NASA MAKES EXCEPTION IN POLICY TO HIRE AN INDIAN

When foreigners are offered a permanent job at NASA, the condition is that they should apply for and get a US Citizenship. Arun P.V., who hails from Manimala in Kerala, got an invitation from the American space research centre NASA to work as scientist there. He had completed his M.Tech from Bhopal NIT and after a stint at the renowned Bhabha Atomic Research Centre; he completed a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While at the MIT, NASA extended the invitation. Arun joined work on a fixed term contract. His exceptional calibre and genius led to an offer of a permanent position at NASA.

All other candidates who were invited by NASA for a permanent position, accepted US Citizenship, and joined NASA. However, Arun was adamant that he would not give up his Indian Citizenship for the job. His stand was that if that was the condition, he was more than willing to forego the offer from NASA. He informed NASA that he was willing to quit and return to India if his condition was not acceptable by NASA.

NASA and the US Government must have been very impressed by his patriotism as well as his scientific calibre from what happened afterwards. Arun, a very junior scientist, was included in a high level science and technology co-operation delegation

from the US to India that arrived two weeks ago. It was renowned computer scientist Dr Barbara Liskov, who was also on the delegation, who informed Home minister Rajnath Singh about the courageously patriotic stand that Arun had taken.

Rajnath Singh updated PM Narendra Modi about this, and the PM invited Arun to his official residence for a half hour chat. He told Arun that the doors to the Indian Space research programme will forever be open to him.

We salute the patriotism of this True Indian.

Hats off to you, Arun!

In 1879, when the British were ruling India, Lt. Col. Martin of Agar Malva was leading the army in the war against Afghanistan.

Col. Martin used to regularly send messages of his well-being to his wife. The war continued for long Lady Martin stopped getting messages. She was very upset.Once riding on her horse, she passed by the temple of Baijnath Mahadev. She was attracted by the sound of Conch Mantra. She went inside and came to know that the Brahmanas were worshipping Lord Shiva. They saw her sad face and asked her problem. She explained everything to them. They told her that Lord Shiva listens to the prayers of devotees and takes them out of difficult situations in no time. With the advice of the Brahmanas she started the ‘Laghurudri Anushtthan’ of the Mantra:‘Om Namah Shivaya’ for 11 days. She prayed to Lord Shiva that if her husband reaches home safely, then she would get the temple renovated. On the last of the ‘Laghurudri’ a messenger came and gave a letter to her. Her husband had written: ‘I was regularly sending messages to you from the battle grounds but suddenly the Pathans surrounded us from all sides. We were entrapped in a situation where there was no scope of escaping death. Suddenly I saw a Yogi of India with long hair, carrying a weapon with three pointers (Trishul). His personality was amazing and he was maneuvering his weapon with a magnificent style. Seeing this great man, the Pathans started running back. With his grace our bad times turned into moments of victory. This was possible only because of that man of India wearing a lion skin carrying a three-pointer weapon (Trishul). That great Yogi told me that I should not worry and that he had come to rescue me because he was very pleased with my wife’s prayers.’Tears of joy were falling down Lady Martin’s eyes while reading the letter. Her heart was overwhelmed. She fell into the feet of Lord Shiva’s statue and burst in tears. After a few weeks Col. Martin returned. Lady Martin narrated the whole incident to him. Now both husband wife became devotees of Lord Shiva. In 1883 they donated Rs. 15,000 for renovating the temple. The information engraved slab for the same is still there in the Baijnath Mahadev Temple of Agar Malva. This is the only Hindu temple built by a Britisher.

Educational institutions such as Universities, colleges, research and development institutions, schools have always needed to keep communication lines open with their key constituents and shareholders and other stakeholders such as students, faculty/academics, government and/or private funders and promoters. Engagement with these constituents and especially students is the key to operational running and success of any educational institution. Historically, as far as students were concerned, administrators, educators, teachers and professors have addressed queries, issues and doubts of students face-to-face and almost always in person or through physically stationed bulletin boards on campuses. However, over time and with availability and adoption of prevalent technologies, administrators and faculty have adjusted to communicating with students through email and also through outreach programs to parents, funders/ promoters, district and area politicians, education policy makers and mandarins, alumni networks. But it is the recent advent, rapid proliferation and adoption of ubiquitous computing - and primarily by students-in the form of inexpensive laptops, smartphones, tablets, portable and other hand-held devices coupled with near ubiquitous Web connectivity that has changed the dynamics of interaction and engagement. This has been accelerated even further with the emergence of social media and allied social network-centered platforms in recent years. Wikis, Weblogs, social bookmarking, RSS feeds, social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace), podcasts, e-portfolios, del.icio. us, YouTube, Skype, flickr, online office and tagging other networks and applications with one-to-one, one-to-many and multi- way engagement amenability has made communication and interaction much quicker than ever before.Social media is the apparently changing nature of learners' relationships with information and knowledge. Indeed, it could be argued that social media support forms of knowledge consumption and knowledge construction that are very different to the epistemological principles of formal education and individualized instructional Social media and all its extended platforms and technologies have become integral to the lives of students. The millennial generation cohort is absolutely comfortable with all aspects of technology usage in their personal lives and slowly expecting academics and educators to adopt social media for academic use and thereby enable a more dynamic educative environment. Even as administrators are still grappling with the essence and frameworks of adopting a digital strategy for their institutions and channelize the opportunities that exist for digital learning through such social media loops and webs, blogging, online forums and Twitter accounts have been embraced by educators, teachers, professors and academicians as well in recent years. One of the biggest benefits of social media and social networks is the instantaneous sharing and dissemination of information. The possibilities and potentialities for information sharing and collaboration and groupsourcing

and crowdsourcing are plenty. Educators can take advantage of trusted networks to engage students and help them learn important skills and concepts. They can post relevant documents, links to books or articles on student networks which will enhance pupil interest in the subject and the likelihood that they will view and trust that material. That type of collaboration is a vital new part of the educational process.Anthropological professors or researchers involved in field work can quickly upload videos and post photos of initial findings of new archaeological digs and preliminary investigation field expeditions on commonly accessed networks. Faculty and researchers of medical colleges involved in government -funded research projects and programs can confabulate regularly via workgroups on Facebook or Google + or other online collaboration workgroups and boards.Literature professors can quickly share newest and interesting article links thru Twitter or posts and updates of their current commentaries and essays through institution blogs. Astronomy and space sciences professors can group source the learnings of the vast observational field of astronomy and space through external experts and practitioners via online platforms to ensure broad-based and enriching learning for students. Urgent announcements and up-to-date information related to security updates, institution closures, and weather-related issues can be quickly made on the institution's Twitter account before breakdown of full communication systems and networks.Educational institutions are still in the initial and/or nascent stages of adoption of social media platforms and technologies. The approaches to introduce social media in academics and learning in classrooms and as a communication/ PR tool or for outreach programs are still being shaped with very few best practices really available for pointers and most institutions are learning-as-they-go. The co-ordination and coalescing of such activities and initiatives and the uniformity in approach will be the key to maintaining and enhancing an institution's reputation.New technologies are also affecting other areas of administration of educational institutions. Social-networking tools are helping to build connections with alumni and supportcareer service activities. These tools can help in expanding the reach and success of recruiting through automated, self-service programmes, which reduce administrative requirements, streamline course registration and enhance academic life™.Without a doubt, there will be challenges to implementing these technologies in the classroom. Even the most

[4]fundamental, non-tech lessons have their hiccups .The challenge essentially is to set up frameworks and policy guidelines which help govern the use and on-the-go adoption of social media. Tech savvy teachers and professors and those pioneers in use of social media tools should be co-opted as part of such policy making teams so that constructive and workable strategies are devised. Administrators will need to gauge how to use social media effectively, how to incorporate the plethora of social media

tools for learning and/or craft or tailor education services and products and how to use social media platforms for increasing and expanding professional learning networks and out-of-classroom activities.

A Toolkit for Social Media AdoptionA d m i n i s t ra t o r s a n d / o r e d u c a t i o n i n s t i t u t i o n heads/regents/principals should prepare a broad framework and outline policy guidelines for an education institution's social media adoption strategy.• The framework should be flexible to account for quick-

changing technologies, emergence of new platforms and tools to leverage the potential and reach of social media.

• Administrators should co-opt educators, teachers and professors conversant with prevalent technologies and tools and also include the tech-savvy and whizzesamong students into the policy team to ensure commonality of purpose and help frame institution social media objectives.

• Ensure deployment of full-time staff including students and academicians to manage institution-owned and managed social media properties including Websites, blogs, videos and maintain current and up-to-date nature of information feeds. Empower in-house team to also co-ordinate with external Web administrators, architects and hosting providers to ensure a seamless and intuitive technological interface and redundancy and glitch-free social media experience.

• Discussion pages in Facebook pages, urls links and hash tags on Twitter, videos and video blogs on YouTube need to have a consistency in approach so as to not deviate from the known "reputational character" of the educational institution.

• Leverage the ubiquity of social media to position public relations and outreach programs to all stakeholders of the educational institution.

Use of social media tools, platforms, networks and services in education will be even more ubiquitous in the future. It would behoove educators, administrators, educational institutions heads and academicians to come to terms and up-to-speed with these new-age and necessarily 21st century skills and capabilities to prepare students so that they are as primed to be reliable and well-attuned global

citizens of tomorrow.
