There are two different types of forest fires, but both types of fires aren’t as bad as you think they may be. One fire can be really good for a forest. While the other can be really bad for one. It just depends on what kind of fire it is and how controlled it is.

Surface Fires, are fires that only burn the leaves and sticks on the forest floors. This type of forest fire usually doesn’t burn hot enough to damage the roots of plants or bigger trees.

Surface fires can sometimes be started by lightning strikes. However many surface fires can be started by people who are careless with their fires.

Surface fires lower the

amount of things to burn on the forest floor, meaning that the fires are not as strong if they happen a lot. If a fire goes through an area, it burns the bigger plants, making more space for grasses, herbs, and shrubs to grow which can provide food and shelter for many different species. Fire protects forests against nasty bugs and diseases that can cause the trees to become weak and die. Diseases and insects kill more trees per year than fire does. Some trees have bark or cones that require heat in order to produce seeds. Some of these trees even encourage fires by having leaves designed to help create fire.

Crown fires are fires

that spread from treetop treetop. A good way to remember crown fires, is that a crown goes on your head and a crown fire burns on the treetops (head). These types of fires can usually burn down a giant part of the forest. They can also destroy the habitat for all of the animals that live in that area.

Crown fires usually start as surface fires. They become crown fires because people kept putting out the surface fires. Without surface fires there are extra plants or trees that grow and these are what fuel the fire to help it become hotter and higher.
