ziggy’s, resident Hyman Grover remarked, “Ziggy’s generosity to the seniors of The Medallion was more than expected. We had a wonderful time.”

Resident Shirley Shoifet jokes about being born into a mixed marriage – one parent from Russia and one from Poland. Yiddish was the language of her household growing up,” she remarked. “I love Yiddish and Rabbi Aloof is wonderful.” Mamaloshen is truly alive and well at The Medallion!

Long time supporter of the Home, Bruce Stein, and his family hosted their annual party on Sunday, February 14th to deliver Valentine wishes to the residents of Seven Acres, The Medallion and their guests. The family was represented by Bruce Stein along with his sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Tracy Stein, Brad and Robin Stein and David and Andrea Stein. Bruce’s grandson Sam Stein also joined in the fun.

The event included a concert by the popular Gulf Coast Concert Band, with each resident receiving a special Valentine stuffed bear from a member of the Stein family. During the previous week, the Seven Acres Volunteer Auxiliary held its annual sale of balloons, candies, flowers, and stuffed animals for families and friends to purchase and have delivered to residents on Friday, February 12. The Valentine gifts were distributed to residents by volunteers Alisa and Oliver Max and staff from Seven Acres. All proceeds from this fund-raising project go directly to benefit programs for the residents.

alex deutser rodeo day celebrated with Go texan spirit

It was rodeo time in Houston and it’s time for the residents to get a little taste of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo right here at Seven Acres. This year’s Go Texan Party, Alex Deutser Rodeo Day, was sponsored for the second year by Punkin and Walter Hecht. “Our family loves walking into Seven Acres and seeing all the smiling faces complete with bandanas and cowboys hats!” Punkin Hecht told the crowd. “Who knew we had so many Yiddish cowboys and cowgirls here?” Walter Hecht added. “It does our hearts proud that

we can honor our beloved Dad, Alex Deutser, and see all the residents enjoying themselves.”

Musical entertainment was provided by country and western singer Jim Connors. He was followed by the Houston Square and Round Dance Council who performed a series of square dances and also invited guests from the audience on stage to learn to dance to “Cotton Eyed Joe”.

Rodeo Day hosts Walter and Punkin Hecht joins residents in saying “Howdy”. Everyone got into the rodeo spirit by wearing cowboy hats and western bandanas.

What do you do with the large number of floral arrangements from social events in the community that are trashed while there’s life still in them? If you are two seventh grade girls in the Houston area, you gather flower arrangements that have graced the tables at these major fund-raising events and deliver them to local charitable organizations to give them a “second life”.

Jordan Fein, a student at Kincaid school, and Lauren Gaston Elie, who attends Awty International School, have joined together with help from their moms to form “Flower Power Gives” a nonprofit dedicated to re-purposing flowers from charity events. Jordan’s mom is pediatric radiologist Kelli Cohen Fein and Lauren’s is Channel 13 anchor Gina Gaston Elie. Jordan’s grandmother, Celina Fein, is a resident of Seven Acres.

Jordan and Lauren want “Flower Power Gives” to deliver flowers to shelters and veteran’s and retirement communities. The fledgling organization has recently delivered flowers to Seven Acres as well as to the Michael E. DeBakey Veteran’s Hospital and Interfaith Ministries Meals on Wheels. Seven Acres received its first gift of flowers on a school day so moms Kelli Cohen Fein and Gina Gaston Elie made the delivery by themselves and enjoyed their time visiting with the residents. “Gina and I were deeply touched sharing the power of flowers with the residents and the staff,” remarked Ms. Fein, who is a past member of the Seven Acres Board of Trustees.

Standing, left to right: Gina Gaston Elie, Malcolm Slatko, Kelli Cohen Fein, and Sue Cororve. Seated is resident Ruth Wolpa.

The girls and their moms have the goal of expanding this project in the future. As the word gets out about their mission, they hope that more organizations will get on board and donate their flower arrangements. They have even come up with a tag line for their project - Flower Power Gives: Salvaging Flowers and Sharing Smiles.

Every week, Seven Acres and The Medallion residents look forward to a visit from Alice Glass who teaches a class in Zumba, one of the most popular activities offered to the residents. It encompasses active participation and residents of all abilities are able to join in, whether they dance in a wheelchair or are able to move from a standing position. Ms. Glass calls it the “Move-To-Movement” class.

The Zumba class begins with fast paced movement to lively rock and roll music, followed by a slower movement. Ms. Glass then picks up the pace one more time before going into a cool down and a strengthening exercise at the end. Her Zumba sessions usually bring in a full house and keeps everyone involved with hands waving in the air and feet in motion.

Zumba is part of the Ancillary Therapy program at Seven Acres and receives some of its funding through a grant from the 21st Century Foundation of the Houston Jewish Community Foundation (HJCF). Recently, members of the HJCF Grants

As we celebrate our 73rd year, we are asking you to help continue to provide the finest services and facilities for our elderly.

We must meet the increasing demands of higher costs and the ever growing needs of residents who are older, frailer, and in need of much

more financial assistance. The resident’s care needs are more specialized, more intense, more complicated and they are more compromised. The question remains: How do we provide the funding for the majority of our residents?

Through the years, Seven Acres has been able to meet its financial needs through the remarkable support of the community. Residents and their families have borne their share of costs so long as their resources allowed. Federal and state health care funding have not kept pace with inflationary costs, and still Seven Acres remains deeply committed to providing compassionate, professional care, regardless of the resident’s ability to pay. over 80% of our residents are so ill and indigent that they qualify for the state medicaid program, which under funds seven acres by $33,000 a year for each medicaid resident. this translates into a $8 million annual loss for the Home. It is only through the generous support of our friends and community partners that we are able to offset the significant cost of care that Medicaid does not cover.

Making sure we have a warm, protective environment for frail elderly today is like buying insurance that will benefit generations for years to come. As a non-profit agency, our community responsibility can only continue to be met through your philanthropic support.

Seven Acres is not just a facility, it truly is a campus of care and your Jewish Home. The 2016 Seven Acres Friends Campaign comes to a close on august 31, 2016. Please make your gift for the 2016 campaign in the enclosed donation envelope, or save a stamp and make your gift online at www.sevenacres.org. For more information call Seth Malin at 713-778-5781.

Committee Jodi Braham and Elyse Freed came to witness the Zumba class first-hand accompanied by Barb Bratter, VP of Planning and Allocations at the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston.

“We had such a good time dancing with Alice and the residents,” Elyse Freed added. “It was clear from the moment that the music started playing and we saw the smiles on everyone’s faces that we were supporting a truly worthwhile activity.”

Watching Alice Glass do Zumba with the residents makes it apparent that she is having as much fun as they are. “I cannot express the gratitude I feel when I am connecting with the residents during our ‘Move-To-Movement’ class!” Ms. Glass remarked. “I am so fortunate to witness that precious moment when I watch their eyes sparkle with joy while participating in our class.”

Alice Glass led a large group of residents in a rock ‘n’ roll zumba routine.

Permit No. 3506

http://www.houstonjewish.org/community/count-me-texas

The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston is conducting a Community Study during February and March. Calls will be made to thousands of households in greater Houston by professional callers. These calls will help us learn the number of Jewish people who live in our community and the neighborhoods in which they live, their religious affiliation

and observance, and what services and programs are most needed. When you see “Count Me Texas” on your caller ID, please answer the call and be counted. If you are busy, you may ask the caller to reschedule at a time more convenient for you. Your answers will provide insight and help shape the future of our vibrant and growing community. Questions?
