Transition Newsletter For Parents & Students
2nd Quarter 2015 *Indicates information for students with disabilities
These newsletters are designed to inform students and their parents of programs and services available at Kaimuki High School
that can help our students do well while in high school and prepare them for a smooth and successful transition after graduation.
Information about resources and opportunities available in the community will also be included.
PSAT – Wednesday, October 14th Report to Library at 7:45 am
Students who signed up to take the PSAT are to report to the library by 7:45 am on Wednesday, October 14th. The test will
begin promptly at 8:00 am. Bring a jacket or sweater – it gets cold in the library. Eat a good breakfast that morning
before coming to school that day.
Winter Sports Tryouts Listen to morning announcements for tryout dates and times for the following winter sports and
where to report: Soccer, Swimming, Wrestling, Basketball, JV Baseball, and Paddling. Start getting your forms and physicals if you plan on participating and
remember to keep your grades up. A grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 is required for participation in all OIA sports.
If you have questions, see Mr. Fred Lee, our school’s athletic director. His office is located by the swimming pool (same side as boys’ locker room).
CLASS OF 2016: October 21st & 29th Order Your Graduation Cap & Gown
Graduation cap and gown ordering packets will be distributed upon your return from fall break. Seniors will have a chance to pay for their
cap & gown, class ring, graduation invitations/announcements, and other accessories on Wednesday, Oct. 21st & 29th during lunchtime in
the CCTC. The cost of a cap & gown is $51.31 until Nov. 30th . After that, a $20-$40 late charge will be added.
Tuesday, October 27, 2015
8:30 am – 11:30 am and 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Hawaii Convention Center Over 160 colleges from all over the state and mainland will be at the Honolulu National College
Fair at the Hawaii Convention Center. The military, trade schools, and agencies providing financial aid and scholarships to seniors will also be there. An evening session is scheduled for
students and parents to attend when more individual attention is available. Great time to pick up information and brochures and to meet representatives from these colleges.
Come to the CCTC to pick up a permission form to attend this field trip. Priority will be given to seniors and juniors but anyone can attend.
ASVAB Test – Thursday, Oct. 29th Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Students can sign up to take the ASVAB on October 29th. The test will be administered by the military in the auditorium. Students interested in joining the military must score well on the ASVAB. You can start taking the ASVAB from your sophomore year and retake the ASVAB each year to try to get a higher score. If you want to take the test, stop by the CCTC and pick up a permission form. Taking the ASVAB does
not mean you will be enlisting in the military. But an aptitude test can be a very
helpful tool to discover what types of careers you might be best suited for.

Project Grad Registration Project Graduation is like a fantastic surprise Graduation Party! After graduates have had time to greet and meet their family and friends at Waikiki Shell, they will be transported from the Shell for dinner and entertainment planned by the Project Grad committee. Project Graduation is drug-free and alcohol-free! We want to make our seniors’ last night, a safe and fun time to remember. Cost is $175 until March 15th. Price will increase to $200 after March 15th. Turn in your registration form and fee to Mr. Schemel in the CCTC.
The Honolulu District is proud to present our annual series of Monthly Parent
Informational Sessions. Parents/Guardians will have the opportunity to
participate in parent sessions that will support the emotional, behavioral and
educational development of their children. School and parent partnerships
increase the opportunities for our students to succeed educationally and become
independent, college & career ready upon graduation.
Below is a listing of sessions that are scheduled for this school year. Please
make plans to attend all the sessions that you are interested in. Flyers will be
sent out for each monthly session through your child’s school. We look forward
to meeting you!
College Career Transition Center (CCTC) Mr. Tom Schemel, our post-high school counselor, updates our school’s website with current information about college representatives coming to visit Kaimuki High School and scholarship opportunities & deadlines. Seniors should also check their emails each week for announcements about upcoming events. Parents are also encouraged to keep connected to assist their children in taking advantage of the many resources and opportunities available to our students. Just email Mr. Schemel
and he will add you to his contact list. When your child gets an email announcement, so will you! Contact Mr. Schemel at: [email protected]. If you do not have internet access, seniors are advised to drop in and visit the CCTC regularly to check on new scholarship postings, college visitations and presentations.
Preparing for the COMPASS Test The COMPASS is a computer-based test. You can access a calculator on
the computer and you will be given scratch paper to work out your math problems. Take your time – this is not a timed test. The computer will determine whether to give you more difficult questions and when to stop the test. Here are a list of websites that provide practice questions
that you might encounter on the COMPASS Test. The CCTC also has COMPASS study guides available for students to borrow.

Completing the UH Common Application Help Provided on October 28 & 29 All seniors who plan on attending one of the 7 community colleges or the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hilo, or West Oahu need to apply on-line at: hawaii.edu.
It is VERY important for you to complete the application
correctly the first time to prevent problems in the future. Have
all info ready at the time you go on-line. Once you complete a
section, it’s hard or, sometimes, impossible to go back and correct or change it. ALL SENIORS are encouraged to come to the library after school on Oct. 28 & 29 to get
assistance from UH staff to complete the UH common application. See Mr. Schemel in
the CCTC for more information.
Applying to a community college is free! Application fee to UH Manoa, UH Hilo and UH West Oahu is free if you qualify for a waiver. Otherwise, applying to UH Manoa costs $70 (non-refundable) See Mr. Schemel in the CCTC if you think you are eligible for a waiver. Know which college campus you want to attend by reviewing the college majors from the lists provided on the next couple pages.

College Opportunities Program (COP) University of Hawaii at Manoa
Some of our students want to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa after high school. However, to be
accepted at UH-Manoa, students need to meet certain UH requirements: (SAT scores of 510-510-510, Algebra II, GPA 2.8). The College Opportunities Program allows students
who do not meet these requirements an opportunity to attend UH-Manoa. Students (and parents) must complete an application form and students must get letters of
recommendations from their teachers. A personal essay is also required. Students from across the state will be selected. Students must then pass a 6-week summer program. Expenses are paid during the summer program, including room and board. If a student passes the summer program, he/she is then
admitted to the University of Hawaii-Manoa! The COP staff continues to provide support to COP students while attending UH.
For on-line application and deadline and for more information, go to: http://www.hawaii.edu/cop/students/apply.php
Deadline to apply is in early December 2015 (date TBA)
Check with Mr. Schemel, if interested.
Scholarship Websites for Hawaiian Students Students of Hawaiian ancestry have additional scholarship resources available to them. Check out these organizations on-line to see if they have posted their scholarship applications. Make sure you can meet the additional requirements of each of the organizations, including documentation of Hawaiian ancestry. Get things in order now!
