Yuma, AZGYEDC explores spaceport in YumaFacility would launch small-satellite rockets
•Yuma Sun•24 Feb 2019•BY MARA KNAUB @YSMARAKNAUBYuma County would be ideal for launching rockets due to the weather and controlled airspace, according to officials working on creating a spaceport in the area. The potential John McCain Yuma Spaceport was the subject of the Greater Yuma Economic Development Corporation’s quarterly investor luncheon on Tuesday. Julie Engel, GYEDC president and CEO, talked about why Yuma County is a strong contender, what’s being done to bring a spaceport to Yuma and what needs to happen to make it a reality. “This topic is very exciting and important,” she noted. The almost constant clear skies and no overhead commercial flights along the trajectory to the Cortez Sea, which would take a rocket only 7 seconds to reach. As a bonus, the area is home to two military installations, and with Yuma Proving Ground and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma come some of the skills needed for launching rockets, which is very similar to launching missiles.
An environmental impact study is now needed to make sure a spaceport won’t harm the environment and create hardships to neighboring areas, including MCAS Yuma. The study will cost about $1 million, and Engel hopes the state will chip in since a spaceport would be an asset to the whole state, not just Yuma. The infrastructure needed to get started includes an antenna, roads to the site since it’s currently “raw,” and an airport apron, a big concrete pad that can handle the heat from boosters taking off.“We’re marching towards this goal,” Engel said, noting that she sees a spaceport coming to fruition in about three years.
