I’m a bit of a TV commercial junkie. In the late 70s, Heinz ketchup
had an ad campaign called “Anticipation.” Set to a cheesy 70s jingle, it
featured people watching Heinz ketchup slowly pour out of the bottle.
The tagline for the ad was “worth the wait.”
I sang that jingle in my head all spring as we worked to complete
our capital projects.
Now, with the majority of the construction in the rearview mirror,
it’s fun to look out and see the results. This summer we’ve seen record
enrollment in our School of Sport, pools filled with kids, full signups
for golf events and lots of new members. I can’t thank everyone enough
for your patience and encouragement during our construction, and
especially those who sat on planning committees.
I hope you’ll all agree with Rocky Krsnich, our cover poster child,
that it truly was “worth the wait.” Enjoy!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Meet Patricia “Patty” Malone, my right-hand gal and the newest addition
to the WCC team! New membership is booming and we recognized
there was a need to focus on membership as a whole, so Patty is here
to save the day! She will be your go-to contact as the new Member
Relations coordinator.
While new members are extremely important and keep the Club fresh
and vibrant, tradition and longtime family ties here at WCC are the glue
to our culture and values. They are what make us the incredible Club
we are, and have been, for over 116 years. Wow! 116 years. That is truly
something to be proud of!
In this issue we focus on those family ties. You’ll meet our newest
members, Heather Bowman and Tobin Acebedo. Heather gave herself
the gift of WCC membership after winning her battle against breast
cancer. Heather and Tobin have quite the story and are pretty darn
amazing! We also have some adorable pictures from our School of Sport,
which, by the way, doubled in participation this year. And we’ll update
you on our youngest Club leaders, the junior board!
If you haven’t seen her running around yet, Patty has been busy
taking pictures of all the current Club events and is breathing new
life into our social media. You can find “Wichita Country Club” on
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to keep up to date with all the
latest Club happenings. Also, feel free to email Patty at pmalone@
wichitacountryclub.org with any pictures you have from your own Club
experiences and watch for them to make appearances in our marketing
and media throughout the year!
You can’t miss Patty’s contagious smile or her infectious Canadian
“eh?” when you see her around the Club. Be sure to say hello!
Read Heather’s story on page 8.Flip to page 6 to find out what’s keeping the Junior Board busy.

They’re on a roll now! Last issue, we introduced you to the Club’s junior
board, comprised of members between 10 and 18. Our young superstars
had their first official junior board meeting Thursday, June 9. The
business at hand included a conversation about why the junior board
was formed, the expectations and responsibilities of each junior board
member and a discussion of several events the junior board would like
to see at the Club in the future.
As a reminder, our junior board members will serve a two-year term
and meet quarterly to discuss upcoming projects, activities and events
at the Club.
The WCC junior board was created for three main reasons:
• To help build new and exciting programs for the Club’s youth.
• To gain valuable leadership experience while having a positive impact
on the Club.
• To create, innovate and develop the youth experience at WCC.
If you have questions about the junior board, please feel free to
contact Mike Rittmueller at [email protected].
Mike has taken on the role of WCC Kids’ Ambassador and is working
with the junior board to make sure the Club experience is as fulfilling
as possible for our families and their kids.

THE FUTURE OF WCC

WEST BY SOUTHWESTWELCOME EXECUTIVE CHEF GRAHAM ZANOW!
“Cooking is all about celebrating the best ingredients.”—Executive Chef Zanow
FOOD & BEVERAGE
We just hired a rock star.
New Executive Chef Graham Zanow has a long history of culinary
excellence and experience wowing the country club circuit. He’s
served executive chef roles at FireRock Country Club and Mirabel
Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Tuckaway Country Club in
Franklin, Wisconsin. More street cred, he was personal chef to the
NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks and executive chef at Napa Valley Country
Club in California.
While in Napa, Zanow was chef and owner of Graham’s Catering
for six years, handling elite dinner parties and banquets for some of
the area’s most prestigious clients. His impressive culinary résume also
includes working at the world famous The French Laundry restaurant
in Napa Valley.
“The kitchen at The French Laundry was without question one of
the greatest experiences of my career. It enabled me to work with some
of the most elite ingredients from around the world and develop some
unique sauces that are in many of my dishes today,” says Zanow, who
learned many of his culinary techniques while
interning for Roy Yamaguchi and his
world-famous Roy’s restaurant
in Maui, Hawaii.
“It was at Roy’s that I experienced the most ‘epic’ fresh fish I have
ever seen,” he says. “I thrived in the high pace of Roy’s that served on
average 400 meals a day and taught me numerous cooking techniques
and flavor combinations that I still use to this day. This is what cooking
is all about, celebrating the best ingredients.”
Chef Zanow joins us mid July along with his wife Andrea and sons,
Miles, 7 and Grayson, 2. The Zanows, both graduates of the Culinary
Institute of America, have a deep passion for excellent food made with
top-quality ingredients.
When asked how he feels about moving to Wichita Country Club,
Chef Zanow replied, “The Club’s long and rich history is most attractive
to me. A stable work environment is crucial for me right now. I want to
be part of a club with stability and growth in an area where I can enjoy
a good quality lifestyle with my family. “Wichita Country Club is in a safe and quiet area for me to raise my
children. Family is everything to me and since I work so many hours I need piece of mind that my family is in a community that offers a good quality of life.
“Also, I believe I can put the Club on the map with my cuisine.”

Sometimes you meet someone whose story stays with you forever, the
way a favorite movie or novel might. Heather Bowman’s story will make
you laugh, cry and want to hear it over and over again.
WCC members for just a few short months, Heather and her
longtime beau, Tobin Acebedo, have jumped right into Club life.
Notable for this contagious couple, they recently hit the course together
for the first time since Heather’s reconstructive surgery after a yearlong
battle with breast cancer.
Heather is one of the most genuine and kind people you may ever
meet, and just behind her radiating warmth is an ocean of strength and
confidence. Of her battle with stage 2 breast cancer, she says simply, “I’m
lucky.” Aside from the cancer, she was healthy, and going into treatment
she had Tobin and a never-ending support system of friends.
In her words:“I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer on April 1, 2015. Yep,
April Fools! But unfortunately it was not a practical joke. I wasn’t even
surprised when I was diagnosed since my mom, sister and first cousin
all have gone through this. So, it was just my time.
“My breast surgeon, oncologist and reconstructive surgeon were
amazing. My surgery was in June. I started chemo in late July and
finished in November. My final reconstructive surgery was in January of
this year. Anyone who has gone through this knows that right after the
initial surgery you end up seeing the reconstructive surgeon the most.
“Doctors really know what they are doing when it comes to treating
breast cancer. Treatment has come so far, and we can only hope that the
same knowledge and advancements can now be made for other cancers.”
A lawyer at Koch, Heather is on the board of the Great Plains Nature
Center. She loves to garden and stays fit with standup paddleboarding,
kayaking and walking the couple’s Australian cattle dog, Lolo.
Paying it forwardShe also stays busy doing what she calls paying it forward. Using
her own battle as inspiration to help others and fighting for a cure to
cancer are her passions. Today, she volunteers for the Pancreatic Cancer
Advocacy Network as the local community advocate. In that capacity,
she recently flew to Washington DC to increase awareness for research
and funding for pancreatic cancer. She explained to the crowd that
within weeks of her diagnosis of breast cancer her doctors had a plan for
treatment options. Heartbreakingly the opposite, she shared, her father
passed just 26 short days after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Heather and Tobin choose to be optimistic about their journey
together.
“The hardest thing for me last year was to slow down, listen to
the doctors, take it easy after chemo and not expect to be able to do
everything that I did before. That’s where Tobin and our friends were
so amazing to step in and help. I really couldn’t have gotten through all
of that without their support. Yep, I am lucky.”
Last year, Heather
Bowman battled breast
cancer and her beau’s
mother passed away
after a short fight with
lung cancer. Heather
says “that kind of put
a lot into perspective
for us. Many of the
people who were
amazingly supportive
of us throughout 2015
are members here
at WCC. When we
decided it was time
to do something for
ourselves and no longer
put things off or make
excuses, the choice to
join WCC was clear.”
9
Tobin puts it this way: “Heather is truly an inspiring person and I
count my blessings each day to have her in our lives. The way she goes
about living life and enjoying each day with her positive outlook never
ceases to amaze me.”
It’s members like Heather, Tobin and Kylie that make WCC so
exceptional, and we are happy to welcome them. When you run into
these three you better be quick on your feet and ready for a few good
laughs.

OUR LITTLE SLICE OF
WHAT MEMBERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE NEW WCC POOL
“It’s like being at the Wynn Hotel in Vegas!”
Bob Burgess
“Best oasis in Wichita.”
Kate Bastian
“The new pools make me so happy!”
Georgia VonCannon, age 5
“Mom, it is like being on vacation without having to pack and travel!”
Bella Cunningham, age 8
“The new pools are AMAZING, the slide is AWESOME, and the
lifeguards are SO nice!”
Tilly VonCannon, age 9
“We absolutely love the pool and the staff that make every day so
relaxing and fun.”
Linzett Cunningham
“I am happy to say that the new pool facilities have assured our
position of being the best club in the region! They are a giant step
forward compared with our 1950 pool and the green algae pool at
the old club. Congratulations and thanks to the board and all the
members who have been involved.”
Dick West
“I began enjoying the pool in the early 70s when my son was little.
He learned to swim here and eventually progressed to dives off the
high board. Happy memories and tradition made me question the
need for a new facility, but what we have now is magical. Joyful new
fun awaits when my two grandsons visit this summer. I can’t wait!”
Judy Weatherall
“I’ve never seen so many smiling faces at WCC in my lifetime! Congrats to the members for making the new pool complex a reality.”
Tom Dondlinger13
STEPPING BACK.
Our newly renovated classic golf course may indeed entice us into
thinking we’ve stepped back into the glory days of the 1950s. Friends,
please don’t be deceived. It’s every bit of 280 yards to carry the new
pot bunker on nine from the plates—try that with your father’s oil-
hardened MacGregor persimmon!
Thanks to the vision of our board of directors, leadership of the
long-range planning committee, expertise and imagination of golf course
architect, Tripp Davis, and the incredible hard work of Brian White
and his team and subcontractors, we are now the proud proprietors of
a true modern classic golf course.
From Bermuda to Better Billy Bunkers our playing surfaces fashion
a palette that’s pleasing to the eye, easily trod, nuanced and open to
imagination and interpretation and fortified to the point of requiring
every available micron of modern aerodynamics.
“What a privilege and pleasure it is to play our wonderful golf course,”
says Marilyn Tilton. Dr. and Mrs. Tilton are long-time Wichita Country
Club members and big fans of the recent renovations. “The changes are
impressive and I believe golfers of every age and skill level will really have
fun playing it and be challenged in new ways.”
14
Perfect practice. The addition of the Better Billy Bunker and Bermuda grass
surrounds will help all of us better transfer our practice sessions to
actual course playing conditions. Emma Whitaker, WCC member and
future Oklahoma State University golfer, put a big exclamation point
on this concept as she holed her first attempt from the green surround
on hole number four during the photo shoot for this addition of the
ForeCast. Perfect practice makes perfect, right Emma?
Walk this way.A great walk just got way better. We’ve always enjoyed a very walker-
friendly golf course—according to Garmin®, our 18-hole loop measures
right at 5.25 miles. The new walking paths from tee to fairway are not
only a beautiful finishing detail, they make the trek more manageable
than ever before.
Even better news, Arin Benjamin, WCC fitness professional, says we
can count walking a round of golf as one of our needed cardio workouts
for the week!
15
A sandy paradox. They’re easy on the eye—outlining our strategies, framing our lines
of play. And yet they’re fodder for nightmares and tormented and
sleepless nights—visions of plugged and severe lies, random foozles,
fluffs and skulls. (Once overheard on the golf course: “I don’t often hit
my sand wedge 200 yards. But when I do, it’s usually from a greenside
bunker!”)
We have 54 brand new bunkers. They are beautiful and they can be
diabolical. And it’s all a matter of perspective and how you approach
them. Brooks Wiebe, PGA professional, recommends approaching with
a quiet mind, not judging good or bad. “We need to take fear out of our
bunker play,” says Wiebe. “We need to free ourselves to see our best
chance to advance the ball and reduce the possibility of compounding
our situation. Too often we try to do too much—try to hit the hero
shot.”
Brooks recommends those of us with bunker phobia select one less
club than we think we need from fairway bunkers (if you think you can
clear the lip with a 6-iron, choose a 7-iron instead) and play greenside
bunker shots to the lowest part of the green to give ourselves a chance
at an uphill saving putt.
As always, our PGA professional golf staff is here to help replace the
mystery and fear of bunker play with mastery and courage. Call or stop
by the golf shop and schedule a personal lesson or watch for clinics and
group instructional opportunities.
Stewarding resources.Recent rains qualify WCC to be the new poster-boy for the Better
Billy Bunker concept. The new bunkers stood up to torrential rains
recently with only very minimal washout, except, of course, the bunkers
that were completely submerged. “If we had a rain like that in the past,
every bunker on the course would have been demolished and it would
have taken weeks to repair them,” remarked Brian White, golf course
superintendent. “Believe it our not, the Better Billy system is designed
to allow up to 1,500 inches of water to pass through its polymer binder
in an hour.”
Speaking of water...the Club is already reaping the benefits of having
to add less water to the Bermuda grass tees and rough. Water bills
are trending downward from previous years and these grasses require
minimal chemical input as well. White believes WCC has taken a
significant step forward in being respectful of our resources and the
environment with our recent renovations.
Wichita Country Club has stood the test of time and has become a
true modern classic golf course—one of the best in our region. When
you factor in the unparalleled service, unexpected amenities and a
community-of-friends environment, we believe WCC is setting the
standard for a world-class golf experience.
16
“The objective with the work recently completed at Wichita Country Club was focused on three
main ideas. The first was to enhance the ability of the grounds maintenance team to provide
the best playing quality through use of better materials—materials that allow for the same or
less maintenance input and produce a consistently higher-quality playing field. The second was
to enhance the strategic quality of the course for all players. The updated golf course requires
more thought from all players, with the intent to challenge stronger players and provide options
for the average player to choose more playable routes to the hole. The key is for each player to
assess his/her strengths and weaknesses and make good choices in the interest of playing each
hole in the fewest shots. And third, we focused on giving the course a more classic look tied to
its architectural lineage so it looks and feels like a step back in time.”

Wichita Country Club member Matt Wright and WCC tennis
professional Lucy Kovalova brought home the gold this past April in the
first ever US Open Pickleball Championships in Naples, Florida. Our
pesky professional pickleballers won the 19 and over mixed doubles
championship and competed strongly in the mixed pro open, losing
only to the eventual tournament champs.
Kovalova, a former WSU tennis player who also finished second in
the women’s pro open event, says, “It was such a wonderful experience.
The atmosphere, the audience and the players were phenomenal. I can’t
wait to compete again next year!” Wright, a former collegiate tennis
player at the University of Michigan, and fellow Wichitan Jack Oxler
also competed in the men’s doubles event.
Pickleball is for everyone! You don’t have to be a pickleball pro. WCC has three indoor
pickleball courts and all the equipment you need to get started. “It’s
fun,” encourages WCC tennis legend Roc Platt. “It’s fast-paced and
it’s easy on the joints. You serve underhand, so all of us old guys with
shoulder pain can get back in the game.”
Call or stop by the Tennis and Fitness Center soon and get involved in this exciting new sport!
19
School was most definitely in session and this first summer
of School of Sport rocked! The kids of WCC came excited
to learn and ready to take their swimming, tennis and golf
skills to the next level. Scores of kids were enrolled in the
action-packed, three-hour sessions every Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday. The coaches agree, these kids
are ready to go for the gold: 111 bettered their stroke in
the pool, 174 strengthened their slam on the courts and
136 perfected their swing on the fairway.
20
GATORS FINISH ON TOP FOR THE THIRD YEAR RUNNING!In the season finale, our Gators celebrated a third, consecutive Greater
Wichita Swim League team title this summer, prompting the call of
“#3peat” among all swimmers. And for the first time ever the WCC
senior team (ages 11 and up) also finished on top of the nine-team
league. “Our former, winning junior swimmers years stuck with the
Gators to dominate as senior swimmers,” says Randy McVay, WCC
head coach and aquatics director.
Not to be outdone, “our junior team has had a very successful run,”
says McVay. “I don’t believe it’s lost a meet since 2004 or 2005.”
WCC has historically had a large swim team, but this year the
Gators had 111 swimmers ages 3-18. When asked if the large number
of swimmers helps with the success of the team, Coach Randy said,
“The way swim meets are scored makes things equal for large and small
teams. We just have some terrific athletes and swimmers.”
WCC would like to thank Emily Thengvall, Morgan Overman,
Karen Strecker and Kim Haag for tireless coordination of swim team
activities and volunteers; planning for the season began in February.
Coach Randy thanks WCC swim team moms, assistant coaches,
parents and swimmers for taking the time to support and participate.
“I know summers are busy. Most of our swimmers do not swim year
around, so this is a fun way for WCC kids to be social and active which
is what summer is all about! Our families are really very dedicated to
the success of our team,” says McVay.

SUMMER OF ’65As a third-generation member, I have so many fond memories, I could
write another book about WCC. After seeing our beautiful, new
resort-like swimming pool, a memory came to me. In the summer of
1965, my friend Jim Knightley and I water skied across the old WCC
swimming pool going from the south end to the north end being pulled
by a Cushman motor cart.

Wichita Country Club has a rich and storied history which informs our current culture and traditions. As we move forward as the premier private
