“Education and Service Go Hand in Hand” - Lou Lewis, z”lThe late Lou Lewis, a generous supporter of Seven Acres, believed that society achieves its highest goals through education and service. The Lou Lewis Memorial Fund, which also provides educational scholarships to nursing personnel in gerontology, was established by his wife Rosetta and sons Barry and Eugene Lewis to perpetuate this philosophy. Today, Barry Lewis and his wife, Barbara, continue his parents’ legacy by funding two major educational symposiums on gerontology through the Lewis Fund. In addition to the Lou Lewis Memorial Symposium for health care professionals, the fund now sponsors ElderAge Houston, an educational series for the community at large.

The Lou Lewis Memorial Symposium in Gerontology has been ongoing for twenty-seven years and is part of Seven Acres’ continuing commitment to provide educational leadership in the field of gerontology and care of the aged. The workshop is open to health care professionals and caregivers in the fields of nursing, nutrition, social work, and management and offers them continuing education credits.

On Tuesday, September 24, 2013 the Lewis Symposium drew over 200 participants and was entitled “Aging & Cognition…Building Skills for Healthcare Professionals”. The topic explored normal and pathological changes in memory, language and cognition in older adults.

Featured speaker was geriatric psychologist William Matteson, Ph.D. a consultant, accomplished speaker, and author who conducts training programs and case management consultation for the staffs of geropsychiatric hospitals, home health agencies, retirement homes, assisted living facilities, day treatment programs, skilled nursing facilities, and board and care homes.

In his presentation, Dr. Matteson centered on the need to find a medical cause for many of the behaviors seen in the elderly. “The most serious problem in brain aging is not memory loss; it’s cognition,” he began. “Aging causes memory and cognitive changes in all older adults. Many of these changes are normal, but others can be warning signs of serious medical disorders. It is important to begin with a complete and thorough physical work up to consider a medical cause before assigning a primary diagnosis.”

The morning program included a welcome from Barry Lewis, a past President of Seven Acres. “Seven Acres has the reputation as a great home for the aged and our family has been honored to be part of the symposium that it hosts every year,” he remarked. “What you do, as health care professionals, is to fulfill tikkun olam. Translated from Hebrew this means that you are repairing the world. Thank you for all that you do for our elderly.”

In the last two years, family members and caregivers whose lives are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other issues of aging have been able to get many of their questions answered at the ElderAge Houston lecture series. The second annual lecture series was held on three consecutive Tuesday evenings during the summer and was attended by over 800 people. The symposium was hosted by Seven Acres in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeast Texas as a free service to the community.

The first lecture featured Cristina Bocirnea, M.D., M.S., Associate Director in the Division of Geriatrics at UT Health and Dr. Rachelle S. Doody, M.D., Ph.D, Effie Marie Cain Chair in Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center at Baylor College of Medicine. The two leading medical experts on Alzheimer’s disease addressed the current treatment and some of the latest findings for all forms of dementia.

The second lecture was entitled Legal Affairs of Aging with speakers Wesley E. Wright of Wright Abshire Attorneys and Christina Lesher from the Law Office of Christina Lesher, PC. Both attorneys specialize in elder law and estate planning with an emphasis on planning for special needs, guardianships, Medicaid planning, and probate and estate administration.

The third and final lecture, Resident and Home Care Decisions, took place on August 6 and addressed decisions that families have to make about residential or home care for their elderly loved ones. Speakers were Malcolm P. Slatko, CEO of Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services, Julie Fenske, Executive Director of The Buckingham Senior Retirement Community, and Annette Horsch, M.S.W., President of Aging Options.

When Leonard Tatar was hospitalized and had surgery this past summer, he learned that he would need to undergo rehabilitation in a skilled care facility before he could return home. “There was no question in my mind where I would want to go for rehab. I have been a supporter of the Home for many years, as was my father before me. His brother, my uncle, was a resident for many years. The Home has always been dear to us because of our life experiences.”

Tatar has served on Seven Acres Board of Trustees since 1976 and was on the board when the Home first made the move to the Seven Acres campus. “All of these years I have viewed Seven Acres as an outsider, someone who volunteers his time and energy to the residents, but never thought I would experience it as a resident myself. It is a totally different experience when you eat, sleep and are cared for there. As a resident I got to interact directly with the staff and discovered that both the the Seven Acres nursing staff and the rehabilitation staff have unlimited love and caring for the residents. It really was an education to see first-hand the incredible work that my Dad and I have supported for so many years.”

Tatar’s family is also thrilled with his quick recovery. His wife, Millie, also has a long history with Seven Acres having served as Director of Development for eighteen years. “After working with residents, family members, volunteers and staff for so many years in a professional capacity, having my own family member at Seven Acres was a totally unique experience,” she remarked. “The staff was so attentive and professional that Lenny progressed quickly. Seven Acres has always been close to our hearts and this experience just reinforced that feeling.”

“I am back at home, getting back into my routine and getting on with my life,” added Tatar. “Millie and I are so grateful for the care that I got at Seven Acres.”

Seven Acres Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Program Gets Residents Back on Their Feet

The Residents Club of Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services was founded seventy years ago for the purpose of providing information to all residents regarding the operation of Seven Acres and to develop procedures that enable the residents to participate in making decisions with the staff which affect their interests, lifestyle and well-being. The club also raises funds for charities as designated by the residents, performs good deeds and provides volunteer services to the community. The organization serves as the governing committee for its residents and insures that they have a democratic voice in decisions about care, activities and quality of life at Seven Acres.

New officers for the 2013-2014 year are: President, Meyer Lewis; Fundraising Vice Presidents, Leah Cohn and Helen Bender; Residents’ Services Vice President, Camille Caltagirone; Treasurer, Gerald Jacobson; Recording Secretary, Elaine Spiegelman; Corresponding Secretary, Roberta Lambert.

The Medallion Assisted Living Residence also has a democratically elected governing body called the Residents Council. The Council recently held its annual election and installation of officers. Officers for 2013-2014 are: President, Rae Sampson; Vice President, Marcene Goldman; Treasurer, Norma Morgenstern; Recording Secretary, Alfreda Lake; and Corresponding Secretary, Aron Manela.

Seven Acres and The Medallion Residents Usher in 5774The Jewish High Holidays and the Fall festivals were a busy time on the Pauline Sterne Wolff campus as the holidays followed right behind the Labor Day weekend. Services for the High Holidays were held in both the Miller/Kaplan Chapel at Seven Acres and The Medallion Oolam activity room.

For over thirty-five years, volunteer Lou Solomon has led the campus Reform services that moved to The Medallion when it opened in 2006. Solomon is semi-retiring from his volunteer position this year but will continue to help out at services. In his honor, his family surprised him with a gift to the campus, naming the activity room the “Lou Solomon Synagogue.”

This year, residents who were unable to attend services in either of the synagogues on the campus had a new way to worship. A Wi-Fi system was set up on the units and services were streamed onto the big screen TV’s. Services from Congretgation Beth Yeshurun were streamed over the internet to the Cohen Unit while Congregations Beth Israel services were streamed upstairs to the Miller Unit.

During the time between the two High Holidays, residents had the opportunity to visit the Jewish cemeteries around Houston to say a special prayer for their departed loved ones. Seven Acres Chaplain

Beth Yeshurun Day School Fourth Grader Aaron Stein and Rabbi Moshe Traxler from Chabad Outreach blew their shofrot in unison for The Medallion residents.

Hazzan Meir Finkelstein from Congregation Beth Yeshurun brought his wife Monica and daughter Emily to sing music for the High Holidays. To his left is Seven Acres resident Bertie Hart.

Cantor Daniel Mutlu and piano accompanist Dr. Thomas Crow (standing) entertained the residents with Jewish High Holiday music. The Medallion residents Lissa Streusand and Ida Wadler enjoyed the short concert.

Rabbi Steven Morgen from Beth Yeshurun joined The Medallion residents for their sukkot luncheon. He helped resident Faye Kotin shake the lulav and etrog and say the blessing.

Seven Acres and The Medallion Residents Usher in 5774Rabbi Mark Urkowitz traveled on the Seven Acres bus to all the cemeteries with residents from both Seven Acres and The Medallion on board. Those who were able to get off the bus walked to the grave-site and read a prayer with the Rabbi. Residents who could not get off were helped to read the prayer from the bus as they watched the rabbi say the prayer for them at the grave site.

The celebration of Sukkot has been a Seven Acres tradition for over seventy years, with the auditorium and the beautiful Seven Acres Sukkah decorated with colorful fruits, vegetables, and palm fronds. The holiday has also become a time to thank those who organize and run the religious services throughout the year. The annual Seven Acres Sukkot luncheon welcomes the religious committee volunteers and those residents who regularly participate in services to fulfill the mitzvah of sharing a Sukkot meal. At The Medallion, residents also had the opportunity to enjoy their own beautiful Sukkot luncheon.

During Sukkot, the Stein family continued their tradition of hosting an annual Sukkot party for the residents. With musical entertainment provided by the Kosher Klezmer Band, a packed auditorium of residents and their guests shook maracas and clapped along to Klezmer, Yiddish, Ladino and Hebrew favorites such as “Tum Balalaika”, “Mayyim”, and “Hava Nagilah”.

the department as a part-time volunteer, Dr. Eichberg has served as President of Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services and is currently the President of the Houston Jewish Geriatric Foundation. A resident of Houston since 1975, he recently retired as professor of biology and biochemistry at the University of Houston, where, for 35 years, he gained extensive experience in grant writing.

“Joe has brought tremendous expertise to our mission, and I cannot think of anyone more qualified to take our fund development activities to the next level,” remarked Malcolm Slatko.

Dr. Joseph Eichberg Joins Seven Acres’ Fund Development Staff

Dr. Joseph Eichberg

“I am very excited a b o u t w o r k i n g w i t h M a l c o l m and Development D i r e c t o r S e t h Malin, together with their staff and committees, to raise funds to secure the financial viability of Seven Acres now

and in the future. Additional funding will be imperative if Seven Acres is to continue providing the appropriate level of care and life to those on our campus and in the community,” Dr. Eichberg stated.

Gary Swartz added, “Last year, Seven Acres provided over $7 million of charitable care to the community because of Medicaid under-funding. As health care inflation continues to outpace the general economy and government reimbursement, this gap will continue to be of critical concern for the care of the indigent elderly and disabled of our community. We all welcome Joe to our Seven Acres volunteer family.”
