HOW are Ductless Evidence Drying Cabinets and Forensic Workstations important to my department?They are important for two reasons: evidence integrity and safety. A ductless drying cabinet will protect the evidence from cross-contamination and the operator from possible airborne pathogen contamination.Putrid odors caused by decomposition as well as harmful viruses and bacteria are trapped by the filtration system which allows for a cleaner, safer work environment.

NOTICE: Proper ventilation in a forensic work area or laboratory is a major concern for both safety and comfort. The kinds and types of hazardous materials to be utilized and the designated work area should be reviewed with professional safety experts to determine and design an adequate ventilation system.

Workstation and/or laboratory hoods are safety devices made especially to prevent toxic, flammable or noxious materials from entering the work atmosphere. A schedule of evaluation and maintenance is essential to their effective use. A fume hood can never substitute for safe working practices or proper hazardous material handling or disposal.

Protect yourself and your evidence from infectious pathogens and noxious odors while reducing possible cross-contamination of evidence

Dry and store critical evidence with SIRCHIE’s DrySafe™ Forensic Evidence Drying Cabinet. The DrySafe™ Evidence Drying Cabinet is designed to protect the operator and the environment from harmful bacteria, viruses and putrid odors associated with the drying of evidence, while ensuring the integrity of your evidence by protecting against cross-contamination. DrySafe™ is configured to clean the incoming “drying” air through pre-filtration or HEPA filtration, while the cabinet exhaust air is cleaned by a combination of bonded carbon and HEPA filtration.

Decontamination of the DrySafe™ Evidence Drying Cabinet between cases eliminates residual DNA that may compromise evidence and affect subsequent serology. SIRCHIE offers a highly effective decontamination spray that will provide high-level disinfection of the cabinet. When used to manufacturer’s specification, the decontamination spray will also disinfect prefilters and HEPA filters, removing any harmful pathogens that are present. A special chemisorptive bonded carbon filter is designed to remove the active (noncarcinogenic) ingredients in SIRCHIE’s spray-down solution.

Prior to decontamination, the spray-down nozzle may be used to remove gross matter. Rinsing of DrySafe™ is easily accomplished with cold tap water.

Collapsible shelves may also be removed for either high temperature sterilization or low-temperature, high-level disinfection. The automatic pump allows for easy disposal of waste water into a catch tank or nearby drain. The automatic waste pump is controlled by the AirSafe™ automatic safety controller with a built-in operational timer.

Filters are included with all DrySafe™ evidence drying cabinets.

rEPlACEmEnT filTErSCarbon Filter (ACF300) bonded carbon filter is used in the evidence drying cabinets to absorb the fumes and odors associated with the drying and decaying of bloody articles.

HEPA Filter (ACFHEPA) high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters with a 99.997% efficiency rating for collection at 0.3 microns. Used for containment of particles—toxic powders, asbestos, lead, fingerprinting powders, etc.

Particulate Pre-Filter (ACFPRE) is an electrostatically charged fiber filter that removes sub-micron particulates. This filter has an efficiency rating of 99.997% @ 0.3 microns. Used to protect the absorption filters from contamination. Each absorption filter is fitted with a pre-filter at time of purchase. Sold in packs of 12.

CYAnOSAfE™ fUming CHAmbErThe CyanoSafe™ Filtered Cyanoacrylate Fuming Chamber is designed to safely and effectively process evidentiary items using the cyanoacrylate fuming method. It provides a controlled environment for the processing of latent fingerprints on most nonporous surfaces while eliminating personnel exposure to hazardous cyanoacrylate fumes. The CyanoSafe™ utilizes solid-state heating elements that accelerate cyanoacrylate polymerization while providing proper humidity levels inside the chamber.

The CyanoSafe™ is equipped with the AirSafe™ automatic safety controller which monitors filter conditions and allows for the automatic processing of latent evidence.

Once the cyanoacrylate has been placed into the heating tray, simply press the button labeled “PROCESS” on the automatic safety controller. The chamber locks down and a humidity sensor is activated as the fuming process begins. Once the desired results are achieved the operator simply presses “PURGE” which automatically removes all harmful cyanoacrylate fumes from the chamber.

AC6200A & AC6400A ADvAnCED fOrEnSiC WOrKSTATiOnS The AC600 Series Advanced Forensic Workstation is designed for those laboratories that don’t want to change the filters between applications. With a dual filter bed, the AC6200A and AC6400A are ideal for departments that process a large volume of evidence with powder and chemicals. Simply stack a HEPA filter with an electrostatically charged pre-filter attached in the bottom of the unit and place a bonded chemically absorbent Carbon Filter on top to complete the basic forensic application configuration.

The AC6200A and AC6400A both have a large vertical workspace which can accommodate a microscope or a fuming stand.

DUCTlESS iDEnTifiCATiOn WOrKSTATiOnSIRCHIE’s ductless fume hoods are ideal for protecting the operator from toxic gases and particulates used in routine analysis. The hoods are designed to protect the operator from residual cyanoacrylate and carbon-based powders used in forensic analysis. Other commonly used chemicals, such as methanol, xylene and acetone, are also contained. The AirSafe™ Controller automatically monitors filter life and airflow conditions. The AirSafe™ Controller, not your nose, detects when to change the filters. The lower sash is outfitted with an electromagnetic controller that senses when the sash is lifted. When the sash is raised, the blower increases velocity to compensate for the additional opening.

1. Room air flowing away from the operator enters the enclosure in a horizontal pattern at “A”.

2. Contaminated air “B” and “C” is drawn behind the baffle via a low pressure area established at the base of the baffle and behind the horizontal baffle exhaust slots.

3. Contaminated air “B” consists of heavier elements, while lighter gases and particles are captured at “C”.

4. Combined contaminated air consisting of “B” and “C” is directed through the filter to “D”.

5. Clean air “E” is either recirculated back into the room or vented via ducting.

The workstation has an ultraviolet light to irradiate tubes, flasks and pipettes between amplifications. This UV light sterilization effectively destroys potentially contaminating DNA and RNA in minutes. The low profile design will fit in your current work area. lATEnT PrinT DUSTing STATiOnSIRCHIE Finger Print Laboratories introduces the latest forensic containment solution to protect the officer during latent print processing using latent fingerprint powders. The DS100 and DS200 provide superior protection while dusting items of evidence with a variety of latent print powders. Even laminar flow air pulls potential toxic particulate away from the officer’s breathing zone and into a multi-level filtration zone. The DS100 and DS200 are constructed from clear polycarbonate to allow excellent lighting conditions for observation by officers. Access into the latent print dusting station is easily obtained using the multiple folding sash doors. The sash doors provide a barrier between the process and the operator for added protection from smaller and lighter particulate.

Due to a variance in particle size in all latent finger print powders, the only effective way to capture the smallest to the largest particles is by pulling them away from the operator’s breathing zone. Lighter and smaller particulate have a natural tendency to rise, while heavier particulate will fall on the base of the dusting station and can simply be cleaned. The most effective way to provide personal protection from latent finger print powder dust is to use an upward flowing laminar flow workstation. Sirchie’s latent print dusting stations have been independently tested for powder containment.

bOnDED CArbOn filTEr—nO DUST!SIRCHIE Finger Print Laboratories’ revolutionary bonded carbon filters represent a significant breakthrough in ductless fume hood technology. Traditionally, granulated loose carbon filters, used in other ductless fume hoods, are not only dirty but can actually be more hazardous than the chemical being contained. Recognizing a major flaw in ductless fume hood filter design, a proprietary process was developed to hold carbon in a solid matrix, alleviating the threat of toxic carbon dust being released into the laboratory. Certain chemicals require an impregnate to be added to the activated carbon for neutralization of the target chemical. These impregnates, while held in a safe solid matrix, prevent potentially dangerous exposure to highly toxic chemicals associated with evidence processing. Capacity is maximized— the bonded process eliminates “dead zones” in the filter by evenly distributing carbon.

HEPA filTErHEPA filters are designed to trap toxic powders and fiber particulate. A HEPA filter is an effective way to trap finger print powder while processing evidence for latent prints, as in our Identification and Basic Workstation. HEPA filters are also used in the DrySafe™ evidence drying cabinet to trap blood borne pathogens.

AirSAfE™ AUTOmATiC SAfETY COnTrOllErThe AirSafe™ automatic safety controller ensures your protection 24 hours a day, by incorporating a combination of airflow monitoring, filter monitoring, and gas detection far superior to anything available today. Constant monitoring and adjustment of fume hood face velocity ensures a high level of operator protection. Vividly marked function keys make operation of the workstation as simple as a touch of the button.

AirSafe™ constantly monitors the face velocity and displays the actual airflow on an alphanumeric display. AirSafe™ has built-in low airflow alarms that can be set and displayed on the liquid crystal display. Audible and visual alarms alert the user to insufficient airflow.

AirSafe™ also displays the current filter conditions and alerts the operator if filter saturation occurs. A state-of-the-art gas detector constantly samples the exhaust air and displays the results on the liquid crystal display.
