Demystifying the learning of algebra! This one-day workshop empowers teachers to understand and use the visual, kinesthetic, and pictorial Hands-On Equations® teaching methodology to successfully present essential algebraic concepts to students in grades 3 to 8. By “breaking the code” of algebra, Hands-On Equations® empowers students to work with sophisticated-looking algebraic concepts, thereby enhancing their self-esteem and interest in mathematics.

Balancing equations with unknowns on both sides becomes child’s play!Your students will have fun with algebraic thinking and will build a visual and kinesthetic foundation for Algebra1!

A Hands-On Equations® Workshop(for teachers of grades 3 to 9)

Making Algebra Child’s Play®

• Learn how to physically and pictorially represent algebraic equations!

• Understand the “legal moves” which may be used to balance and solve algebraic equations!

• Enable your students to understand and solve equations such as 4x + 2 = 2x + 10 and 2(x + 4) + x = 2x + 9 in as little as seven lessons!

• Experience the “teacher-as-the-coach” mode of instruction.

• Understand the power of Piagetian Learning!

• Learn how to use Hands-On Equations® to teach students to set up and solve verbal problems!

• Learn how to work with the white pawn, which is the opposite of the blue pawn, to solve equations such as 2x + 3 = 6 – x.

• Learn a meaningful way to teach addition and subtraction of integers!

• Receive an individual set of Hands-On Equations ($34.95 value), suitable for use with one student.

Recommended for:This workshop is recommended for teachers of grades 3 to 8, teachers of special education students (grades 4 – 12) and teachers of high school students struggling with algebra. Mathematics supervisors will find this workshop of particular value.

Hands-On Equations®

Learn how to intuitively teach:The Subtraction Property of Equality, the Distributive Property, the Property of Additive Inverses, the Additive Identity Element, and much, much more….

Fall 2010 Edition

Hands-On Equations®

Verbal Problems Workshop(for teachers in grades 4 to 9)

Demystify the teachingof word problems!

Learn how to transform verbal problems into a physical or pictorial representation that your students can understand and solve using the

methods of Hands-On Equations®. See how consecutive odd integer problems and age

problems become child’s play!

High school teachers will find these ideas helpful for

students struggling with algebra.

Previous experience with Hands-On Equations® and/or attendance at a full-day Making Algebra Child’s Play® workshop is a prerequisite for attending this workshop. The focus of the workshop will be the representation of verbal problems using Hands-On Equations®, including consecutive number problems, age, coin and distance problems. Helpful suggestions will be provided to enhance student confidence in working with word problems.

A brief review of the Hands-On Equations® solution methods for each level will be presented prior to introducing verbal problems that require those solution methods. Examples will be presented from all three levels of Hands-On Equations®, with a focus on Level I. Training materials to be provided to each participant include the Hands-On Equations® Verbal Problems Book ($35 value) and a set of student game pieces with flat laminated scale ($6.50 value)

YOU WILL BE DELIGHTED TO SEE HOW A VISUAL REPRESENTATION CAN ENABLE STUDENTS TO SOLVE WORD PROBLEMS SUCH AS THE FOLLOWING:• Four times a number, increased by 5, is the same as three times a number, increased by 9. Find the number.

• Sarah played the piano three days in a row. Each day she played twice as long as the previous day. If she played 24 minutes on the last day, how many minutes did she play on the first day?

• 2/3 of a number increased by 4, is the same as 1/3 of the number, increased by 8. Find the number.

• Two wagons leave the same location and travel in opposite directions. One wagon goes 6 miles per hour faster than the other. The slower wagon leaves at noon, while the faster one leaves at 2:00 pm. If at 4:00 pm the wagons are 36 miles apart, how fast does each wagon travel? (PICTORIAL)

• Jose is 6 years younger than twice Juan’s age. In 5 years, Juan will be Jose’s present age. How old is each?

The result of three research studies involving a total of 22 classrooms and 418 students is summarized above. The percentages shown are the grade group averages for the given test. We note that at each grade level 1) the students had a large gain from the pre-test to each of the post-tests, 2) the students did equally well using the pictorial notation (last column) as they did in using the game pieces (middle column), and 3) the program is age blind: the 4th graders did as well as the 6th and 8th graders. The full report can be found on the research page of www.borenson.com. Pre-test questions: a. 2x = 8, b. x + 3 = 8, c. 2x + 1 = 13, d. 3x = x + 12, e. 4x + 3 = 3x + 6, f. 2(2x + 1) = 2x + 6.

The table above shows the gain the 4th graders made in only seven lessons. 79% of these 4th graders, which included students from the inner city, were able to successfully solve the equation 4x + 3 = 3x + 8 after seven lessons of instruction. It is worth noting that the retention test was administered three weeks after instruction in Lesson #7, with no Hands-On Equations® instruction in the interim. Furthermore, the retention test was taken without the use of the game pieces. The full report can be found on the research page of www.borenson.com.
