PBL News

Over the past fortnight, our students focused on ‘pick up and bus line expectations’. Students practised ways that we line up in our correct bus or pick up line. We also focused on the students remaining seated and how we describe our parents to the teacher on duty. Eg. “My mum is at the gate wearing a red shirt and a black cap”, rather than “mum is over there”. We encourage the students to be patient while the teacher is dismissing other students.

The focus for next fortnight is ‘assembly expectations’. Teachers and students will be practising how we walk to and from assembly, and how we sit when we are at assembly. A focus will also be around how we stand during the National Anthem.

We look forward to seeing continued safe, respectful and responsible behaviour being displayed around our school and in particular, at assembly as we have another assembly at the end of term.

As our students have continued to show respectful, responsible and safe behaviour, as a whole school we have reached our first positive behaviour acknowledgement day.

This was held on Thursday, 29th March. Students were invited to wear casual clothes to mark this achievement. It was an exciting day and the students behaved beautifully.

Easter Hat Parade and Easter Raffle

An unseasonably warm Autumn day. A jam packed crowd. Fabulous hats and bunny footprints across the school. The school was alive with anticipation and we were primed for our Easter Hat Parade and Easter Raffle.

The infants students paraded with the fantastically creative hats through the primary cola with the whole primary students, staff and many parents in attendance. They all looked awesome!

Students then performed 2 dances and looked amazing in doing so. They had so much energy and looked to be having so much fun. Well done to all of the students and staff who were involved. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to your performance.

There was a very special visit from the Easter Bunny. He was kind enough to help hand out the prizes in our Easter Raffle. With over 60 prizes he was very busy with lots on his paws.

We were very fortunate to raise over $1200.00 that will go towards purchasing new literacy resources for our school.

Thanks to everyone for your generous donations of chocolate, wrapping materials, baskets and bags. Thank you to anyone who purchased tickets for your contribution to our school. Thank you to Mrs Lemon, Mrs Boyton and Mrs Sullivan for their help in putting together the prizes.

Lachlan Rugby League Trials

On Thursday, 22nd March fifteen students from Forbes Public School travelled to Parkes to trial for the under 11's and Opens Lachlan Region Rugby League side to contest the Western Region trials in Dubbo on 9th April.

All students who participated displayed outstanding sportsmanship and played to the best of their abilities.

The successful students were:

Under 11's:

Riley Mylecharane, Matthew Higgins, Jesse Flick, Sam Schrader, Zac Fraser

Opens:

Jonah Little, Sonny Bevan, Justin Kruger

We wish all boys good luck at the next round of competition.

AFL - Paul Kelly Cup

On Wednesday, 14th March 32 students from Forbes Public travelled to Bathurst to represent the school in Australian Rules Football in the Paul Kelly Cup, the largest AFL primary school competition in New South Wales and the ACT.

The girls team played four games throughout the day, against St Philomena’s Primary School (Bathurst), Catherine McAuley Primary School (Orange), Dubbo South Public School and Holy Family (Bathurst). Although they did not come away with a win, the team played very well together, demonstrating team work and sportsmanship and building upon their skills and knowledge of the game with each match.

The boys teams first game was against Cowra PS. The boys started really well, winning 25 – 18. Their second match was against Catherine McAuley Primary. This game was close with the boys narrowly going down. Their third game was against St Philomena's Primary which the boys won by 4 points. In the final game the boys played Dubbo South PS. Unfortunately, they were defeated.

From the day, two teams were picked to play in a possible versus probables scratch match. Six boys were selected to play, Sonny Bevan, Jonah Little, Reece Kollias, Justin Kruger, Evan Walker and Brock Maynard. From these we had four that were selected to go to the next level and trial for the Western Division team in Parkes on the 1st of April.

Well done to all students that played and represented the school in a very respectful and responsible manner.

Tennis Forbes Public vs Parkes Public

On Friday, 23rd March the Forbes Public School Tennis Team competed in their first knock out round against Parkes Public School. This was held at Parkes Town Tennis Courts.

The selected team was Michael Behan, Hugh Chudleigh, Holly Young and Scarlett Francis. It was a fun filled day and all students represented our school outstandingly.

Congratulations to Michael for a well-deserved win in the boys singles, winning 6-1. The boys doubles also came away with a win 6-1. Well done to Holly and Scarlett for their amazing sportsmanship, against tough opponents. Hugh also represented our school with pride, going down 7-5 in a very competitive game. Both the mixed doubles teams were unfortunately defeated but all players improved over the course of the day.

After a fantastic day of tennis Parkes Public School were the overall winners and will progress to the next round. Well done to all team members of the Forbes Public School Tennis Team! You should be very proud of your efforts on the court and the way you represented our school.

Th an k you to Michelle Behan and Lee Young for driving students to the game. Your support is much appreciated.

Lives lost on NSW roads. Our goal is zero.

Keeping your children safe when dropping off and picking up at schoolHere are a few things you can do to help keep your children and others safer during drop-off and pick-up times during the school week:

• Make sure your children are fastened in the correct child car seat for their age and size and that it is fitted correctly.

• Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone and look out for children who may be about.

• Watch for flashing lights on buses. They let you know that there may be children crossing or about to cross the road. A 40km/h limit applies when school bus lights flash.

• Always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.

• Always park and turn legally around schools. Manoeuvres such as U-turns and three-point turns are dangerous during busy school drop-off and pick-up times.

• Drop your children off and pick them up on the school side of the road in your school’s designated drop-off and pick-up area. Never call out to them from across the road – they may run to you without checking for traffic.

• It’s safest for children to get out of the car through the Safety Door, away from passing traffic. This is the rear footpath side door of the car.

For more information on keeping our kids safe around schools visit the parents section on safetytown.com.au

Tell Them From Me student survey:

Information and consent form for parents and carers

Dear Parents and Carers

In Term 1 2018, our school is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys.

Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating students will receive a unique username and password. Where fewer than five students respond to a question, the results will be suppressed. The survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours. Once the surveys are completed by students, reports are prepared and in most cases are available to schools within three business days.

As well as schools getting student feedback, the Department of Education, through the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE), has access to data from across NSW and is running a research project to look at state-wide patterns of student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. The research is looking at how these things impact on student outcomes, including academic performance. Individual students will not be identified in any CESE publications, and all information will be handled in accordance with the relevant privacy legislation. Students’ personal information will not be disclosed by the department to any other person or body other than as required by law.

This research will help schools in New South Wales to better understand how to improve student wellbeing and engagement. It will also help teachers and principals discuss what works to improve student outcomes.

Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped.

If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form and return it to the school by Monday the 9th of April.

More information about the survey and the research is available in English on the CESE website: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents
