shared with us how to become
a HLTA. The HLTA
qualification provides
recognition of the skills and
knowledge TAs already bring
to the role. He reminded us
that we mend bruised knees

What’s On for
Spring 6-8
We started 2020 with a fabulous Teaching Assistant Conference where we
welcomed over 60 TAs and reminded them just how important they are to us in
the classroom.

The day started with SEND updates from Lorraine Petersen OBE. She reminded us how SEND has
changed over the years and the challenges faced by 21st Century children.
Did you know: 1 in 100 babies are born with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
4 babies per day are born addicted to drugs
10% of children and young people have a mental health need at any one time.
Alison Wollerson, deputy head at Houghton on the Hill, shared the
recent KIRA research on the impact of TAs. She shared strategies
which have a positive academic impact on children, such as
metacognition, feedback and working as a team with your teacher
making sure TAs are used effectively. She recommended a book to read
“Teaching Assistants Guide to Effective Interaction” by P. Bosanquet,
Julie Radford & Rob Webster.
Valerie Hall, Primary School Social emotional and Mental Health Team,
finished our day with an emotional presentation reminding us to be a
champion for our children and be “the one still point in a child’s
storm”.
We would like to thank all the speakers for making the day informative,
inspirational and for making our Teaching Assistants feel valued.

Primary & Special
Heidi Malliff resigned from her
role as Primary Programme
Manager to embark on other
exciting opportunities in the
city and the county. We
would like to take this
opportunity to thank her for
her continued hard work and
dedication in supporting many
of our trainee teachers over
the past 3 years, we wish her
well.
Andrea Brown, Lead
Practitioner at FWTSA, will
take on the role with
immediate effect.
Thanks to the hand work of
our mentors who share their
expertise and give up their
time to support our trainees
and to our Link tutors who
ensure our Trainees are
receiving quality training within
the Alliance.
Secondary We are thrilled to let you know that all of our 11 secondary trainee teachers from last year's cohort secured posts at the end of the course, with 6 trainees accepting posts within our alliance schools. Our employment data shows that our rationale, as an alliance of schools, to grow our own talent and produce high

quality NQTs for our schools is very successful, which is very pleasing. All alliance schools have employed NQTs from our home grown School Direct programme. This year's trainees, all 15 of them, are making progress, thanks to the support of the colleagues working with them and constantly challenging them to ensure that they are continuing to improve their performance. Thank you. Feedback from trainees tells us that professional discussions with mentors is always accompanied by suggestions about how to improve their performance. Mentors give feedback frequently and “opportunistically” to enhance learning and trainees really value this high quality, personalised feedback; they find it extremely supportive in helping them to meet the teacher standards. Our recruitment for 20/21 is very strong, we have
had 7 offers accepted and are interviewing another 2 candidates next week, with applications still coming in. We are thrilled to announce that we have secured an offer for a place on our newly designed SEND PE course too. Given the present climate, we are in a very strong position. It is pleasing to note that applicants often cite, when researching for a teacher training provider, that our course was recommended to them. We are clearly doing a grand job so thank you to all of the teacher trainers/ mentors who contribute to our programme!

CPD
The Autumn Term brought us
a variety of CPD, including
ELSA Training, Makaton,
Leading a Mentally Healthy
School, Maths Subject
Leadership and Diving Deeper
as well as a number of subject
network meetings. Feedback
has been very positive.
If you identify a training need in
your school please let us know
and we will do our best to
provide you with CPD to suite
the needs of the school.
Network Meetings
Subject network meetings are
free to member schools and
these give staff valuable
opportunities to share best
practice. We are also using
these networks to help prepare
subject leaders for future
potential Ofsted deep dives.
However, more recently
facilitators are putting a great
deal of time and effort into
planning and preparing for
these meetings to find they
have been poorly attended.
CPD and Network Meetings
For this reason we will start a
“Book Now” system. This
will give us the opportunity to
manage bookings and cancel if
needed.
Meeting agendas/discussion
topics will be emailed out to
heads approximately two
weeks before the meeting and
schools will be requested to
book a representative on to
the event via the on-line
system. Dates and venues of all the
network meetings are on our
website.

Sport England
We were lucky enough to be
awarded funding to work
with a number of our
secondary schools to
increase the number of
young people who have a
positive attitude towards
sport and physical
activity. The funding is being
used to help build the
confidence of our young
people to take part in physical
activity irrespective of ability
and to increase young people’s
enjoyment of taking part in
physical activity. PE leads have met during the
autumn term and are focussing
on providing an inclusive,
engaging PE curriculum, to
increase the activity levels of
our least active pupils and
to improve the status and
profile of physical activities,
sports and PE to improve
whole school outcomes.
SEND Reviews are available to our member schools. Please contact Andrea Brown at FWTSA
for further details.
