Continuing our commitment
towards human well-being
India may be on the road to greater financial growth, but almost one third of her 1.1 billion
people continue to live below the poverty line, with a large proportion in rural areas.
Isha Outreach, the social development branch of Isha Foundation, continues to focus on
alleviating poverty in these areas, which remains a chronic condition for almost 30 percent the
population. For the last two decades, we have been transforming the lives of the rural poor
through healthcare, educational, environmental and livelihood programs.
Between April 2011 - March 2012, we continued to improve our established programs, and
worked to introduce some new projects.
In the area of healthcare, we worked with Apollo Telemedicine to bring specialist consultations
and treatments to rural areas. We also provided low-cost preventative and curative medical care
for chronic diseases through our new Master Health Check-up initiative.
On the education front, we adopted 26 government schools through the launch of our
Government School Adoption Program, enabling us to provide quality education to over 25,000
more rural children.
We grew our green programs by officialising our Project GreenHands Green Schools program,
teaching our younger generation to become environmental caretakers through hands-on learning.
We also tapped into new channels such as events and weddings to distribute more tree saplings.
Thanks to the efforts and dedication of our staff and volunteers, the generous contribution of our
donors, and the committed support of our partners, Isha Outreach had another fantastic year in
continuing to enrich the lives of rural communities.
We invite you to share in our 2011–2012 achievements below and join our movement towards
the ‘business of well-being’.

Expanding holistic healthcare and community
programs
ction for Rural Rejuvenation’s (ARR) multi-pronged, multi-phased, holistic outreach program,
launched in 2003, continues to improve the overall health and quality of life in thousands of villages in Tamil Nadu, parts of Karnataka and in Pondicherry. In 2011-
2012, we continued and expanded our work in the following areas:
HEALTHCARE
ARR provides curative healthcare through our free Mobile Health Clinics (MHC) and low-cost Isha Rural Health Clinics (IRHC) while holistic, preventative healthcare is provided through
Arokiya Alai.
Healthcare for vulnerable populations
Our Mobile Health Clinics (MHCs) are specially designed and equipped to service deprived populations right in their communities, offering free, bi-monthly primary and minor emergency care to patients.
Each MHC team provides free, on-the-spot, examinations and medicines and refers more severe
cases to partnering local hospitals for advanced care. This period, our MHCs provided more preventative healthcare to patients by increasing our percentage of free holistic medicines.
MHC patients treated in 2011-2012
In slum areas (Chennai MH1, MH2 and CBE-MH3), our free MHCs treated more adult patients
compared to rural areas, where we served more geriatric patients. The poor conditions in slum
areas contribute to lower life expectancy, making it even more important for us to reach these
areas. In rural areas, there are higher elderly populations, but health problems are severe in this
age group, who can only be reached by providing medical care at their doorstep.

Accessible, affordable and expert care
Each of our four Isha Rural Health Clinics (IRHCs) in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Salem and
Velayuthampalayam are equipped with a lab, a pharmacy and facilities for minor surgery to
provide primary, antenatal, paediatric, geriatric, and emergency care to patients. This period, the
IRHCs introduced the Master Health Check-up Program and the Apollo Telemedicine Facility:
Master Health Check-up Program
The Master Health Check-up program, previously only available in urban areas, was
launched in our IRHCs to provide rural people with holistic healthcare at a minimal cost. The program enables us to work towards the wellness of individuals irrespective of their financial background and location.
Apollo Telemedicine’s first rural facility in Tamil Nadu
Apollo Telemedicine launched this facility on February 19, 2012 at the Isha Rural Health
Clinic in Alandurai, offering rural people the opportunity to consult with various
specialists from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and other Apollo hospitals to ensure a
thorough medical investigation and accurate diagnosis of their conditions. Patients
received consultations for diabetes, heart, neurological and respiratory diseases, gastritis,
knee injuries and disorders, kidney and urological diseases, and pediatric issues. Four
hundred people attended the facility and 13 were given specialist consultations from the
Chennai Apollo Hospital, which specializes in Pulmonology, Diabetes, Neurology,
Orthopedics, Dermatology and general healthcare.

Mr. Subramani, a 50-year old villager and
one of the 24 beneficiaries of the Master
Health Check-ups speaks of the pressing
need for healthcare in rural areas that the
Isha Rural Health Clinics are addressing:
“The Master Health check-up facility has not been available in rural areas so far, it
has only been available in the city and it is usually very costly. We were not able to
use this facility because of the cost and travelling. So we are very happy that the Isha
Rural Health Clinic has now launched the Master Health Check-up Program in our
village. The important thing is that the cost is very low when compared to other
hospitals. We hope this service will continue.”

Spreading Healthy way of Living
In 2007, we introduced Arokiya Alai (A Wave of Health) - a grassroots public health awareness campaign that functions through mobile general and specialty camps. We focus on topics such as diabetes, health check-ups, eye and skin care and paediatrics. During this period, we increased
our health awareness and specialty medical camps in rural areas, and serviced the Thane Cyclone hit areas with our Disaster Relief Camps.
Relief and replenishment in disaster areas Between January 19 and 29, 2012, our Mobile Health Clinics served 30 villages in the
Cuddalore district hit by the Thane Cyclone. A total of 4,127 patients were treated during the visit, and villagers were equipped with health and hygiene awareness. We taught Isha
Kriya to 1,453 people, and organized games for the school-children and villagers to help raise their spirits.

Engaging more villagers in well-being practices,
traditional games and cultural events ARR inspires rural communities to take ownership of their life situations by offering them Isha Yoga Programs and sports, which create a transforming and healing effect. In 2011 to 2012, we worked with more Government departments to share knowledge, and consulted with various organizations on our yoga and sports programs. We also revived traditional festivals to inspire and bring communities together in cultural celebrations. On 17
th April 2011 we celebrated our 8
th Rural Sports Festival in Gobichettipalayam, Erode District
bringing together 116 Volleyball and Throwball teams from Perundurai, Vemandam Palayam, Kaliyur and Anna Nagar to participate in this annual Isha event.
Cross-sharing and consulting events
In 2011-2012, we worked with more Government departments and consulted with various organizations to share knowledge on our yoga and sports programs. We also revived traditional festivals to inspire and bring communities together in cultural celebrations PYKKA Scheme: Isha consulted in designing programs for the PYKKA scheme and PYKKA has
integrated our film ‘A Ball Can Change the World’ in their Master Trainers Training for Sports
Program.
Conference of the State Secretaries & Ministers of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS): Isha

in Indian Schools.
Community Sports Training Program - Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education
(LNUPE): Isha conducted specially-designed yoga classes for the participants of this program (45
volunteers from 11 different African countries), organized by the Ministry of Sports and Youth
Affairs.
Field Visits by other Organizations : As recommended by UNICEF, project staff from ‘International
Inspiration’, Maharashtra came to study our “Community Games” delivery in project villages. They
were very inspired by the way our volunteers worked to implement programs. They were inspired by
our success as they could not achieve similar level of community motivation and ownership in their
projects despite expending greater effort and resources. Also, Smt. Shubha Srinivasan from Observer
Research Foundation visited Isha Outreach and AYUSH-Isha Organic Health Systems project in
Kolli hills to carry out a research study about sports activities.

Reviving indigenous health practices in
partnership with the Government of India
YUSH-Isha is a pilot project launched in October 2010 in collaboration with the
Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Government of India. The program works to improve the health of the rural populace, using a holistic
approach which involves a unique combination of Ayurveda, Siddha, Naturopathy, Yogic
practices and physical fitness programs. It has been implemented in 14 Panchayats (village councils) of the Kolli Hills block in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu.
AYUSH-Isha Highlights: 2011- 2012
Anti-Tobacco Campaign (May 31): Held awareness campaigns and a rally on Anti-tobacco
Day and World Environment Day to show the health effects of tobacco consumption.
Dental Camps (June 16-19 & June 25-26): Conducted free Dental Awareness and
Treatment Camps for tribal communities (3 for adults and 2 for schoolchildren during each
period). 738 patients were screened in the first camps (586 adults and 152 children) and 407
were screened in the second set (89 adults and 318 children). Dentists reported that almost
96% of the screened patients are suffering with dental problems.
World Environment Day Campaign (June 5): A mass awareness campaign was organized
to generate public awareness on the conservation of medicinal plants in the Kolli Hills’ forests and to promote protection and sustainable development of the land and forest resources.
AYUSH Sevaks’ yoga programs (Aug. 27 & 28): We conducted a yoga training program
for 125 Sevaks in Kolli Hills to equip them to motivate the rural population to practice their
yoga and fitness programs.
Sports (Throwball, Volleyball & Kabadi Tournaments - July & Oct): In July, 16 teams
(42 players) participated in women’s throwball tournaments led by Isha fitness experts w ith
PYKKA training. We also held boys and girls kabadi tournaments, drawing in a total of 603
student participants. Nine teams participated in our youth and adult volleyball tournament.

Bringing communities together in celebration
This period, we celebrated Independence Day for our project villages with various events. We
kicked off with a health awareness film released by AYUSH called “Un Arokiyam Un Kaiyil”-
“Your wellness in your hands” - which showcased the benefits of using traditional health
sciences (Siddha, Yoga and Naturopathy), combined with physical fitness programs and yogic
practices to promote health and well-being.
An exhibition was held in the convention grounds for people to purchase various organic
healthcare products, including our own AYUSH-Isha line. Food was also available at the
exhibition and was organized by one of the local hotels.
The cultural events of Oyilattam and Paduga dance were also organized to help create awareness
about the benefits of Indian traditional health practices at the festival. The Oyilattam dance was
performed with an AYUSH message while the Paduga dance was performed by the students of
Alathur Gundani - a Panchayat Union Middle School. Tug of war and Uriadiththal competitions
were then held for the participants who played with complete enthusiasm.
AYUSH-Isha Achievements In 2011–2012, AYUSH-Isha started to gain momentum and recognition in rural areas, allowing us to expand and reach more patients in need. Project performance since launch (Oct 2010 to

wound stayed unhealed. We spent up to Rs.15, 000 but left unsatisfied.
AYUSH-Isha physician diagnosed that I have severe hypertension and diabetes. So he explained
me the importance of taking medication immediately. I started the medicines that Doctor suggested
(Madhumega Chooranam, Seeraga Chooranam, Karisalai Karpam, Mathan Thailam for wound
dressing) and followed the diet as he recommended. After the regular treatment I noticed that my
wound started healing and felt very happy about that.. Nowadays I can walk casually and visit my
neighbours. In a few weeks time, 75% of my wound got healed.”

Trees for all a people’s movement towards reforestation
roject GreenHands (PGH) aims to make the population of Tamil Nadu aware of their
inevitable dependency on nature by inspiring them to plant trees. Since launch of the
program, 2.5 million saplings of 30 different tree species have been produced through
130 nurseries in 32 districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
From May 2011 to April 2012, the key focus was to increase PGH distribution channels and
transfer ownership of trees to the people through action-oriented awareness campaigns. To that
aim, a multitude of new opportunities were explored including World Environment Day
celebrations, Isha Foundation Programs and other local celebrations.
Sapling distribution at weddings
During the year, we successfully experimented in distributing saplings during wedding
ceremonies as gifts to the attending guests. This idea gained a positive response from the public
and has since been gaining popularity in nearby towns and cities.
P
Pooja and Prabhu distributed saplings to guests during
their wedding day. Prabhu shares his experience:
“Very soon after I did my basic yoga program with
Isha, I joined with a few of my friends to create a
nursery in our rented house in Chennai. We planted
5,000 saplings on the terrace of our house in Chennai
and thus began my association with Project
GreenHands.
For our wedding, both Pooja and I were eager to gift
saplings to our guests. We gave nearly 500 saplings to
our friends and relatives who greatly appreciated this
gesture. Some of my friends who have gotten married
since then have also done the same.
We encourage our friends, Isha meditators, and other people that we know to distribute saplings
during weddings, birthdays and other special occasions. I am happy to do my little bit for a green,
clean and beautiful world”.

Trees for life agro-forestry plantation in farmlands
Over half of Tamil Nadu’s 72 million people depend on agriculture, and nearly 75% of these
hold land under one hectare in size. Over the years, however, loss of ancient farming wisdom
and bad planting decisions have led to severe financial losses forcing farmers to give up their
livelihood and sell their land. In addition, the excessive use of chemicals and severe changes in
climatic patterns have made agricultural yields very unpredictable. Soil erosion is on the rise and
more trees are being cut down to make way for farming. Choosing and planting the right kind of
tree saplings in farm lands takes care of all these issues and creates a self-sustaining movement.
Achievements of the Agro Forestry Plantation
During this period, Project GreenHands worked with farming communities in five districts of
Tamil Nadu to promote agro-forestry plantations through its sub-project Isha Agro Movement
(IAM). Nearly 150,000 saplings were raised and distributed to farmers for planting in farmlands,
including a pilot of distribution of 46,600 saplings through nine NGOs specialised in farmer
support in the Pudukottai district.
Twelve-year old Elavarasan is one of 20 children from the Sadhguru Seva Ashram orphanage in Coimbatore who is pursuing his education at the Devanga Higher Secondary School. When PGH introduced the Green School Movement in his school, he was trained in sapling production and has contributed to raising 2,000 tree saplings along with other students in the National Green Corps (NGC) club.
“Before this program started in our school, we would spend our time playing games and chatting until it was time to go home. When they told us we would be growing saplings in our school, we were very excited. Dhanasekaran Sir, our NGC teacher, helped us understand the various activities involved in nursery creation. We filled covers with soil, sowed seeds, watered them regularly and weeded and maintained them. I will always remember when the sapling sprouted from the seed on the first day because it made me feel so happy. We formed a team amongst ourselves to divide the work and maintain the saplings. All of us have planted one sapling each in the school and distributed the remaining saplings to other children, and in nearby shops. We are very eager to start planting more trees over the next year.”
Elvarasan’s school planting experience

Green schools delivering hands-on environmental
education
Project GreenHands has been conducting ongoing awareness camps for school children to inspire
them to plant trees. Through the camps, children have shown a strong ability to establish
relationships with trees and to care for them as another life form.
This year, we introduced a new model called Green Schools, in collaboration with the Education
Department of Tamil Nadu. The project is executed through the students of National Green
Corps (NGC) - a program conceptualized and initiated by the Ministry of Environment and
Forests, Government of India to provide environmental education to children across the country.
As part of the program structure, every school is provided with seeds and covers to raise 2,000
saplings, and workshops are conducted to train students in sapling production. Students are given
the opportunity to interact in every aspect of nursery production and tree planting - from sowing
a seed to distributing saplings within the community to even planting it themselves.
Delivering environmental education as an experience rather than curriculum-based helps children
develop a strong sense of ownership towards the trees. It builds ‘green consciousnesses’ amongst
the younger generation to become environmental caretakers.
Saplings grown in schools are planted on school premises and distributed to other schools and
nearby residential locations for planting in households. This movement encourages community
tree plantation in areas of human habitation where ownership of saplings is transferred to the
local community who ensure the survival of the saplings.
Since launch, 25,000 school children from 500 schools in the Erode and Coimbatore districts
have successfully produced and planted 1 million saplings.
To date, 14 million saplings have been produced and distributed with the support of over 1.5
million volunteers across 32 districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

blossoming of rural children
As a part of Isha’s educationl outreach programs, Isha Vidhya rural schools were started in
villages (under the umbrella of Isha Education, established in 2005) to provide high quality
education to underprivileged rural children who cannot otherwise access or afford it.
Isha Vidhya schools
Take education beyond literacy and rudimentary skills
Strive to make children fluent in English and adept in computer skills Adopt a nurturing approach to education, helping children realize their full potential
Actively promote education of female children Increase educational awareness in rural communities Preserve village identities and culture
Equip rural youth with skills to rise above the ‘hopeless’ situation they often find themselves in, empowering them to pursue higher studies or gainful employment
Geographical spread details - School locations
Isha Vidhya’s seven schools are located in the districts of Coimbatore, Nagercoil, Tuticorin,
Erode, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Salem in Tamil Nadu, with an eighth school proposed at
Chittor District in Andhra Pradesh.

inaugurated by Mr. Anandkittuswamy, MLA, Modakkuruchi with Mr. Shanmugan, the Lions
Club district governor, of Erode as the Guest of Honour. Over a thousand people, 500 of whom
were students, benefited from this camp.
Nutritious and delicious mid-day meals
Isha Vidhya turned the page on a new chapter in its existence, with the inauguration of a kitchen
and kitchen garden on July 1 in each of our seven Isha Vidhya schools. The facilities were made
possible thanks to the generous contribution of a donor from Dubai. Each school can now grow
some of their own vegetables and prepare students’ noon meals right within their premises .
Each kitchen has been equipped for 800 students but that can be expanded in to provide for up to
1500 students. The meals cooked in these kitchens are fortified with eight essential
micronutrients to help address the problem of malnutrition that is so rampant in rural India.
