Who the Fuck is Kafka
L i t e R a R y F i C t i o n
Hatred is an emotion, but peace is a conscious decision
A hotel in Rome. There’s a knock at Lizzie Doron’s door; when she opens it, she thinks she finds herself confronted by an Arab suicide bomber wearing an explosives belt. In fact Nadim has merely stuck his travel documents to the waistband of his trousers with black adhesive tape.
Such is the first encounter between the Israeli author Lizzie Doron and the Palestinian-Arab journalist Nadim, an encounter that marks the beginning of an eventful roller-coaster of a friendship that will drive them to breaking point time and again. They both live in different buildings of the same madhouse: Lizzie carries a baggage-load of Holocaust, while Nadim is weighed down by the memory of al-Nakba (the great disaster) – the tragic consequences of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
• an Israeli writer tells the story of a Palestinian journalist who wants to make a film about her
• a tense juxtaposition of two inner and outer worlds, the confrontation of two different cultures – and a search for common ground
• a story about steadfastness and sense of justice

“Who the Fuck is Kafka? is essential reading for anyone trying to get to grips with the Israeli-Palestinian relation-ship in all its contradictions and complexity.” ORF Ex libris

The Book of Impositions
We really oughtn’t drive. It’s too undemanding. But are we not constantly exposed to all sorts of minor irritations on the train as well? Do we just need to turn a deaf ear more often? What’s happened to common courtesy? Can an artist be badly dressed? Why is mediocrity so often a success?
Stefan aus dem Siepen takes an impish look at the modern world. In a series of brief reflections and anecdotes, he considers the critical factors that prevent us from enjoying a pleasant and comfortable life. He examines the absurdity rampant in modern art, the farcical aspects of culture and the contrariness of everyday life.
A book about impositions – the journal of a true flaneur – funny, poignant, sometimes provocative.

YORCK KRONENBERG
Yorck Kronenberg was born in 1973. He studied piano and composition in Lübeck. As a pianist, he won the International JS Bach Competition in Saarbrücken in 1998. He has also received numerous awards for his literary work, including bursaries from the Lower Saxony Foundation, the Ahrenshoop Lukas Artists’ Residence and the Berlin Literary Colloquium.
Anton, an elderly professor of literature from Frankfurt, owns a house on the English coast. One day it is burgled, and although no harm comes to him or his wife, he feels sick at heart and overcome with a sense of impotence. Increasingly he finds himself thinking back to his childhood in 1940s Germany. Anton’s father, an unemployed violinist, despised Nazism, but the regime met with considerable support in the neighbourhood – and indeed with Anton’s grandparents. Unaware of the magnitude of his action, the boy denounced his father to a neighbour.
One sleepless night, driven by haunting memories and visions from his childhood, Anton leaves his house. His walk takes him along the coast – and becomes a wrestling match with his inner demons.
Atmospherically charged and profoundly compelling, Yorck Kronenberg’s novel describes the life-long effects of a tragic childhood.

Nikolaus Breuel, born in 1960, is a businessman living in Berlin. A few years ago he began to write as an adjunct to his work. Berlin, Palace Square
L i t e R a R y F i C t i o n
A German MP on a field trip finds himself stranded on an island in the middle of the North Sea.Far from the machinations of the capital, life and politics take on a very different perspective.
Meanwhile in Berlin there are plans afoot to build a vast aquatic complex right next to the palace square – Berlin’s famous Schlossplatz. A date has already been set for the opening, but the building is far from finished. There’s a mess of pipes, but nobody knows where they lead to. Legislation, major projects, the world situation at large – the stranded MP is responsible for it all. He believes in truth and the power of right; he wants to make the world a better place. But somehow everything is going awry – with the panel of directors, in parliament and politics in general.
An absolute rarity in German literature: a literary novel written by an executive who knows the nitty-gritty of politics inside out.

“Once one has been a woman in Paris, one cannot be it anywhere else.”Montesquieu
Rive Droite, the 1st Arrondissement, one of the most venerable and most elegant neighbourhoods right in the heart of Paris, between Place Vendôme and the Tuileries Gardens. In 38 brief chapters, Julie Mebes shows us her very own Paris. She takes us to her favourite tea room and leads us through the lesser-known side streets and large boule-vards. She makes us marvel at tame goats in the Tuileries and at German tourists taking snapshots in the Louvre. We are queuing in her supermarket and are invited to a writers’ seminar. We join her at her writing desk at the window in her small apartment and get to know her neighbours. Julie Mebes depicts how Parisians succeed in mastering everyday life with great elegance – and how easy life in Paris is for a woman.
A book about the joys and charms of Parisian life. Makes one want to leave for Paris. Tout de suite. For good.

Emilia Capelli und Mai Zhou ermitteln
A little boy calls the police emergency line; he’s in shock and facing extreme danger. Young, as different as chalk and cheese, professional to the core, with a first-rate track record: the third spellbinding case for inve-stigative duo Emilia Capelli and Mai Zhou.

Hannah O’Brien is a journalist and author who lived in Great Britain and Ireland for many years but now divides her time between homes in Cologne and on the banks of the Moselle. A regular visitor to Ireland, she is an expert on Irish affairs.
Ole Kristiansen read media studies and American and English Literature; he now works as a freelance translator and writing coach in Hamburg. He is currently working on his doctorate which focuses on the literary mechanisms of suspense, horror and mystery.
When her uncle dies, young Hamburg-based journalist Katja Jakobs inherits a small patch of woodland in the North German provinces. On her first visit there, she comes across the ruins of an old farm estate and makes a gruesome discovery – the remains of a young man who has obviously had his skull smashed in. The case dates back to a dark period in the village history – the 1970s, when children and teenagers kept disappearing in the notorious forest until one day the nightmare ended as swiftly as it had begun. The mystery of the vanished children was never solved, the children never found.
Volume three of Ole Kristiansen’s Elements series, a realistic thriller on the hot topic of fracking!
Press acclaim for The Winds of Death:“A riveting finale caps an incredibly gripping thriller with multi-faceted characters, a dark and broody setting and a plot that is anything but predictable.” Wiener Zeitung

Marlies Ferber was born in 1967 and studied sinology. She worked as an editor – with a license to kill typos and adverbs – and now lives in the Ruhr Valley with her husband and two children, working as a freelance author and translator. Her favourite Bond is Sean Connery, and she makes no bones about the fact that it was him – the one and only true Bond – she had in mind when she came up with the idea for this series.
Former secret agent James Gerald and his girlfriend Sheila are looking forward to a peaceful run-up to Christmas at home in London. But it’s not to be; Sheila’s friend Rosalind is brutally murdered while taking a walk in a graveyard!
Without letting on to Sheila, James immediately embarks on investigations; to his horror, everything seems to suggest she was the intended victim. To make matters worse, her shady childhood friend has parked himself on her for the festive season. James senses danger of the highest magnitude – while Sheila’s only concern is the impending Christmas festivities …
70-year old James and vivacious Sheila prove once again they’re far from past their sell-by date in either love or life.

Gabriele
KATHARINA MÜNK
Roman
Katharina Münk is a PA and the author of “And Tomorrow I’ll Kill Him! My Life as a PA to Top Management“(2006), which became a bestseller overnight.
Richard Westermann is an IT executive with a tendency to brood and a penchant for cemeteries. At a funeral, Westermann falls in love with the deceased author’s portable typewriter. And so the machine – an old Gabriele model – becomes an essential part of his life.
When Westermann finds himself saddled with a young and excessively ambitious “data executive”, he strikes a counter-blow by exchanging his computer for Gabriele. His corporate colleagues consider this an ingenious diversionary tactic – he’s supposed to be working on the development of a cryptography box. In no time at all Westermann and his “Gabriele” turn the daily routine in the whole firm on its head. As he immerses himself in his decelerated analogue world, his 80-year-old mother Yolanda embarks on the opposite path: she goes online and discovers the internet.
A declaration of love for the “good old days” – full of nostalgia, spirit and humour.

Caro Martini studied English and German literature in Leipzig and London. Addicted to books from an early age, she eventually decided to start writing them herself.
Lucie may be drop-dead gorgeous and utterly charming, but she lacks orientation in life, love and motoring. When she buys a second-hand sat-nav at the local flea market, the seller hands it to her with the words “may you reach your destination”. A bit much, thinks Lucie – it’s just a sat-nav for God’s sake!
But the very first time she uses it, it greets her personally, saying “Hi Lucie, where do you want to go today?”, then proceeds to guide her in a friendly but resolute manner – everywhere except her specified destination! If Lucie’s life was disorganised before, it’s totally off the rails now; but the mysterious apparatus with the George Clooney voice seems to know just where her happi-ness is lying in store …
A delightful story about one girl’s meandering journey through life – with a dash of magic.

Oskar an Bord ULRIKE HERWIG
Roman
Ulrike Herwig taught German in London for ten years before moving to Seattle with her family in 2001. She spends every free moment at her desk, at which she has written several successful novels.
Tina and Markus have been married for almost twenty years and their love has seen better days. Markus is so weighed down by the grinding routine of everyday life and his eternal money worries that one day he finally blows a fuse, and without thinking twice holds up a petrol station.
Tina witnesses the hold-up completely by chance and is shocked to the core. In a panic, the two of them make their escape in the first vehicle they can get their hands on – which happens to be an ambulance, of all things. Little do they know they have 87-year-old Oskar on board – but Oscar turns out to be a very shrewd former small-time criminal who has all sorts of tricks up his sleeve that come in rather handy for the latter-day Bonnie and Clyde. What follows is a heady flight as the oddly-matched trio embarks on the adventure of a lifetime …

Ellen (45), Kim (16), Rosa (70), Robert (69), Konrad (72), Justus (22), and Hans (50). What do these people have in common? They live together – for very different reasons and not entirely of their own volition. They are squatting a dilapidated villa and doing their best to get used to the new circumstances in their own unique ways. Two of them are mothers who don’t always manage to understand their children; two are daughters who only very rarely get on with their mothers. Two aren’t what they claim to be – and one of them isn’t really there at all. Some are in love, and one has to die. There are plenty of secrets afoot – and it’s not always the butler that did it.
Three female protagonists whose hearts are in the right place: clever, offbeat and sometimes rather cheeky.

Leben im Netz:Wie das Internet uns ver@ndert
Dr. Catarina Katzer is an economist and social psychologist. A pioneer in the field of cyber-psychology, she is now a leading researcher in the field. She works as a specia-list consultant for European Council committees, the German parliament as well as various government institutions at home and abroad.
Omnipotence or impotence – and the space between …
There are nearly 2,5 billion people online by now. The virtual world has become a living, breathing environment with far-reaching effects on our attitudes, values and personalities. The Internet is in fact changing the very structure of our thought-processes.
You come across all aspects of human experience and beha-viour in the digital realm – where they are channelled and reinforced, for better or for worse. It’s a well-known fact that the inhibition threshold is significantly reduced by anonymi-ty and physical absence.
But how do we intend to deal with this phenomenon in years to come? Our future cyber competence hinges on a balance between circumspection and enthusiasm, opportunity and risk. This book is designed to reinforce our capacity to weigh up the pros and cons of cyberspace, and hone our capacity for critical (cyber) reflection.
Cutting-edge research discoveries from a leading expert in the field of cyber-psychology.

Moral Tyranny
If you lie, cheat, defraud or generally step out of line, then trip up and get caught, you have to expect social disgrace to the point of ostracism – even if you happen to be part of the upper echelons. That wasn’t always the case; there’s a new breed of moral tyranny afoot.
Does this development indicate a rise of moral standards? Do we really set greater store by morals or are the scandals surrounding corruption, drugs and tax evasion provoked by social tension in a competitive society shot through with envy? Günter Ogger believes it’s a point well worth considering – because the fuss about the new power of morality is rapidly turning into a business in its own right.
A no-holds-barred, trenchant analysis.

Anselm Grün Die Kunst, das rechte Maß zu finden __
Anselm Grün read theology, philosophy and business studies. As bursar of the Benedictine abbey Münsterschwarzach he has been responsible for over 300 employees in the monastery’s various different holdings over a period of more than 35 years. One of the most successful spiritual authors of our day, his seminars and lectures are always highly frequented.
Pope Francis sets an example of moderation, but many find it a difficult concept to achieve and maintain. Exorbitant executive bonuses are just the tip of the iceberg: we all waste resources on a daily basis as we ransack nature, exploiting ourselves and each other. So how do we go about striking a proper balance? Such a central tenet revolves around sustainability and our consumer behaviour. Self-image and health, both physical and psychological, also play a vital role, as do avarice, greed and envy – and, on the other hand, mutual respect, empathy and mindfulness. Anselm Grün examines all these issues in depth; however his intention is not to put forth a moral suasion, but to show us a path towards a more contented and temperate life.
Anselm Grün’s books have been translated into 30 languages and achieved sales of over 14 million worldwide.

Philosophical Brain Games
P H i L o S o P H y
Thinking can be fun
God and man, nature, space and time, insight and self-know-ledge, society and the state, logic, ethics and morality –these are issues that have preoccupied people since time immemorial. Forays into philosophy can enhance our perspective on life’s pro-blems and hone our cognitive skills. Karl Popper once said that philosophy was just ‘enlightened common sense’. This book offers a playful and totally relaxed way of training that common sense with interesting quizzes and challenging brain-teasers.
Each chapter consists of several components: a compact introduc-tion to a central philosophical issue; an information section that provides historical material and explains the pertinent terminolo-gy; and finally a series of entertaining mental exercises.
• philosophers’ profiles (work out who was it) • philosophical brain-teasers (to heighten your philosophical
awareness) • think for yourself! (let yourself be challenged by thought
experiments) • a logic check (find the inherent logical flaw)• pros and cons (shape the best possible argument)

How to stop all your sentences ending in “but …”
We’ve no real reason to complain – but it doesn’t seem to stop us because there’s always that niggle of dissatisfaction. Why do we always feel there’s something amiss in areas where things ought to be running smoothly – in our partnerships, our relationships with friends, at work? If we’re honest, it’s high time to change things, but we keep putting it off. Why is that?
We are creatures of habit and it takes a lot to make us move beyond our comfort zone. Based on a wealth of examples from her coaching practice, Diana Dreeßen shows us how we can realise the full potential inherent in our lives by shaking off entrenched patterns of thought and behaviour. Let’s go! We can re-program our inner navigation system. The tiniest correction in our course will produce amazing results.

Emotional LeadingThe art of leading yourself and others
How to harness the power of inspirational leadership
Our actions are generally geared towards experiencing as many positive and as few negative emotions as possible. That goes for our work as well as our private lives. But what actually generates emotions? How do they come into being? in Emotional Leading Denis Mourlane explains how we can learn to develop greater awareness of our own emotions and those of others; how we can assess and ultimately influence them positively. The crucial factor is to take five fundamental psychological requirements into consideration. If these requirements are satisfied, the result will be an enhanced degree of motivation.
Denis Mourlane presents a sound model based on scientific fact that can be easily integrated into everyday life. He offers the reader effective tools to optimise their leadership skills.

»Die Vorstellung von der Dauerhaftigkeit unserer Staatenwelt ist absurd.«
180 pages
The world is completely out of joint and most of us haven’t even noticed. However there are some people who are only too well aware of this predicament: terrorists and heads of state. They are taking advantage of the cracks in failing states for their own gain – and the number of failed and failing states is constantly on the rise. Each new crisis triggers hectic responses in the form of peace policy tourism at the highest level. But it never seems to offer a solution. Why is that so?
Political reasoning is based on international law, which in turn is based on the concept of the nation state. But what’s omitted from the equation is the fact that many state borders are entirely arbitrary, drawn up in the wake of post-colonialism or as a result of political and economic interests disregarding the needs of the local populace.
An appeal for rethinking peace policies. Wolffsohn goes against the grain of established political theory.

Islamic State: End of the Line?

The Arab world is undergoing the most severe crisis since the thirteenth century Mongol invasion. Many Arab countries have failed at even the most basic functions of state and seem unable to protect their citizens. In turn, the people are fed up with their rulers. The only remaining common bond is Islamic faith – so every conflict is bound to turn into a religious battleground. We may well be facing the beginning of a new Thirty Years War, a war that will have a profound knock-on effect on Europe bringing more fundamental changes than any other event since the Second World War.
A perceptive historico-political analysis and a comprehensive inventory of modern Islam by an acknowledged expert on Arab affairs. Rainer Hermann’s account goes way beyond mere reportage, venturing a well-founded prognosis.

Hasnain Kazim moves to Islamabad as a correspondent for Der Spiegel and discovers a land rife with contradictions. What makes Pakistan – a nuclear power full of religious extremists – tick? What holds together a country where the elite stages glitzy thousand-dollar bashes while working class families live in shameful conditions of near-slavery?
Kazim explores Pakistan’s extremes; he speaks to clergymen, politicians, arms dealers and even the hangman of Lahore. The country is beset by major problems; more and more people are living in abject poverty, the unemployment rate is simply staggering, and soon the population will top the two hundred million mark – the majority under thirty, with no foreseeable prospects.
A fascinating report on a society that doesn't seem to know where it’s heading.
Pakistan offers a vital key to understanding the problems within the Islamic world and the trouble spots in other parts of it.
Stories that leave us unsettled, bemused yet entertained, contributing to a deeper understanding of Pakistan.
Much ado on the Eastern front
“Do you feel German, Ukrainian, Russian or Jewish? Or maybe a bit of each?” Filipp Piatov is, as it were, a merge of all these cultures. His Russian father and Ukrainian mother left the Soviet Union as it fell apart around them and Piatov grew up in a small town in Germany. From early on, he pondered the nature of his identity – which country could he truly call home?In this book, he sets out to explore his family’s homeland; travelling by rail and thumb all the way into the depths of Siberia, he investigates the apparently banal as well as the seemingly grandiose as he goes.
Is it true you get free food on the Trans-Siberian Railway? Will home-distilled vodka really make you go blind? Why had he never asked his grandparents how they managed to survive famine and war? Or how the Jews of Russia mana-ged to cling to their faith by their fingernails in a regime that strictly banned religion?
Intimate, intelligent and leavened with youthful high spirits, Filipp Piatov gives us the lowdown on his road trip into the depths of the Russian soul.
