THE FURZEDOWN FESTIVAL 2005Why do we have the Furzedown Festival? How did it all begin?

It is not uncommon to find a community as ‘village-like’ in London as Furzedown. TheFestival grew out of a desire to nurture and develop this unusual and friendly community.

Financed partly by the fund-raising efforts of the Furzedown Community Network (FCN)and partly by a grant from Wandsworth Council’s ‘Arts About Wandsworth’ scheme, theannual Furzedown Festival is now in its fifth year.

Literally dozens of people from local schools, businesses, churches and faith groups, theFamily Centre, the Furzedown Project and the Furzedown Youth Centre as well asenthusiastic individuals of all ages and backgrounds, now contribute to the packedprogramme of events in one way or another. Some offer financial assistance, others providevenues or organise events. A small Festival Planning Group co-ordinates the final Programme.

This year we have aimed to provide a range of events which offers something foreveryone living in Furzedown. There are events for children and families, for the pub-goer, for teenagers, and for everyone interested in health, gardening, religion, politics, history, natural history, art and music.

However, if you look at the programme and think ‘but there’s nothing for me,’ please let usknow. Perhaps your suggestions could provide the idea for a new event next year. And it is stillnot too late to get more involved this year. Contact me for more information.

OUR 2005 FESTIVAL THEME: ‘FUTURE FURZEDOWN’This year our ‘Future Furzedown’ theme was chosen to emphasise how important it isto be active in developing a sense of community in the area we live. With this in mindmany of the Festival events will be asking for small voluntary contributions for two localorganisations – the Furzedown Project, which provides excellent support to olderpeople in the area, and the Furzedown Youth Centre at St. James’ Church, which isdeveloping into a really popular local venue for young people in the area. We also wantto emphasise our connections with the rest of the world and so some events will be raisingmoney for the national ‘Make Poverty History’ campaign, aimed at eradicatingpoverty around the world. (See: www.makepovertyhistory.org for more information).

Our special thanks to Wandsworth Council and several local businesses for providingexceptional financial and/or practical support to the Furzedown Festival 2005:
