WearepleasedtowelcometoMiamiandtheHavighurstCentertheCentralEurasianStudiesSociety(CESS).PreviouslyhousedatHarvardandconsistingofover1500membersworldwide,CESSoperatesawebsite(www.cess.muohio.edu),alistserve,ajournalandanannualconference,thisyearattheUniversityofWashingtoninSeattle,andnextatGeorgetownUniversityinWashingtonDC.CESS’spresenceoncampuswillcontinueourfocusonintegratingRussian,Eurasian,EastAsianandMiddleEasternStudiesthatwestartedwithourSilkRoadfocusin2004. AspartoftheSilkRoadfocus,wearelookingforwardtowelcomingoncampustheIlkhomTheatrecompanyfromUzbekistan.Theywillbeoncampusforaweek-longresidencyandperformanceinApril.TheyremainthemosteminentindependenttheatrecompanyinCentralAsia,havingbeenestablishedduringtheGorbachevperiodbyeminentdirectorMarkWeil,whowastragicallymurderedundersuspiciouscircumstancesinTashkentjustbeforetheopeningoftheirnewseason.Theirworkexplorestheintersectionalitybetweengenderandsexualidentity;religiousexpressioninIslamicsocieties;andtherelationshipbetweenrepressivestatesandsociety.Welookforwardtoworkingwiththemwhentheycome.Thiswillbetheironlymid-Westperformanceontheirtour. ThisfallalsomarksthebeginningofanothertwoyearfocusattheHavighurstCenter,thisoneonColdWarculture. AlmosttwentyyearshavepassedsincetheendoftheColdWar.Thisgeopolitical cleavage which defined the second half of the 20th century was not only a period of fierce competition between two military superpowers, but it also engendered specific ways of thinking, feeling and acting for millions of people onbothsidesoftheIronCurtain.Ontheonehand,themilitaryrivalryhadpromotedthevisionthatcaststheworldintocompetingbinariesofgoodandevil.Ontheotherhand,itgeneratedpopularresistanceandsubversionoftheofficial propaganda, creating anti-war movements, counter-cultural trends in music,theaterandart,therebycreatingaspaceforalternativethinking. The Havighurst Center will consider these cultural reflections of the ColdWareraaswellastheremnantsoftheColdWarcultureandthinkingtodayaspartofitsfocusontheColdWarbeginningFall2007.TheAnnualYoungResearchersConference,theColloquiaSeriesandvariousinvitedguestlecturersthroughouttheyearwillconsidersuchtopicsaspopularresistanceandmaintainingpersonalautonomyunderrepressivepoliticalregimes,responsestopoliticalritualsandpropaganda,everydaylifeundertheColdWar,thereinvention of history and building memories of the Cold War, the reflections of theColdWarthinkingandpracticesintoday’sworld.Moreinformationabouttheseeventsisavailableinthisnewsletterandonlineatwww.muohio.edu/havighurstcenter. Thisfall,IwasfortunatetobepartofasmallgroupofacademicsandjournalistswhovisitedRussiaattheinvitationoftheRussiannewsagencytomeetwithpartyleadersandwithPresidentPutin.AfteraweekofmeetinginMoscowandKazan,thisgroup,calledtheValdaiInternationalDiscussionClub, was flown to Sochi on Friday September 14 fora4hourlunchanddiscussionwithPutin.HemetusinthepresidentialresidenceinSochionthehillsoverlookingtheBlackSea,wherethe2014WinterOlympicswillbeset.Theconversationwasfrank,andhewasaskedaboutelectiontampering,abouthisplanstostepaside(ornot)andaboutchargesofcronyismandcorruptionofthetopelite.ThefulltextisavailableontheKremlinwebsiteathttp://kremlin.ru/eng/speeches/2007/09/14/1801_type82917type84779_144106.shtml My impression of him was certainly of someone with great confidence, veryawareofhispower,verycarefulinchoosinghisformulationofwordssoasnottooutrightsaysomethingthatwasnottrue,andindeedquiteimpressive.Also athletic, controlled, and indeed a fitting tribute to the KGB system that producedhim.YetyoucouldalsounderstandwhyRussianswhohavebeen

ill-servedbypoorleadershipforalongtimewouldrallytohissupport.TheelectionstotheParliamentinDecemberandthePresidencyinMarchpromisetobeveryinteresting,evenifnothighlydemocratic.ThereismoreinformationaboutthetripontheCenter’swebsite,andanyoneinterestedinamoreindepthanalysisiswelcometocometoalectureI’mgivingonNovember9attheMiamiUniversityArtMuseumfrom10am-noon.

InUzbekistan,therewerenodancesforwomenuntilthe1920s.TheBochaBoys,whosedanceswereverymuchapartofcourtlifefromancienttimes,playedauniquepartintheevolutionofthecountry’shistoricalculture.Thisepicdancetheaterworkisinspiredbytheearly20th-centuryiconographicpaintingsoftheBochaBoysbyanexiledRussianwhofellinlovewiththeBochaBoys,convertedtoIslamandchangedhisnametoUstoMumin.Thiscompellingmulti-mediaproductionperformedinRussianwithEnglishsurtitlesbringstolifethetumultuousperiodofthetransitionbetweentheruleoftheImperialRussiaandSovietRussiainTurkistan.

MichaelRouland(Ph.D.2005,GeorgetownUniversity)willbeservingasAssistantDirectoroftheHavighurstCenterforRussianandPost-SovietStudies.Hisdissertation,“MusicandtheMakingoftheKazakNation,1920-1936,”considerstheSovietpolicyofrootingbothsocialistandnationalistmessagesinpublicperformancecultureaspartofamodernizationcampaigntopromotenationalism,aconstructednationalvision,andanationalstateinKazakstan.Hisinterestsincludefilmic, literary, and musical expressions of Central Asian

identityandhehasauthoredseveralarticlesonthesethemes.HeiscurrentlyeditingacollectionofarticlesontheperformativeaspectsofEurasianidentityaswellasavolumeonthehistoryofCentralAsiancinema.

“Becareful,thisisRussia”,orsotheLeninimpersonatortoldourHavighursttripgrouponRedSquareinMoscow.TheadvicewouldhavebeenbettergivenwhenIsteppedofftheplanesixweeksprior. IlandedinSt.PetersburgwiththeNovgorodIntensiveRussianLanguagetriponMay21st.Soonafterwelanded,Iandtwootherenterprisingindividualsdecidedtogoseethecityduringthebeautifulwhitenights.Armedwithonlya

vagueideaofwherethenearestmetrostationwasandsomerecentlyexchangedrubles,wesetout.Anhourlater,wewerewalkingupNevskyprospect,seeingthefabulousfaçadesofthechurches,hotels,shops,andformerpalacesthatlinedthestreet,aswellasthecanalsthatwindeverywhichwaythroughthecity,makingSt.PetersburgtrulytheVeniceoftheNorth.

AftertwodaysinSt.Petersburg,weboardedabusforNovgorodwhereweweretostayforfourweekswithhostfamiliesandlearn(inmycaseforthefirst time) Russian at the state university. Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomedbyourhostfamilies.ThenextdaywerushedstraightintointensiveRussian.Thelanguageprogramiswhatitsaysitis,intense.However,coupledwitheverydayusage,onecanpickitupratherquickly.Asidefromclasses,wetooktripsaroundtown,seeingthesites.HalfwaythroughourprogramwetookthetraintoMoscowwherewesawthesitesofthecity.WereturnedtoNovgorodand finished our classes and then back to St. Petersburg. I was put on the Neva ExpresstraintoMoscowtomeetthesecondgroupfromtheHavighurstCenter’ssummerprogram. DuringtheHavighurstRussiaSummerWorkshop,weexploredindepthbothpoliticalandculturalsiteswithinthecontextofhowthepastispackagedinthepost-SovietpresentinRussia.Dr.NorrisandDr.SutcliffeledusandprovideduswithhoursofstimulatingconversationaboutanyRussiantopicwecouldthinkof.WehadseveralmeetingswithverywellknownRussians:YegorGaidar,the first post-Soviet Prime Minister, Karen Shakhnazarov, a movie director and head of Russia’s largest film studio, Mosfilm, and Aleksei Balabanov, a movie director at Russia’s second largest film studio, Lenfilm. IhadanabsolutelywonderfulanduniqueexperienceinRussia.IwouldhighlyrecommendtoanystudentinterestedinRussianstudiestotakebothtrips.Reflecting upon my experiences this summer in Russia, I couldn’t imagine taking onetripwithouttheother.

I did what all ex-patsinRussiado:teachEnglish.IdabbledinRussiansportslikeballroomdancingandsoccer,celebratedRussianholidays,whichforsomereasonoccurredevery3-4weeks,excluding the “Russian- Shuts-Down” for the first half of January. Inmysparetime,Ithought“WhatIamgoingtodonext?”CouldIteachEnglishinRussiaforacoupleyears?No.Thewatercontainsparasites,thebabushkasbarkordersatyouandthemetroleavesyoufeelinglikeashowerisnecessary.Fortunately,anopportunitypresenteditselfintheformofanemailfrommyformeremployer.IeagerlyreadaproposalaboutaccompanyingmyU.S.Representative,MarcyKaptur,thatsummerinUkraine.IalmostforgotIsatinafreezingcoldhostelinEstonia.IwasgoingtoKiev! Kiev or Bust. UkrainianPresidentVictorYushchenkohostedareceptionattendedbytheParliamentarianDelegatesduringthe16thannualOSCEParliamentaryDelegation.CongresswomanKapturhadafullagendatoaccompanyourmutualhighspirits.Iaccompaniedhertoherancestralvillage,BurtynintheKhelmenskyOblast,to

assessitsdevelopment.CongresswomanKapturhasdevoted much of her time, energy and financial support overthelast30yearstothisregion.WorkingextensivelythroughtheCatholicorganization,Caritas-Spes,CongresswomanKapturnotedtheaccomplishmentsofthisvillage:afunctioninghumanitariancenter,thegraduationof8studentsfromOstrohAcademy,andambitiousplansbyvolunteersandvillagersforcontinuous-regionalgrowth.CongresswomanKapturandIvoyagedtotheancientcityofKamianets-Podilsky,

asouth-westernUkrainiancitywithTurkish,Russianand Polish influences. With the director of the Center ofHistoryandCivicEducationofNovaDobaandCongresswoman Kaptur, I saw first-hand how successful youngUkrainianscanbewheneducatedabouttheircivicresponsibility.Inaddition,wemetwithBishopStanislavShyrokoradyuk,directororCaritas-Spes,todiscusshumanitarianaidetoUkrainianfamiliesandtheestablishmentofself-sustainingbusinesses. This American Life. UponmyreturntotheUS, Ms. Kaptur offered me a position in her Toledo District Office. I continue to work on developmentprojectsinEasternEurope,andalsolocalcommunitydevelopment.IrealizeifIhadn’tpursuedmystudiesinRussia,Iwouldn’thavehadthischance.Now,ifonlyIcouldhavetheearofPutin–whoknowswhereI’dendup…hopefully,notintheGulag!

Thefellowshipsaredesignedforjuniorscholarsofexceptionalpromise.Successfulcandidateswillhavetheopportunitytopursuetheirresearchagendaforacalendaryearwiththesupportofacompetitivesalaryandupto$2,000forresearchsupport.
