    Derives from the word libido

    Is present right from our birth

    Manifests itself onlyin the unconscious

    Guides the instinctive and primitive behaviours, such as aggressisex drive

    The id is driven by the pleasure principle, and seeks instant gratiall desires, wants and needs. If these desires are not satisfied ima state of anxiety follows.

    Satisfying such needs immediately isnt always possible

    So, the id tries to resolve the anxiety created as a result through primary process, by forming a mental image of the desired objecof satisfying the need.

    The Ego

    The ego is the component of the personality that is responsible for dealing w

    Acc. to Freud, the ego develops from the idand ensuresthat the impulses obe expressed in a manner acceptable in the real world.

    It functions in the conscious, the preconscious as well as the unconscious

    The ego operates based on the reality principle, which strives to satisfy the irealistic and socially appropriate ways.

    The reality principle weighs the costs and benefits of an action before decidupon or abandon impulses.

    In many cases, the ids impulses can be satisfied through delayed gratificatioego will eventually allow the behavior, but only at the appropriate time and

    The ego also discharges tension-created by unmet impulses-through thesecprocess, in which the ego tries to find an object in the real world that matchmental image formed in the ids primary process

    The Superego

    The Superego is the aspect of our personality that holds all of our internalizestandards and ideals which we acquire from both our parents and society-insense of right and wrong

    It provides guidelines for making judgments

    Acc. to Freud, it begins to emerge at around the age of five

    It has two parts: The ego ideal: Rules and standards which we bear in mind, which we know shall be construed
