Three solar minima occurred during the Little Ice Age, 13501850, the longest of these, the Maunder Minimum, starting in1625, and lasting almost a century with very few sun spots.

The Maunder Minimum was followed by a smaller event, theDalton Minimum, from 17901835.

The sun now has had 750 sun spot free days, the longest qui-escent state in the last two hundred years, with characteris-

tics virtually identical to the onset of the Dalton Minimum,which was a period of extremely cold winters, freezing majorrivers, such as the Thames, Hudson, and the Mississippi 200miles south of St. Louis.

THOUSANDS of turf managers and technicians. Mr. Gathercole has also been an agricultural agronomist. For manyyears, Mr. Gathercole was a contributing columnist for TURF & Recreation Magazine, Canadas Turf and Grounds

Mr. Gathercole has followed the evolution of ENVIRONMENTALTERRORISM for over a quartercentury. His in-
