Calgary (pronounced /klri, klri/) is the largest city in the Province of Alberta, Canada.

The Calgary census metropolitan area (CMA) is the third most diverse in Canada in terms ofvisible minorities after Toronto and Vancouver when considering only CMAs with population

greater than 200,000. It is located in the south of the province, in an area of foothills and highplains, approximately 80 km (50 mi) east of the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies. The city

is located in the Parkland region of Alberta. Calgary is the third largest civic municipality, bypopulation in Canada, and is also an emerging global city. According to the GaWC, Calgary is a

"gamma negative world city."

In the Canada 2006 Census, the city had a population of 988,193 and the CMA had a populationof 1,079,310. As of the 2009 civic census, Calgary's population was 1,065,455 and the CMA

had a population of 1,182,446.

Greater Calgary is the fifth largest CMA in the country after Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, andOttawa. Located 300 km (200 mi) due south of Edmonton, statisticians define the narrow popu-

PESTICIDE BYLAW MEETING

The city has begun a series of open houses to talk aboutpesticide use and whether there should be a total ban onthe chemicals in Calgary.

The first meeting was held Wednesday night in a crowdedbanquet room at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino. Both sup-

porters and opponents of a pesticide ban were among thedozens who attended.

The city is considering phasing outthe cosmetic use of pesticides on

public land by 2010, and private

land by 2011. CRAIG GIRDOTlooked over information poster

boards with a grim expression on hisface. He runs a lawn fertilizer andpesticide company with eight trucksin his fleet and argues that no pesti-cides will mean many more weeds.

" There's going to be more this year, more next yearand pretty soon your lawn will be covered in them,"hesaid. " Sure, people can dig them out, but can youimagine the city trying to dig out weeds ? The labourforce just isn't there."

BRENDA HARRIS, a worker in the weed control industry,said pesticide control is not a city hall issue.

" Pesticides are an emotional issue, but they are regu-lated by Health Canada,"she said. " They look at a lotof scientific data and they make a decision on thesafety of the product."

But EVIE RODWAY, of the Canadian Cancer Society, islooking for a" very strong bylaw ".

" What that means is a bylawthat doesn't leave much roomfor exceptions. So we wouldlike to see all cosmetic use use for cosmetic purposes to be banned."

The city is considering phasing out the cosmetic use of pes-ticides on public land by2010, and private land by2011.City administrators are expected to have a pesticide use by-

law ready for council to debate by the END OF OCTOBER.
