Demand continues to be brisk for Jap-
anese companies to hire foreign stu-
dents in Japan as they eye training the
future leaders of their foreign subsidiar-
ies.
The trend is likely to continue as Jap-
anese companies currently have many
high-quality foreign students to choose
from. As the government aims to in-
crease the number of foreign students,
Japanese universities race to establish
programs friendly to them.
“We are getting an increasing number
of inquiries from companies and foreign
students,” said Tomoharu Hori of the In-
ternational Foreign Students Associa-
tion.
The number of foreign students
granted working visas has risen for sev-
en years in a row to 22,419 in 2017, up 15
percent from 19,435 in 2016. The figure
was 15,657 in 2015 and 12,958 in 2014.
The peak before the global recession in
2008 was 11,040.
However, Hori cautioned that not all
foreign students have equal chance to
land jobs they want. Companies have
always wanted those with strong Japa-
nese language skills, a good under-
standing of Japanese business etiquette
and engineering degrees.
“If you major in information technol-
ogy, artificial intelligence and things of
those nature, you will have no problem
landing a job. Companies tend to seek
future leaders for their overseas subsid-
iaries and future managers for their for-
eign trainees in Japan,” Hori said.

companies that want to hire foreign stu-
dents who will work in back offices and
building design, Hori added.
Regarding Japanese language skills,
acquiring N1 of the Japanese Language
Proficiency Test is not a must. Rather,
Japanese companies look for the ability
to actually communicate in Japanese.
The test, JLPT, is ranked from N5 to N1,
with N1 being the highest level.
Doing part-time jobs is also recom-
mended because it helps foreign stu-
dents to learn how to communicate in
Japanese in a business environment, as
well as business etiquette. Convenience
stores and restaurants are typical op-
tions for part-time jobs that offer oppor-
tunities to obtain such skills.
Japan is one of a few countries allow-
ing foreigners with student visas to
work. Foreign students in Japan are al-
lowed to work 28 hours a week and lon-
ger during summer and winter vaca-
tions.

Japan’s unemployment rate has been
hovering near record low, marking 2.4
percent in May 2019. Japan is fully em-
ployed, but due to the shortage of
younger workers, companies are strug-
gling to renew their staff. This lack of
young people is not limited to the work-
force, as Japanese universities also
have difficulties filling classes. For these
reasons, Japan is a land of unique op-
portunities for people who want to study
or start an international career. That be-
ing said, to work or study in Japan or
simply live daily life, you need a certain
level of Japanese. The best way to
achieve that is by attending a language
immersion program. In Japanese lan-
guage schools, depending on their ser-
vices you may also receive support for
university entrance preparation too.
Schools provide guidance and counsel-
ing to help you find universities, offer
EJU preparation classes, and even write
recommendation letters for student ap-
plications. For those wishing to work,
some schools offer employment sup-
port with resume checks, job interview
training, and recruitment sessions
where you can talk directly with com-
pany representatives. If you want to take
advantage of the ripe economic climate,
coming to Japan through a language
school program will give you the oppor-
tunities you are looking for.
Japan, a land of opportunities!
Ryan Ortiz-Williams, from New Jer-
sey, is studying at the Japanese Lan-
guage and Culture Program Preparatory
Course (Bekka) at Kansai University.
Q: Please tell us why you came to study
in Japan.
I want to work in foreign language
education in Japan. By studying at a
Japanese university, I can experience
Japanese methods of education first-
hand and gain the skills I need to be a
good teacher in Japan while improving
my language skills at the same time.
Q: What was your impression of Japan
when you came to study here?
When I came to Japan I was inspired
by how hardworking everyone is. See-
ing everyone around me dedicating
themselves to their goals made me
want to always try my best as well.
Q: How will you make use of your expe-
rience of studying in Japan in the future?
I hope that after I finish my studies in
Japan I can become a licensed teacher
in Japan. I hope that when I teach my
classes I can take the best parts of my
American education and my Japanese
education to make a good school expe-
rience for my students.
Q: Do you have any advice for people
who want to study in Japan?
Even if your major is Japanese, do
not treat the Japanese language like an
academic subject. If you truly want to
improve your Japanese, don’t just
study all day. Make Japanese friends,
watch Japanese television, read enjoy-
able books in Japanese. By using Jap-
anese in your daily life, you will con-
tinue to improve.

Q: Please tell us why you came to
study in Japan.
Through anime, I started to become
fascinated by Japanese culture, and
wanted to experience that culture per-
sonally. Therefore, I started to study Japa-
nese, then fell in love more with the idea
of studying in Japan. Japanese language,
in my opinion, is more interesting than
any of the other languages I have studied.
I want to be able to fully utilize my knowl-
edge and skills in Japanese, and I knew in
order to do that I had to study in Japan.
Q: What was your impression of Japan ?
When I first came to Japan, I was still
unsure about the idea of living alone, far
from home, even though I was deter-
mined during my first year here. I am
proud to say that I have made the right
decision by studying here. People here
are kind and polite, as depicted in anime.
Q: How will you make use of your expe-
rience of studying in Japan in the future?
After graduating from university, I
want to work here in Japan. Since I have
studied both business and Japanese
language, I may consider being a trans-
lator or a businessman here in Japan.
Q: Do you have any advice for people
who want to study in Japan?
During your first year here, try to mas-
ter Japanese at your own pace and do
not rush things. You will get used to life
here after about six months. Also, do
not be afraid of trying new things. We all
learn from our mistakes.

Indonesia’s Cah Jani is studying at
Tokai University’s School of Science.
Q: Can you please tell us why you came
to study in Japan?
My uncle is conducting chemical re-
search and I had opportunities to learn about substances used in cakes and
bread. That’s how I became interested in
chemical research. Also, I became inter-
ested in Japan as I had been watching
Japanese anime. I decided to come
study at Tokai University where I can
conduct advanced chemistry research.
Q: What was your impression of Japan
when you came to study here?
As I had imagined, Japan has beauti-
ful nature and nobody litters. I was im-
pressed with the view of a street. Also, I
was happy some Japanese I don’t know
were nice to me when I was in trouble in
an environment unfamiliar to me.
Q: How will you make use of your experi-
ence of studying in Japan in the future?
I want to go to graduate school, so I
want to obtain basic knowledge, and
then knowledge about a specific field.
After graduation, I want to work for a
major Japanese confectionery maker
using the knowledge and experience I
acquire in university to develop tasty,
high-quality confectioneries.
Q: Do you have any advice for people
who want to study in Japan?
Living in Japan becomes easy more
quickly if you study the language, as
well as culture and customs. Don’t leave
what you don’t know unknown. Keep
asking questions until you fully under-
stand. Know your purpose to study in
Japan and make your dream come true.

There are many paths open to those
considering higher education in Japan,
with options ranging from technical as-
sociate’s degrees to Ph.Ds.
While requirements vary by program
and university, applicants must gener-
ally be 18 or older and have completed
12 years of education (or certification
equal to that).
Additionally, institutions where all or
the majority of courses are taught in
Japanese may require applicants to take
the Japan Student Services Organiza-
tion’s Examination for Japanese Univer-
sity Admission Requirements rather
than the more popular Japanese-Lan-
guage Proficiency Test (JLPT).
Applicants should also be mindful of
what financial aid and scholarships can
be obtained prior to their move.
However, for those undecided on
whether or not to take the plunge into
academia abroad, one common option
is to first apply for a student visa through
a Japanese school and focus on accli-
mating to the culture and daily life
through intensive language study.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Study
in Japan website offers a comprehen-
sive starting point with information on
these and other options, as well as vi-
sual breakdowns of application process-
es and which country they must be com-
pleted in.

Foreign students in Japan are eli-
gible for many different scholar-
ships sponsored by the central and
local governments, as well as the
private sector.
Because there are so many, the
best way to find out how to acquire
scholarships is to contact each
scholarship sponsor or the schools
being applied to directly.
The central government offers
seven types of scholarships for for-
eign students, ranging from ¥117,000
to ¥242,000 a month, according to
the Ministry of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology
(MEXT). The scholarships vary in du-
ration from one to five years. All
seven also offer tuition and entrance
fee exemptions.
Students can apply for the schol-
arships via Japanese embassies or
universities.
For application through embas-
sies, applicants should check with
embassies as recruiting targets dif-
fer by country and region.
For application through Japanese
universities, there are different
ways to apply, both before and af-
ter arriving in Japan. Some univer-
sities require scholarship candi-
dates to take qualifying exams.
Also, there are dozens of scholar-
ship sponsors in local governments
and organizations promoting inter-
national exchanges, as well as
more than 100 scholarship spon-
sors in the private sector. It is im-
portant to note that some scholar-
ships must be applied for before
coming to Japan.

Roundtable留学生による座談会
Owing to the efforts of the govern-
ment and various universities, the
number of foreign students in Japan
has been markedly increasing in re-
cent years. As of May 1, 2018, there
were 298,980 foreign students study-
ing in Japan. This represented a 12
percent rise, or a 31,980 person in-
crease, over the previous year, which
was equivalent to a staggering 185
percent increase over the 2012 fig-
ures that stood at 161,848 people. An-
other significant recent trend is the
sharp increase of students from
Asian countries. This was especially
true for students from China that
reached a total of 114,950 in 2018 (up
7,690 over the previous year), 72,354
from Vietnam (up 10,683 over the
previous year) and 24,331 from Nepal
(up 2,831 over the previous year), ac-
cording to the Ministry of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technol-
ogy (MEXT).
The Japan Times recently had an op-
portunity to speak to five foreign stu-
dents who chose to study in Japan and
hear their impressions of campus life,
as well as their future perspective about
studying or working in Japan.
The participants of this roundtable
were Wu Hung-Hsin from Taiwan, a se-
nior in the Faculty of Liberal Arts at So-
phia University; Le Ngoc Huyen from
Vietnam, a senior in the Faculty of Busi-
ness Administration, Department of
Hospitality Management at Asia Uni-
versity; Alyssa Tan Siau Ning from Ma-
laysia, a junior in the College of Intercul-
tural Communication at Rikkyo
University; Forgo Teodora Maria from

Michiru Mekata, a writer for The Ja-

moderator. Excerpts of the discussion
are as follows:
Moderator: First, tell us why you decid-
ed to study in Japan.
Wu: A major factor was that I learned
that I could study in Japan even if I
couldn’t speak Japanese, which I
couldn’t until coming over. Another at-
tractive point of studying in Japan was
that I had traveled many times to Japan
since childhood, and I didn’t find much
cultural difference from Taiwan.
Teodora: Though I was interested in
Asian countries since I was a child, I de-
cided Japan as my specific destination
after seeing an old film featuring Beat
Takeshi.
Huyen: I became interested in study-
ing in Japan after seeing the news
on the 2011 Great East Japan Earth-
quake. I was deeply touched by the
Japanese people who abided by the
rules, thought about the feelings of
others, and tried not to be a nui-
sance despite suffering such a cata-

Roundtable留学生による座談会
strophic disaster.
Alyssa: Originally, Japan wasn’t my first
choice and I was thinking of going to the
U.K. to study. But the U.K. is very far and
the cost was so high that I had second
thoughts. At the time, an acquaintance
who had studied in Japan told me how
safe Japan was and how well its schol-
arship system is consolidated, so I de-
cided to come.
Nina: I’m interested in many things and
always trying to reach new goals. Upon
learning Japanese at a language school
and thinking of my next step, I thought
it may be a good idea to go to Japan to
continue my research.
Moderator: Why did you choose the
university you are currently studying
at?
Nina: The Department of Advanced Sci-
ence at Tokyo Denki University was an
ideal environment for acquiring my
doctorate on brain image and mega file
studies.
Alyssa: Malaysia is a multilingual coun-
try where various ethnicities live to-
gether. To enhance understanding and
respond to such environmental, cultural
and language differences, I felt it would
be useful to study intercultural commu-
nication at Rikkyo University.
Teodora: There is an authority on Ger-
man literature and comparative cul-
tural theory at Meiji University, and it
made sense for me to study under this
professor as I am researching interna-
tional, German and Hungarian litera-
ture.
Huyen: The Department of Hospitality
Management of Asia University was
just the right choice for me to learn
about the Japanese spirit of omote-
nashi (hospitality).
Wu: I chose Sophia because the school
promotes the G30 program (a MEXT
program to globalize universities
through networking) and is prestigious
for starting the first English program in
Japan.
Moderator: How is your campus life?
Alyssa: It’s challenging because I am al-
ways busy with lectures and tests. I
wish I had more time for interacting
with people.
Huyen: It’s fun and I am really glad that I
came to Japan. There is active interna-
tional exchange at Asia University since
there are many foreign students from
various countries. We sometimes get
together to cook and eat different foods
from other countries.
Wu: School is enjoyable and anime-like.
Though there are many clubs at Sophia,
and the U.N. program that I participated
during my sophomore spring vacation
was a great experience. I never thought
I would have the chance of working at
the U.N. while I was a college student.
Nina: Life as a researcher may be diffi-
cult at times, but I am grateful that the
school is so supportive. For example,
they even offer short trips to Kamakura
to promote exchange among Japanese
and foreign students.
Teodora: What surprised me most when
coming to Japan was that unlike Hun-
gary, the school buildings were grand
with many facilities and an excellent
lineup of famous professors. However,
the Japanese students were mostly shy,
and I had a hard time making friends for
the first few months until I took the first
step to approach them.
Moderator: What are your plans after
graduation?
Huyen: I will start working for a Japa-
nese travel agency after graduation.
Since I had the chance of coming over
to study in Japan, I hope to propagate
the good points of both Vietnam and Ja-
pan when I start working.
Wu: I have been accepted by a Japa-
nese wholesale company to start work

Roundtable留学生による座談会
from next spring. Apparently, this com-
pany still has only a handful of foreign
employees and is planning to become
global in the future. Knowing this situa-
tion, I hope to use my language skills to
bridge Japan and Vietnam, as well as
other countries.
Nina: I’m still in the first year of my doc-
torate course and have two more to go
until graduation, so I haven’t really de-
cided. But I am currently happy as a
part-timer at a small AI-related startup
company that is open, quick in decision-
making and has more than 50 percent
foreign employees. It may be a good
idea to stay in Japan if I could find a
company like the place I am working
now that welcomes women and is sup-
portive in allowing everybody to work
together.
Teodora: I hope to stay in Japan and get
a job in translation or interpreting that
promotes cultural exchange and share
the good points of Japan that are still
unknown to foreigners, while helping
foreigners live more comfortably in Ja-
pan.
Alyssa: I haven’t decided yet, but I
would like to use my ability to speak
four languages to do something that
helps other people, like translation and
interpreting.
Moderator: Is there any advice for those
thinking of coming to Japan to study?
Wu: Don’t expect too much, but at the
same time be curious and make good
use of your student years to experience
Japanese culture as much as possible. I
have been to soba (buckwheat) noodle
and Japanese papermaking workshops,
which have taught me how profound
Japanese culture is. And if you are go-
ing to study in Japan, you must learn
Japanese. This is especially so about
keigo (formal Japanese). You have to be
in Japan to learn its proper use.
Teodora: I think you must be prepared
in many ways. You may become disap-
pointed and give up studying abroad, if
you are thinking lightly about it and not
studying closely about your destination
beforehand. That being said, you still
may encounter difficulties upon coming
like myself: I was shocked that the Japa-
nese I had studied for six years was use-
less at the city office in the beginning.
Huyen: I’m happy that the number of
Vietnamese people studying in Japan is
increasing recently. However, it is disap-
pointing to find many of them worried
about their part-time jobs instead of
studying. They should acknowledge the
fact that they are here to study and learn
the Japanese language. I studied Japa-
nese very intently for two years, but I
still am checked or corrected by local
people when I make a mistake. You also
learn a lot from such experiences, too.
Alyssa: You have to be open-minded
and be aware that this is not your coun-
try where your common sense is always
applicable. I also agree that you really
need Japanese for your daily life; I stud-
ied the language seriously for a year.
Nina: Unlike travel, studying abroad
means to spend your daily life in anoth-
er environment. Japan is not for every-
body and some people may not get ac-
customed to life here. I therefore think it
might be a good idea to have a trial pe-
riod of three to six months of living and
studying in Japan.
Afterthoughts
The most recent discussion among the
five overseas students seemed to clearly
reveal the thoughts of those living and
studying outside their home countries.
The students were not only bright and
hardworking, but also had clear thoughts
about their future. Another notable point
was that all the students looked forward
to finding a job and staying in Japan after
graduation. With the government and
universities becoming more intent on
globalizing the country and the academic
arena, the Foreign Student Times looks
forward to an increasing number of
bright students enjoying the experience
of studying, working and living in Japan,
while participating in Japanese society.
