For the BMW X5 chassis, RUVILLE offers a diverse product portfolio that was nearly completed with the introduction of suspension struts for front and rear axles. During repair work, both general as well as specific procedures have to be followed for the respective components.

Vehicle-specific mounting instructions:

For some chassis components and for the wheel bearings in the BMW X5, specific mounting instructions have to be followed. These are described in more detail below. The applicable articles are highlighted in grey on the table.

BMW X5 CHASSIS

General mounting instructions:

In general, replace all self-locking nuts. Replacing the screws is always recommended. After working on the chassis, it is always advisable to measure the axles; in the case of some repairs, it is also mandatory.

The springs of a BMW X5 have a very high spring force – approx. 18,000 N (compared with a VW Polo, 6,000), therefore,

an appropriately designed spring compressor has to be used. On vehicles with pneumatic suspension, the system has to be deactivated and evacuated for certain jobs.

On vehicles with a steering angle sensor, the sensor has to be recalibrated for certain jobs.

Article: 5033 | Wheel Bearing Set, Front Axle

The compression fit surfaces on the wheel bearing and on the swivel bearing must be clean, oil-free and grease-free!The bearing seat in the swivel bearing has to be sprayed with Loctite 638 on the top 50% of its surface! As shown in Figure 1, the wider bevel of the bearing must point toward the swivel bearing! These mounting instructions must be followed in order to ensure a secure seat and prevent the bearing in the swivel bearing from twisting.

When installing the new bushing in the track control arm, be sure to note the installation position. The overhang between the track control arm and bushing must be 5.75 mm +/- 0.7 mm in order to ensure a correct axle position. All self-locking nuts must be re-placed. The screw joint must be drawn tight under stress in order to prevent twisting of the new bushing. After the mounting has been completed, the axle must be measured and, if applicable, the steering angle sensor must also be aligned.

The suspension strut support bearing is usually equipped with a centring pin (1), which determines the mounting position of the suspension strut in the wheel housing. In some cases, however, this centring pin may not be present. In such cases, the threaded bolts of the suspension strut support bearing to the wheel housing must be marked when the suspension strut is removed so that the original camber is approximately retained.Only one nut may be removed for marking at a time!During the installation, the suspension strut is aligned to the drilled holes in the wheelhouse if the centring pin (1) is present, or to the markings on the wheelhouse if the spacer bolts are used, and pushed up. The self-locking nuts have to be replaced.

When the mounting is com-pleted, an electronic chassis measurement has to be taken if a suspension strut was mounted with a support bearing without centring pin.A special tool has to be used for the precise adjustment of the camber.

Article: 915086 | Support/Steering Link, Front Axle, checking the play

In general, there is some minimal play in the steering link, and therefore it should be regarded as normal. To check the play, apply light pressure to the tension rod hori-zontally and vertically. If the play is too large, the steering link and tension rod must be replaced. If the play is within the expected range, the screw joint must be tested by tightening it with a torque spanner. For this purpose, the screw joint is tightened with 60% of the torque value. If the torque spanner cracks or crunches, the rubber parts of the tension rod must be replaced.CAUtIon: The rubber parts may only be replaced once!If the screw joint turns, the tension rod and steering link must be replaced.
