CJ’s Principles of Biomedical Sciences class prepared me for the fast-paced tempo of anatomy and chemistry classes in college. Our teachers were caring, but always pushed us to do more. I don’t know how students in college can be successful if they didn’t go to a school that had challenged them. I adapted well.

The PLTW biomedical sciences program provides students with an understanding of biomedical sciences in the modern world and prepares them for careers in this rapidly growing field. Students gain an awareness of the social, legal, and ethical issues surrounding
medical technological advances. Coursework is rigorous with an emphasis on scientific principles and medical
research. Students are exposed to key concepts transferable to many fields.
PLTW biomedical sciences courses provide a broad foundation in science and health care, and include
specialized knowledge in areas of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology,
anatomy, and public health. These courses are taken along with traditional math and science courses that prepare students for success in college. Students reap benefits from taking any number of the PLTW courses.
The program uses a combination of activity, project, and problem-based teaching to engage students as they learn to solve problems, conduct research, analyze data, and learn through working with professionals and professors in the Dayton community and beyond. At registration, students should ask their counselors to sign them up for a PLTW course. Students must take the required science and math courses — proactive planning of a course schedule is essential.

AS A FRESHMAN IN COLLEGE, my daughter was invited to be part of a select pre-med learning group at Ohio University. Out of those 20, she and one other student had the STEMM background and lab expe-rience in high school that allowed them to participate in research lab work — an oppor-tunity normally reserved for upperclassmen! The professors were so impressed and sug-gested that they apply for paid lab positions. We know her success is due to the excellent teachers and opportunities she had at CJ.

Principles of the Biomedical SciencesStudents investigate the medical research processes, biological systems, and various conditions including heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia and infectious diseases. Lifestyle choices and medical treatment options are explored.
Human Body SystemsStudents examine the interactions of body systems as they explore identity, communication, power, movement, protection and homeostasis. Students design experiments, investigate structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions, and study the amazing human machine.
Medical Interventions The course is a how-to manual for maintaining overall health
and homeostasis. Students explore how to prevent and fight infection, screen and evaluate the code in human DNA, prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, and contribute to future interventions using science and engineering.
Biomedical InnovationIn this capstone course, stu-
dents apply their knowledge and skills to answer questions or solve problems related to the biomedical sciences. Students design innovative solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century.
