According to Peter Shawn Taylor in the National Post in midMay [ 2010 ]

Taylor, who termed the McGuinty governments decision to implement the banas entirely political , and says that weeds in Ontario are here to stay FOREVER. He describes the ban as an enormous deadweight loss for the prov-ince.

Kim Mackrael, in an article in the Guelph Mercury in May[ 2010 ], reported thatthe lawns, parks and sports fields in that Ontario city were teeming with dan-delions . In the article, the reporter quoted a couple that said they kept thedandelions out of their yard by plucking weeds out by hand, and by sprayingthem with [ an i l legal ] mixture of salt, vinegar and dish detergent.

Seasonal workers mow the city parks once every 10 business days in an at-tempt to CHOP THE HEADS OFF OF THE DANDELIONS BEFORE THEY GO TO SEED .

A city official is quoted in the article as saying that city residents are just goingto have to get used to weeds in their parks. He described the weedy parks as the new esthetic.

Meanwhile, across the country on Canadas West Coast, in Vancouver and sur-rounding communities in Brit ish Columbia province, European Chafer Beetles,MILLIONS OF THEM, did a number on home lawns, parks and sports fields.

A lawn care professional in the town ofSurrey said damage was in the MILLIONS,

and the lawns looked like a Rototiller attacked them.

He was describing the damage caused by skunks, raccoons and birds that duginto the ground to feast on the chafer grubs.

Common lawn pesticides are banned in many of the communities suffering thegrub damage, butNematodes and other biofriendly treatments are allowed.

Where these dont work, property owners are faced with the prospect of reno-vating or replacing their lawns entirely.

An environmental officer in one of the communities suggested in April [ 2010 ]that homeowners allow their lawns to growth to five to eight centimetres, which

will help stop the beetles from laying their eggs in the soil. [ Wrong ! ]

He said a grass lawn with a mix of clover would lessen egg laying, as well.[ Wrong ! ]

Commentary Admittedly, the practice of increasing the mowing height willimprove turf health, allowing it to be more resilient and better tolerate pestinvasion. But increasing the mowing height WILL NOT get rid of White Grublarvae, nor will it discourage them from targeting a home lawn or a golf fair-way. This practice is INEFFECTIVE for controlling White Grub larvae.

BIOLOGICAL PEST CONTROL NEMATODE PRODUCTS

EntomoPathogenic Nematode products CANNOT be consistently consideredas a true alternative to conventional insecticides, since insect pests, like WhiteGrub larvae, are often only suppressed and NOT controlled by Nematodes.Furthermore, not every species of EntomoPathogenic Nematode will beequally effective against a particular insect pest.

Laboratory and field tests tend to indicate that the best species of Nematodesprovide only MODERATE CONTROL, or SUPPRESSION, where up to fifty tosixtyfive per cent of the damaging insect population is killed. Other Nema-tode species have been show to provide INEFFECTIVE CONTROL, with SUP-
