I-196/I-96/ E. Beltline Avenue
Reconstruction and Interchange Reconfiguration
What Is Being Done? The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing approximately $40 million to reconstruct I-196 between Maryland Avenue and M-44 (East Beltline Avenue) and construct two new bridges to reconfigure the I-96/I-196/M-44 interchange. The new configuration will create dedicated exit lanes from eastbound I-96 and I-196 to East Beltline Avenue.
When Will This Be Done?Work has already begun and will continue through the 2020 construction season.
How Will Traffic Be Affected?Lane closures and traffic shifts will be in place through mid-June and then eastbound I-96 will be closed at Leonard Street for approximately five months. Traffic will be detoured onto southbound US-131 to eastbound I-196. The East Beltline Avenue ramps to I-96 and the Leonard Street ramp to eastbound I-96 will be closed intermittently throughout the project.
