Trends and Expectations in PackagingFilms and Functional Polymer Films,

a KROENERT Viewpoint

Barrier layers are applied to packaging films, to protect the packed product against

environmental influences. Besides that, the barrier layer also works as a sealing layer to combine different materials with each other, such as food box with a top cover.

Environmental influences can be moisture and oxygen as well as viruses, bacteria and infectious substances. ‘Smart-packaging’ materials, which mean resource efficient products that are focusing on efficient material use as well as materials with a better CO2 footprint are gaining importance, mainly in China and India. Reducing wastage of food is an important target to achieve worldwide.

KROENERT, as supplier of custom-made machines, on one side handles more and more thinner substrates for coating machines; while on the other, designs for the application of functional layers as well. These layers can be, for instance, protective layers as well as printing primers for transparent barriers with aluminium oxide (so called AlOx layers) and functional barrier layers like PVdC (Polyvinylidene chloride).

Even for barrier layers, PVdC is currently dominating the market. Transparent barrier layers with high barrier properties are gaining importance. Aluminium oxide (AlOx) clear barrier coating has become one of the favoured choices for flexible

packaging and commonly used. However, the t r a n s p a r e n t ceramic barrier layers need to be protected as well as coated with a primer layer for printing applications.High-end R2R coating machine.

Recycling of cast and extruded films like BOPP, BOPET or BOPA

has been an integral part of the film producing plant here in India since early ’90s and plays a very pivotal role in the film production.

It is encouraging to see momentum catching up in the recycling of blown polyolefin films (PE, PP and its laminates), just as being practiced in advanced countries. And why not, after all inhouse waste is a valuable resource with rising production costs and fluctuating polymer prices.

Producers of polyethylene blown films, especially with large annual production capacity, consider ‘recycling’ as an extremely important factor. Reinhard Händel of Polyfilm, Europe, says, “If you work properly with recycling materials instead of virgin, you can save around 30% for every tonne of material processed and that corresponds to roughly Euro 300 to 500.”

When recycled gently and correctly, the quality of recycled granules comes near to virgin, thus a

very viable proposition.

The blown film production line ideally comprises of an inline edge trim recycling plant working round the shifts and offline recycling system for loose films or film on rolls. There are companies operating recycling facilities 24/7, just like the biaxial film plants. The film and recycling plants have something else too in common; both have to cope with regular changes in line with the film producer’s product portfolio, which at times is extremely wide-ranging, for example, technical films, packaging films, construction and agricultural films and stretch films produced in cast or blown film extrusion processes.

The recycling systems with a preconditioning or material preparation unit guarantee a very stable process and are ideal for even very thin films. It ensures minimal oxidation and thermal degradation, especially for sensitive materials like PP.

Available variants are unvented extruders for non-printed, vented extruders for slightly printed and specially designed extruders for heavily printed film scrap. When recycled gently and correctly, the quality of recycled granules comes near to virgin, thus a very viable proposition.

Plastic products such as liner, chain guide, bearing bush or a gear are not necessarily

better just because they made from plastics. The question whether it is superior in all respects to the same part made from a different material is decided by its processing technique. Or more precisely: by the supplier’s know-how in the art of plastic production and their skill in manufacturing components.

The company’s special processing technology guarantees the homogeneity and unwavering high quality of its products and makes it extra ordinarily wear resistant and stress free.

The product range include:l UHMWPE sheets of size: 2000 x

Most pipeline projects require pipe to be cut into short lengths at valves, fittings, manholes or other similar

locations. Although installers have been cutting pipe successfully for many years, this article provides the PVC Pipe Association’s cutting recommendations.

Safety

Worker safety is the most important consideration for the cutting of any pipe material. It is important to follow all safety recommendations of equipment manufacturers and to ensure that work proceeds in a controlled manner. Special care should be taken to ensure that the saw kerf remains open to prevent the saw blade from binding.

Why is a Good Cut Necessary?

A straight and smooth spigot end will prevent problems in the field:l A crooked cut may not allow the spigot to

properly engage the bell’s gasket, resulting in leakage.

l A jagged cut may cause damage to the gasket when the spigot is inserted into the pipe’s bell, again causing leakage.

l In both cases, the result will be a costly, time-consuming repair.

Cut Requirements

To make an acceptable cut for PVC pipe:l The cut must be perpendicular to the pipe

length.l The cut must be straight all the way around

the pipe circumference.l The outer edge of the cut end of the pipe

must be beveled properly.

How to Make a Straight Cut

The steps necessary for making a straight cut are:l Place the pipe on level ground.l Provide adequate support to keep the pipe

from moving during the cutting procedure.l Measure to the location where the pipe will

be cut.l Draw a line all the way around the pipe

circumference, making sure that the correct measurement is maintained.

l Using a saw and a saw blade intended for PVC pipe, safely and carefully cut the pipe along the marked line.

Cutting Large-Diameter Pipe

PVC pipe is now available in sizes up to 60-inch for both pressure and gravity applications. Large-

diameter pipe’s combination of size, heavy weight and thick wall means that cutting techniques that have been used for smaller pipe may no longer be safe or efficient. The following considerations become even more important:l Pipe movement: It is necessary to roll a pipe

to cut it all the way around its circumference. However, uncontrolled pipe movement should be prevented for safety reasons.

l Saw kerf: Proper support of the pipe being cut is necessary to prevent the saw kerf from closing (binding the saw blade) or opening (potentially cracking the pipe).

l Equipment: PVC pipe can be cut with a power saw using an abrasive disc. For larger sizes of pipe, other cutting tools may be appropriate.

Cutting of Already-Installed Pipe

If a cut is required within 24 inches of a metallic joint restraint device (one that uses serrated teeth to grip the pipe), the device should be loosened prior to the cut. After the pipe is cut, the device’s bolts should be re-tightened to the manufacturer’s recommended values using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures.

Field Cutting of PVC Pipes

Lead-based stabilisers have been used for over 70 years for PVC extrusion. The European PVC industry successfully eliminated use of lead stabilisers through the ‘Vinyl-2010’ initiative by the end of 2015. Now-a-days

in Europe, Ca-Zn-based and organic-based stabilisers are used for PVC extrusion. Sn-stabilisers play a minor role, mostly for transparent applications.

An optimised Ca-Zn one-pack contains a synergistic system of between 20 - 25 different components, whereas lead one-pack contains only 5 - 12 components. A lot of requirements from PVC product manufacturers, like plate out elimination, high output rates,

cost-efficient products, good initial colour, good gloss, broad processing windows, weathering performance etc. is a big challenge for an efficient stabiliser design and needs a lot of experience. IKA with its 30 years of experience in innovating solutions have developed Ca-Zn stabilisers and organic stabilisers which are now being made available through a tie-up with POCL Enterprises Ltd. (POEL), India for their customers.

With over 30 years of innovation and development experience, highly automated and precision production equipment, IKA provides consistent, high-quality products making it the ideal partner for technical support and supplying stabilisers for a successful change from lead-based towards lead-free stabilisation for PVC compounding and processing applications.

Exhibitors’ Award Winners List

“We have been looking for

injection moulding plants

and through PLASTINDIA,

we’ve come across a number

of suppliers and exhibitors. It

provided us for a one-to-one

interaction and we could easily

escape going from one city to

another. Various products at

different range of prices helped

us organise our choices and

requirements. A well-organised

exhibition, must say!”
