Treatment for End-Stage Kidney FailureKidney Transplant or Dialysis Therapy
HaemodialysisA dialysis machine filters the blood and then infuses it back into the body through a vein in the patient's arm.
Peritoneal dialysis(Water dialysis) A permanent tube is surgically inserted into the stomach to pump and drain 2 litres of special solution into the body.
There are 2 types of dialysis. 1 2
3X a week, 4-hours a session
Dialysis done at center or home
Treatment done at home everyday
4X a day
Shorter waiting time for a kidney compared to wait list for cadaveric donor (non-living donor)
Better survival outcomes
Flexibility in scheduling the transplant date
Only a Small Percentage of kidney failure patients undergo transplantation due to a few reasons:
5 years mortalitywhile on dialysis is about
30 to 40%
Cardiovascular complications
Pre-morbid conditions such as Diabetes
Mainly due to serious health problems that may arise from dialysis such as:
Lack of donors
Blood group incompatibility
Lack of experienced doctors
Cultural beliefs
Benefits of Kidney Transplantation: - Good survival outcome (90% or more do well post-transplant)- Better quality of life, free from dialysis- Female patients can plan for babies
Benefits of Living Donor Transplant
Transplant vs Dialysis
ABO Incompatible Transplantsare now possible with latest advances in medical and quality care. Patients do not need to have blood group compatible living donors.
It is possible to do an emotionally related kidney transplant in Singapore. This means that it is legal for non-family members, such as friends, to donate their kidney to people they love.
