FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1) Flora and Fauna – The Flagship Species Fund Small Grants Programme

The Flagship Species Fund aims to provide practical support to the conservation of endangered species and their associated ecosystems in developing countries. Projects must focus on threatened species of animals and plants. Main restrictions are that the Programme will not support work that is part of an academic qualification. The Flagship Species Fund Small Grants Programme provides urgently needed support to small scale and pilot conservation projects around the world that are concerned directly with the protection of endangered flagship species. The Programme currently disperses grants once a year. In 2007, grants will be awarded in May. The deadline for applications is 16th February 2007. Only proposals submitted using the application form and sent to the Flagship Species Fund coordinator by the set deadline will be considered for funding.

2) Belgian Focal Point to the GTI launches new call for capacity building projects

The Belgian Focal Point to the Global Taxonomy Initiative housed at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels officially launched in 15 December 2006 a new call for proposals in regard to individual and institutional capacity building in taxonomy and collection management.

The application form can be downloaded as a Word or PDF file from their website or can be provided by email to interested parties. If electronic submission should be impossible, paper copies can also be sent by ordinary mail to the address mentioned below. The application form must at all times be complemented with recent curriculum vitae. Applications can be submitted until February 28, 2007.

3) Cleveland Zoological Society Small grants

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is accepting pre-proposals for review in the Africa Seed Grants Program of the Cleveland Zoological Society. Awards ranging from $1000 - $3000 will be made to conservation and research initiatives involving animals and their habitat, and educational or cultural activities that involve or impact animals and their habitat. Ideal projects will have clear, long term conservation

implications, positively impact local people and create opportunities for capacity building in country. Projects focusing on bush meat, mitigating human-wildlife conflict, and investigating human-wildlife disease issues are of special interest to the Zoo, and projects specifically dealing with these issues are strongly encouraged to apply. The pre-proposal application deadline is March 2, 2007. Grant recipients will be notified by May 18, 2007.

4) African Forest Research Network – Grants for Junior and Senior Scientists

The Junior and Senior Scientists Fellowship Programs (JSF program) of African Forest Research Network (AFORNET) supports research in forest science and related areas. The grants are open to promising African scientists affiliated to training and research institutions in Africa who have shown the potential to undertake creative and innovative research in forestry in Africa, whether individually or as a team. Potential applicants include: Active researchers in forestry science and related areas; Post-doctoral or graduate researchers, including post graduate students registered abroad, but intending to undertake field research in Africa; and Graduates intending to undertake research for a higher professional qualification.

Applicants to the Junior Scientists’ Fellowship Program should not be over 40 years at the time of application. AFORNET is also inviting African tree and forest scientists to submit multi-disciplinary and trans-national research proposals that fall under one of the following thematic areas: Woodland, natural forests and biodiversity conservation; Community-based forestry; Reforestation and rehabilitation of degraded and arid lands; Socio-economics and policy issues; and Non-Timber Forest Products and Lesser known timber. Application Deadline: March 31 and September 30 yearly.

Grants are open to teams of senior scientists who are willing to undertake collaborative and trans­national research in Africa. There is no age limit for the applicants to the Senior Scientists’ Fellowship Program.

5) The Regional Environmental Centre

The Regional Environmental Centre (REC), with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), proposals to support Environmental Civil Society Organisation (CSO) projects related to urban environment and sustainability in the Western Balkan region.

The programme foresees two granting schemes at the national and regional level. The total amount available for Regional Grants is 200,000 EURO. Regional grants are up to EURO 35,000 each. In exceptional cases grants can reach up to EURO 50,000.

REC is currently launching, the first round of national grants for CSOs. More information on these national grants can be found with each of the respective REC country offices as well as under the project website at http://www.rec.org/sector/support/national-grants.html

Aarhus Pilot Project The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe is calling for national pilot project applications as part of the regional project “Improving the Practices of Public

6) African Women's Development Fund

The African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) funds local, national, sub-regional and regional organisations in Africa working towards women's empowerment. The AWDF is an institutional capacity-building and programme development fund, which aims to help build a culture of learning and partnerships within the African women's movement. In addition to awarding grants, the AWDF attempts to strengthen the organisational capacities of its grantees. The AWDF funds work in five thematic areas: Women's Human Rights, Political Participation, Peace Building, Health, Reproductive Rights and HIV/AIDS, Economic Empowerment. The AWDF makes grants in three cycles each year. Applications can be sent in at any time.

7) WIPO Fund for Indigenous and Local Community Participation

The General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has established a Voluntary Fund for Indigenous and Local Communities. This Fund directly supports the participation of representatives of these communities in the work of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of WIPO.

Beneficiaries from the fund are members of indigenous or local communities, or other representatives of customary holders or custodians of traditional knowledge or traditional cultural expressions. They are to be selected from already accredited IGC observers by an Advisory Board appointed from WIPO member states and indigenous observers. The Voluntary Fund is devoted entirely to funding their travel and living expenses to enable them to take part in the sessions of the IGC held in Geneva and other related activities. A fast-track procedure has been also set up to accredit WIPO observers. Funding applications for the next session of the IGC must be received by the WIPO Secretariat 60 days before the commencement of their previous session, which is due to take place in June or July 2007.

8) The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund -Education Grants for Women from Developing

Countries

Each year, the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) awards grants to women from developing countries engaged in graduate studies in the United States or Canada. The applicants must be at least 25 years of age, must have demonstrated a commitment to work for the benefit of women and children in the developing world, and must plan to return to their countries within two years of receiving the grant. Since 1983, the MMMF has awarded 95 grants totalling $733,400 to women from 50 countries. The MMMF awards up to six grants of approximately $11,000. Applicant must be a national of a developing country that is currently eligible to borrow from the World Bank who is a resident of the U.S. or Canada1. 9) Science in Society Journalism Award

The awards are for outstanding investigative or interpretive reporting about the sciences and their impact for good and bad - especially the kind of critical, probing article that would not receive an award from an interest group.

The National Association of Science Writers (NASW) will award separate cash prizes of US$1,000 for writing judged best in each of these five categories: newspaper, magazine, broadcast, book, and web. Winners and their publishers/broadcasters will also receive certificates.

Any writer (or team) is eligible to submit not more than three entries in each category. Material may be a single article or broadcast, or a series. Series will be considered to be single entries. Work must be written or spoken in English, intended for the lay person, and first published or broadcast in North America between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006. The publication or broadcast date will be governing. Book entries must have a 2006 copyright date. Web-based materials that supplement work first published in print or broadcast are not eligible on their own and should be submitted with print or broadcast entries. The original of a story transmitted by a news service will be eligible. Winners of last year's awards and individuals who have won three times are not eligible. Closing date is 1 February 2007.

10) Research Grants for Environmental Economics issues in Africa

The grant will fund research projects for up to a maximum amount of US$12,500 each. Members of the research team of funded projects will also enjoy further support through technical and scientific mentorship mechanisms and participation in Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA) research workshops and other events.

CEEPA encourages research proposals that focus mainly on the broader environmental economics and policy in African countries. Proposals that seek to suggest alternative strategies, policies and programs to reduce present and future environmental burdens in African countries as well as proposals whose results would lead to improvement in the monitoring and measurement of environmental phenomenon are also encouraged.

CEEPA also particularly welcomes proposals contributing to development of new methods and extensions of the theories of natural resource and environmental economics. Collaborative arrangements for joint studies with members of sister departments are strongly encouraged, in which case additional funding will be considered.

Eligible candidates include all researchers working in the field in eastern, central and southern Africa. The research committee, in consultation with the secretariat and resource persons will apply the criteria given below in evaluating new proposals:

• Policy relevance - whether the question being proposed is potentially useful to policymakers, academic community or civil society;

• Academic merit – whether the research objectives are clearly set out? Is the proposed methodology the right one and is it feasible? Is the relevant literature cited and correctly interpreted? What are the novel features in the proposal? and;

• Collaborative arrangements for joint studies with members of sister departments – in this case the research committee may consider additional funding for more than the above individual grant amount.

Closing date for application is 1 February 2007.

11) The Bonneville Environmental Foundation

The Bonneville Environmental Foundation is dedicated to restoring watershed ecosystems throughout the Pacific Northwest and Renewable Energy Program. The organization aims at by applying rigorous project standards and supporting only long-term and science-based restoration initiatives, they invest our resources in projects with the greatest potential to produce positive ecological improvements. There are no specific deadlines for grant application; the organization reviews the applications periodically.

12) Call for Small Grant Fund project proposals - Ramsar Convention on Wetlands

The call for proposals is now being made for the 2007 cycle, with a deadline of 30 June 2007 for application and with a decision by the Standing Committee around end of the year. The current edition of the "Small Grants Fund (SGF) Operational Guidelines", which includes complete information and the required forms, is now available on the Ramsar Web site in Word and PDF formats, as well as directly from the Secretariat. The Secretariat's regional teams also offer an advisory service to help with the preparation of suitable proposals, for which drafts should be submitted to the Senior Regional Advisors by 15 April 2007. Eligibility is restricted to countries on the List of Aid Recipients established by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), effectively meaning developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Projects may be proposed and implemented by any agency, NGO, or individual.

Readers can also find lists of the successful project proposals for each year since 1992 and news reports of successfully completed projects, which may provide useful tips as to the kinds of projects and approaches most often selected for assistance, on the Ramsar’s Web site.

13) Conservation, Food and Health Foundation

The organization supports research and through targeted grants to help solve specific problems, the Foundation helps build capacity within developing countries in its three areas of interest.

The geographic focus of the Foundation is the developing world. Preference will be given to organizations located in developing countries or to developed country organizations whose activities are of direct and immediate benefit to developing countries. The Foundation does not consider the states of the former Soviet Union or former eastern bloc countries as within its geographic focus.

The Foundation supports field research and related research activities, training, and technical assistance efforts that: help conserve viable ecosystems and protect biological diversity in developing countries; train Third World personnel in conservation and protection of resources, with an emphasis on technical and scientific training. If the Foundation invites a full proposal, the deadlines for submission of full proposals are March 1 and September 1.

14) West African Research Center Travel Grant

The West African Research Center in Dakar, Senegal is offering travel bursaries which may be used assist in attend and present papers at academic conferences, to visit libraries or archives that contain resources necessary to the applicant's current academic work or to travel to a research site.

Upon completion of their research, grantees are required to submit a detailed report of their work and findings. This report will subsequently be published in the biannual West African Research Association (WARA). A deadline for application is March 15, 2007.

15) The Russell E. Train Education for Nature Program

The Russell E. Train Education for Nature Program (EFN) caters conservation leaders in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. EFN supports promising conservationists through a number of programs.

16) NATO-Collaborative Linkage Grant

Collaborative Linkage Grants (CLGs) provide opportunities for collaboration on research projects to members of research teams in universities or research institutions in countries of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and the Mediterranean Dialogue.

To be eligible for support a project must be specific and in one of the Priority Research Topics, and the collaboration should be between scientists in NATO countries and NATO's Partner countries of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council or scientists of the Mediterranean Dialogue countries. Applications may be submitted at any time, although upcoming deadlines for submission of applications have been set as 1 March.

The National Geographic Society awards grants for scientific field research and exploration through its Committee for Research and Exploration. Applications are generally limited to the following disciplines: anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, biology, botany, geography, geology, oceanography, palaeontology, and zoology.

Applicants are expected to have advanced degrees (PhD or equivalent) and be associated with an educational organization or institution. Independent researchers or those pursuing a Ph.D.-level degree may apply, but awards to non-PhD applicants are rare. Funding is not restricted to United States citizens. Researchers planning work in foreign countries should include at least one local collaborator

22) Royal Society Pfizer Award

This prestigious international award, sponsored by Pfizer Ltd, is designed to reward scientists at an early stage of their research career and to promote capacity building in the developing world. The 2007 award is open to any research scientist working in Africa, making an innovative contribution to the biological sciences including basic medical science that has led to a sustainable positive impact on Africa. Up to £60,000 will be awarded as a grant in order for the recipient to carry out a research project that is linked to an African centre of scientific excellence, which would normally be a University, or equivalent research centre. £5,000 will be given as a prize to the recipient.

Nominations can be made by senior academics and members of National Academies of Science. Nominations consist of statements from the nominator outlining the candidate’s scientific record, suitability for the award and impact in Africa, and a proposal by the nominee for the research project on which to spend the grant. Closing date for nominations is 21 February 2007.

Given growing support by governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to expedite the implementation of smaller projects, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved procedures to streamline processing and financing of medium-sized project proposals (MSPs) specifically in relation to environment programs. MSPs are limited to a maximum of $1 million in GEF funds. 24) The Felix Scholarship

This scholarship competition is open to candidates who are either Indian nationals, or are from sub-Saharan Africa, and who are under 30 years of age, have at least a First class in their first degree, and (for Indian nationals) have never studied outside of India. Candidates from India will also have to demonstrate financial need and must return to India upon completion of their studies. The competition is open to students’ applying for either taught Masters or Research degrees.

The Felix Scholarship competition comprises: Six awards for students from India that pay fees at the international rate and a stipend (about £12,000 in 2006-7) One award for students from sub-Saharan Africa that pays fees at the international rate and a stipend (about £12,000 in 2006-7). Application process:

• Candidates must hold an offer of a place at the University by the closing date.

• Candidates must be nominated by their department to the Student Financial Support Office by the closing date.

• In the event of more than one candidate applying from a School, the Head of School will be asked to rank candidates, up to a maximum number of 5. This ranking will be advisory for the Selection committee.

The Selection Committee will shortlist candidates for interview. For Indian nationals, interviews take place in India in front of panel acting on behalf of the Felix trust. 25) UNESCO-VOCATIONS PATRIMOINE Fellowships 2007

UNESCO has launched the selection process for five new Fellowships for World Heritage Site Managers offered through the UNESCO-VOCATIONS PATRIMOINE Programme. Professionals involved in the management, safeguarding and development of World Heritage sites as well as young people intending to pursue a career in these areas are invited to submit applications to UNESCO before 31 March 2007. The UNESCO-VOCATIONS PATRIMOINE World Heritage Site Managers Programme aims to enhance the capacity of professionals presently working or intending to work in the management, conservation and promotion of World Heritage sites.

Application forms are available at the Web site. Applicants should submit their completed applications to their country’s official national liaison body for UNESCO. This is usually the National Commission (for the list of National Commissions, see ‘Communities’ section at http://portal/unesco.org), which will select a maximum of two candidates from each country. 26) Borlaug Leadership Awards

The Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (LEAP) awards up to $20,000 to outstanding MSc or PhD students (enrolled in either U.S. or home country universities) from USAID-assisted countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The awards support internships/thesis research of up to 12 months at a CGIAR international agriculture research center and also need to link a U.S. university mentor with a scientist at a CG Centre.

The fellowship program is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to enhance the quality of thesis research of graduate students from developing countries who show strong promise as leaders in the field of agriculture and related disciplines as defined by Title XII. LEAP is part of the overall Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture. The LEAP program will support engaging a mentor at a Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) system center to support and enhance the thesis research and mentoring experience.

The geographic focus region for the current Request for Applications (RFA) is sub-Saharan Africa. Borlaug LEAP Fellowships are awarded twice a year (March 15 and October 15) but can be submitted any time during the year. 28) Sixty PhD positions at Hannover Biomedical Research School

Hannover Biomedical Research School in Germany, as part of Hannover Medical School (MHH), invite applications for around sixty (60) PhD studentships, to commence in October 2007. The three-year study programs, taught in English, are aimed at post-graduates in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine as well as those from Life Science fields. The Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund provides fellowships for scholars whose lives and work are threatened in their home countries. 36) BP Conservation Programme - Research Fellowship Program

The Research Fellowship Program (RFP), administered by the Wildlife Conservation Society-International Conservation’s Training and Capacity Building Program, is now receiving some support from the BP Conservation Programme. It is a small grants program designed to build capacity for the next generation of conservationists through supporting individual field research projects that have a clear application to the conservation of threatened wildlife and wildlife habitat.

The WCS RFP supports field research in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Traditionally the RFP has not supported research in North America, Australia, or Europe, or their territories. However, the RFP has just begun to accept applications from Native Americans (US) and First Nation Peoples (Canada). Proposals are submitted in a standard format for two annual cycles with deadlines on March 1 and September 1. They are reviewed for suitability by WCS Africa, Asia, Latin America and Caribbean, and Marine Conservation Regional Programs, and then sent for peer review.

Conference: "Integrating Environmental Sustainability & Development in East Africa" May 3­4, 2007, Nairobi, Kenya.

The conference is part of the plans for the formation of an East Africa wide professional body ­Ecological Society of East Africa (ESEA). The conference will be held at the National Museums of Kenya on May 3-4, 2007. A conference coordinating committee composed of ecologists from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda is currently working on the conference programme and details. Tentatively, the conference will have keynote speakers, discussions and business sessions.

The theme of the conference is: Integrating Environmental Sustainability and Development in East Africa. The key topical areas to be addressed thus far identified include: Invasive species; Climate change; Habitat loss and fragmentation; Ecology and policy; and Business and ecosystems

Young Scientist Travel Awards

International Young Scholar Network for Earth Systems Science, Bristol, UK, June 2-5, 2007

AIMES is a Core Project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Project (IGBP). Approximately, 25 young scholars (within 10 years of PhD) will be supported to attend the Young Scholar Network (YSN) meeting, pending funding.

This small workshop will focus on understanding decision making on land-use issues, in order to move towards modelling these processes in Earth System Models. We encourage interdisciplinary applicants from the natural and social sciences, economics, engineers and scholars from the humanities with research interests in the Earth system. The goal of the YSN workshop will be a manuscript reviewing the state-of-art in decision-making in land-use modelling and its impacts on

biogeochemistry and climate from an Earth’s System perspective, and prioritise future research topics.
