Introduction

SPE in addition to being a formidable association of professionals creating unique opportunity to contribute to the development of the oil and gas industry through information dissemination and networking also reaches out to the community where they operate. The Community Service arm works to identify opportunities to give back to the society by reaching across to the less privileged as well as identifying programs to benefit the communities in which we operate. Sponsorship of the programme is through voluntary donation by SPE members .

The SPE community visit to the Friends of the Disabled was conducted in order to offer scholarship to some of the physically challenged in the society to enable them get some skills that will empower them to be self-sufficient in the future.

The Friends of the Disabled was founded in 1996 to cater to the needs of the physically challenged and to help them identify and build skills that make them less vulnerable and economically self reliant.

In 1999, the Vocational Training was opened providing the opportunity for the disabled and non-disabled persons to learn practical skills for use in the employment market/establishment of business. The students choose trades ranging from metal work to fabrication.

Planning and Budgeting Planning of this event was carried out by the community service leadership, Augusta Opusunju and Augusta Igweze, with the support of the Lagos section 61 board members. The event was funded by donations from SPE section 61 members across different organizations with volunteer SPE section 61 board members acting as focal points for raising the funds. A total sum of N902,000 was raised. Based on the amount realized, scholarship was awarded to three students of the institution for one year. The cost of training a student is N300,000 for one year. Two years training is usually required per student.
