CARBINER 5- 2018
South Australia’s retiring jockey, Clare Lindop was introduced to the gathering and interviewed by Terry to
the accompaniment of a number of videos from prominent races in which she featured. Unfortunately one of
these included a terrible fall which required considerable time “out of the saddle” to recover to be in a
condition to race ride again. Clare was the first woman to win the VRC Derby (on Rebel Raider) and was
hailed as a “trailblazer” for female jockeys. Clare explained that her time in the saddle had provided her with a
most enjoyable career, and that she hoped to help others in the future, working with SAJC and associated clubs
to encourage and assist new jockeys – particularly females – in the sport of racing. CCSA Member and
prominent South Australian Trainer, Leon Macdonald made a presentation on behalf of the Club and wished
Clare well in the future.
Simon Marshall was the key note speaker talking up his career in racing and
the arduous time he had with a very unforgiving father who “rode” him to the
end of his mettle in a very up and down career. His time with boxer Jeff Fenech
also taught him strength and perseverance, to the point that he didn’t give up
too easily but soon realised that his time with racing was not going to be an
enduring one.
Simon Marshall
As a finale to a very entertaining day ever popular Paul Martell, a Carbine Club
favourite, wowed the audience with some great humour and enticing ways to
woo the many wives that he has had!
TAS Recipients to the Fore CCTAS has been very pleased to watch the progress of two grant recipients in Sam Edgar (tennis) and
Alex Peroni (Formula Renault racing).
Sam pictured below in the green shirt) recently reached a milestone when he won his first Mens Open
Tournament (The Clarence Open AMT) while Alex carried the Carbine Club logo to victory in two major
European races.
