This Indian Standard and its part which is identical with ISO 3864-1: 2011 Graphical
symbols — Safety colours and safety signs — Part 1 Design principles for safety signs and
safety markings issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), was
adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Basic Standards
Sectional Committee and approval of the Production and General Engineering Division
Council. The standard is issued in four parts and other parts are as below:
Part 2: Design principles for product safety labels;
Part 3: Design principles for graphical symbols for use in safety signs; and
Part 4: Colorimetric and photometric properties of safety sign materials
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard
without deviations. Certain terminology and conventions are, however, not identical to those
used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the
current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
In the adopted standard, reference appears to following International Standards for which

Amendment No.1 : Revision of Table B.1 issued in 2011 by the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO), will be adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the
recommendation of the Basic Standards Sectional Committee and approval of the Production
and General Engineering Division Council. The standard is issued in four parts and other
parts are as below:
Part 1 Design principles for safety signs and safety markings;
Part 3: Design principles for graphical symbols for use in safety signs; and
Part 4: Colorimetric and photometric properties of safety sign materials

NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard which is identical with ISO 17724:2003 Graphical symbols —
Vocabulary issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), was adopted
by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Basic Standards Sectional
Committee and approval of the Production and General Engineering Division Council.
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard
without deviations. Certain terminology and conventions are, however, not identical to those
used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the
current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.

This Indian Standard which is identical with ISO 23601:2009 Safety identification — Escape
and evacuation plan signs, issued by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO), was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Basic
Standards Sectional Committee and approval of the Production and General Engineering
Division Council.
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard
