Pre-Interview Assignment

The pre-interview assignment is an important factor in considering an application. As the TESOL Plus (and the CELTA component in particular) is an intensive course of study, candidates need to be prepared for the demands of the course and show that they have some ability to:

research language structures

show awareness of language learning from a student’s perspective

identify errors in grammar and vocabulary

correctly identify some features of pronunciation

reflect on effective teaching and learning strategies and environments

To help you please refer to a grammar book such as “Practical English Usage” by Michael Swan (Oxford

University Press) or any other grammar reference book you might have at home or find in the library/book

store. The internet is also a great source of information. If you’re looking for a site, try:

http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/index2.htm

http://www.englishgrammarsecrets.com/

Please make sure you proof-read your work carefully as the TESOL Plus program requires a high level of

accuracy in written English.

Interview* *Only applicants who are successful in the pre-interview assignment will be required to participate in aninterview.

The next step of the application process is an in-person or telephone /skype interview. This gives us an opportunity to get to know you better, discuss your pre-interview answers and ask a few more probing questions to get a better understanding of your language analysis abilities, insight into teaching and learning and your ability to identify learner errors.

Among other things, this interview will give us the opportunity to discuss in more detail:

Your future goals and plans

Your understanding of effective language teaching and learner needs

Your ability to analyze different areas of grammar and vocabulary

Your previous educational experiences

At the end of the interview, you may also be asked to complete a short task, such as correcting the spelling, grammar and punctuation in a paragraph. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the program, the facilities or our own experience!

Please note: We do not expect applicants to be experts in grammar. We simply need to check that you have a level of language awareness that should enable you to succeed in this program.

Applicants will receive the TESOL Plus Pre-Interview Assignment and Interview Rubric as reference.
