Northern Echo Pitch

Brief“You have been commissioned by the Northern Echo to produce a

new magazine or newspaper product. Your product could be in

any style or genre but it must be self financed through sales or

advertising. You must also produce your magazine for a specified

audience segment within the 16 to 25 age group.”

Meeting the BriefI will produce a high quality football magazine, that will appeal to a regional target

audience (North East).

My magazine will appeal to Northern Echo readers.

It will be aimed at readers between 16 and 24.

Finally, the magazine will be sold and funded through advertising.

Unique Selling PointThe unique selling point:

● Fan’s perspective - on the fan’s side due to recent events, discusses situations that affect the

fans of the sport (ticket prices)

● Focuses on North East football, with some smaller articles on breaking news in other

leagues/countries.

● As it is focusing on North East football, target research is a big thing and so the articles are

written to suit a specific target audience.

● If it succeeds in the North East there is always the option of going national, rather than

regional.

Why Football?

52,405 - St James Park Capacity

49,000

Stadium of Light Capacity

34,988 Riverside Stadium

The top three football clubs in the North East have a joint stadium capacity of 136,393 and so with my magazine focusing on North East football I have predicted that it will circulate and sell to at least 7.5 thousand people (around 5.5% of this number) - this is why I see it as a realistic target because bearing in mind, there are more lower league North East teams that have supporters and then general people who are interested in the sport.

Newcastle United FCSunderland AFCMiddlesbrough FCCarlisle FCHartlepool FCGateshead FC (Semi-Pro)

Darlington 1883 (Semi-Pro)

Blyth Spartans (Semi-Pro)

A list of the North East teams.

Idea ConclusionThe reason I chose football other than the reason suggested before:

● Passionate about the sport

● Entertaining

● Controversial

● Great stories to write about

● Most popular sport in the UK

Target Audience Primary Target Audience -

Age: 16-24

Gender Ratio: Male (70%)

Socioeconomic: B, C1, C2 - The majority of my target audience work and therefore I have decided to sell my magazine due to the fact they have enough disposable income.

Tribe: Sport Junkies - most passionate about sport.

Secondary Target Audience -

Age: 16-24 (Female) & 24+ (Both Genders)

Gender: Female (30%)

Socioeconomic: B, C1, C2 - Female

How will I appeal to my audience?● Focus on North East football

● Use imagery from the North East or imagery that they can relate to

● Make sure that advertisements are all from the North East region and some are local

and not national.

● Specific supporters I want to target - Newcastle fans, Boro fans, Sunderland fans

Client ConstraintsDue to my clients I will be using local, but specific advertising - this means that local sports/football businesses will be able to promote themselves, creating a bond between the community and the magazine.

Not only my target audience but also the Northern Echo’s target audience may read this and so I have to make sure that my content will be enjoyable for them - including imagery. In addition to this is that I need to have a strict schedule of meeting production deadlines, in order to keep the professionality of the Northern Echo.

Northern Echo will take 33% of my profits and so this will be shown in my profit and revenue slide.

IPSO 1 -To not take photos in private places unless I have permission.

2 - To make sure that my models who are under 18 have parental permission to do so.

3 - My third golden rule is to plan my articles properly to get the best content possible -

this includes photoshoots and interviews.

4 - I will use my own imagery only as I don’t want to use secondary imagery because it

isn’t my own.

5 - Finally I need to carry out risk assessments to stop any chance of injuries.

Genre ResearchNot many adult targeted football magazines and so I took inspiration from a few, mainly FourFourTwo. It helped a lot with understanding price range.

Flatplans

Commercial ViabilityNet Profit: £11,561.65

(Monthly Magazine) - So weekly profit is £2980.50

Total Expenditure:£4963.35

BriefI believe that my magazine has what it takes to be the next magazine that is funded by

the Northern Echo, due to the passion and confidence I have in it.

Furthermore, it targets the correct people and as my slides have shown the interest in

this sport around the North East is absolutely massive, with the possibility of it branching

out.

Finally, it makes a really good profit and so therefore you can’t go wrong with it.

Thanks Any Questions?
