El colgador Calvet, un diseño inédito de GAUDÍ

reeditado por BD Barcelona La pieza de mobiliario más pequeña realizada por Antoni Gaudí, el

colgador Calvet de 1903, ha sido reeditado en exclusiva por BD

Barcelona. Un diseño inédito del arquitecto modernista que ahora ve la

luz.

En el número de marzo hablamos y recorrimos una vivienda en uno de los edificios más desconocidos

de Gaudí en Barcelona, Casa Calvet. Y hoy tenemos una buenísima noticia que darte, la firma editoria

catalana BD presenta en exclusiva mundial un colgador diseñado por el arquitecto como parte del mobiliario de

esta casa, la firma lo reedita dentro de su catálogo Art Editions.

Para la Casa Calvet, construida para los fabricantes de tejidos Herederos de Pedro Mártir Calvet, Gaudí diseñó

un conjunto de sofá, butacas, sillas y taburetes tapizados, pero en este caso el protagonista es uno de esos

elementos menores que llaman la atención por su complejidad, quizás la pieza más pequeña jamás realizada por

el arquitecto catalán.

Sin embargo, a pesar de su reducido tamaño, este colgador revela la esencia de Antoni Gaudí al completo, su

humor, su libertad y su inabarcable sentido estético. Como lo describe la marca, se trata de “un cuerpo central de

madera, de forma rectangular, bordes ondulantes y superficie atravesada por tres aberturas alargadas, se une por

medio de dos cintas de acero patinado en latón a otros dos elementos, también de madera, torneados con formas

redondeadas, uno de los cuales es el soporte parietal y el otro el colgadero propiamente dicho, aunque también

de las barras del cuerpo central podrían colgarse prendas como bufandas u objetos como paraguas, por ejemplo”.

describe así esta pieza única: “Contemplar de cerca este pequeño mueble es impresionante, ya que las cintas

conservan toda la viveza del gesto de unas manos, las de Gaudí sin duda, que las han convertido en un nudo con

el que unir las tres partes de madera: ligeras y ondulantes, las atan gentilmente, sin violentarlas, manteniendo

entre ellas una completa independencia”.

Possibly the smallest piece the architect ever made. BD re-edited this

piece and is now part of its Art Editions catalogue

Casa Calvet was constructed by Gaudí for the heirs of Pedro Mártir Calvet,

textile makers, between 1898 and 1899, although the finishes of construction

were not completed until nearly 1903, the year in which a large part of the

furniture was to be made.

As with many other buildings of this type in the Eixample of Barcelona, the

home of the owners was found on the first floor, while on the ground floor and

basement there were offices and business stores.

For the main living room, Gaudí designed a matching sofa, armchairs, chairs

and stools all upholstered in silk, constructed with a gold metal base placed

over the legs and mounted on wooden posts. Inspired ironically and

doubtlessly in the style of Louis XV – then admired by the aristocratic

bourgeoisie across Europe while the furniture designed for different interiors

of offices were of one single material using a joint system in oak, which at that

time began to replace other more “luxurious” wooden materials like rosewood

and mahogany. It consisted of a considerable variety of tables, chairs with or

without armrests, benches, settees, stools, shelves and screens, definitely a

complete and more homogeneous matching furniture collection in all of

Gaudí’s career.

Apart from the main furniture, some minor elements draw attention due to

complexity, whether referred to in the humour that some fashion designs were

then interpreted, like that of the “Rococo” mirror, referring to its own structure.

Also, the two hangers which have gotten to us today, a grand one, in

polichromeed iron and a wooden shaped crown, and the other, is the one that

concerns us here forming part of the Gaudí Catherdra Collection.

Perhaps this is the smallest piece of furniture ever made by Gaudí with a

maximum dimension of 25 centimetres. However, it produces and reveals

more complexity than any other major work, for which these pieces constitute,

precisely proof of his creations.

Let’s look at the hangers details. A central rectangular wooden body with

curved edges. A surface crossed by three elongated openings, joined at the

middle with two brass plated steel ribbons to another couple of elements, also

of wood. Fixed together with rounded shapes, one being the perietal support

and the other correctly called, the hanger. Other accessories can also be hung

from the bars of the central piece like for example, scarves and umberellas.

Taking a closer look is impressive, as the brass plated steel ribbons

conserve the vividness of the gesture of some hands. They’re clearly

Gaudí’s, converting them into a knot, tying the three wooden parts that

form it: light waves, gently bind them, maintaining between them

complete independence.

As on many other occasions with Gaudí’s work, this hanger has no design in the

sense that there was nothing planned beforehand, for something that had to

be materialised for a particular project. It’s more of a design in action – fingers

handling ribbon with which the solid elements are subtly linked in the air. But

there is more. What are the three wooden elements, in effect? The one that is

fixed to the wall is a series production. The other which serves as the hanger,

has the appearance of the final finishes abundant in other furniture and

handrails. Doesn’t the third look like a stand, a lecturn that holds a book? Three

different elements which are in reality three objets trouvés, attached with a

ribbon. Although metalic, it shows wavey forms and a recently tied vivid fresh

knot. The result is an amazing assemblage before the assemblage, a ready-

made before the ready-made.

As would have happened with many pioneered art techniques, Gaudí did

not “invent” the elements needed to reach some ends already

established, but literally “gathers” them, before deciding the purpose

they serve, because in reality everything can serve everything. In this

wonderful little hanger, in a few words is found, in all its concentrated

intensity, the essence of Gaudí’s ultimate artistic mentality – in other

words – his “wild thinking”.

Se ha presentado el colgador Calvet, editado por BD Barcelona. La Casa

Calvet fue construida por Gaudí para los Herederos de Pedro Mártir Calvet,

fabricantes de tejidos, entre 1898 y 1899, aunque las obras de acabado no

se concluyeron al menos hasta 1903, año en que debieron de realizarse

gran parte de los muebles.

Para el salón principal de la vivienda Gaudí diseñó un conjunto de sofá,

butacas, sillas y taburetes tapizados en seda, construidos con chasis

metálicos dorados y sostenidos sobre patas y montantes de madera.

Pero además de los muebles principales, algunos elementos menores

llaman la atención por su complejidad, sea referida al humor con que son

interpretados algunos estilos de moda entonces, como ocurre con el espejo

"rococó", sea referida a su propia estructura, como las dos perchas que han

llegado hasta nuestros días, una grande, de hierro policromado y madera

en forma de corona, y otra, individual, que es la que aquí nos ocupa, y que

forma parte de las colecciones de la Cátedra Gaudí.

Tal vez esta sea la pieza de mobiliario más pequeña jamás realizada por

Gaudí –25 centímetros de dimensión máxima– y, sin embargo, en ella se

produce y revela toda la complejidad de las obras mayores, para las que

piezas como estas constituyen, precisamente, el banco de pruebas.

Como ocurrirá poco después con muchas de las técnicas del arte de

vanguardia, Gaudí no "inventa" los elementos que necesita para alcanzar

unos fines ya establecidos previamente, sino que los "recolecta" –

literalmente– antes de haber decidido para qué servirán, porque en

realidad todo puede servir para todo. En esta pequeña maravillosa

percha, en fin, se encuentra, en toda su concentrada intensidad, la

esencia última de la mentalidad artística de Gaudí, es decir, de su

"pensamiento salvaje".
