MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Mr Peter Karamoshos Mid Year Examinations Mid-Year examinations will be held in during Week 8 of Term 2 for students in Years 8 to 11. Students in Year 11 will only sit examinations for those subjects which are examinable at the end of Year 12. Students in Years 8 to 10 will be expected to sit examinations for English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Greek and English as an Additional Language. Examinations, along with the other types of assessment during the semester, help to build a complete picture of student progress and development. The process of preparing, sitting and reviewing examinations also reinforce other skills for students. It assists with their organisation, prioritising time and summarising in the lead up to the examination, strategies on how to best tackle the questions when sitting the examinations and then reflection afterwards. Examinations should not be seen as a negative aspect of learning, rather, an opportunity for development and skill building. Year 12 Jackets

The Year 12 students are excited to finally receive their 2016 Year 12 jackets for 2016. Athanasia Angelo, our College Cap-tain and Ruby Leventeris, our College Vice-Captain are to be commended for coordinating with the clothing company to organise design, costing and delivery. Year 12 students will be allowed to wear their College jackets on three days of the week; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. On Wednesdays and Fridays, students are expected to wear their formal College uniform as they need to attend a Chapel service and Assembly.

Music Ensemble Students Wanted! If you play an instrument or have a desire to learn and would like to connect with musicians, then please come and join the St George College Music Ensemble. Rehearsals are held Monday’s at lunch time and Monday’s after school until 4:00pm. For further information please contact Miss Andreacchio (8159 8100). Open Boys Knockout Soccer The Open Boys Knockout Soccer team played their first group stage match against Gleeson College on Thursday, 19 May. With a few key players injured, the team had to find top up players two days before the match. The first half saw Gleeson College take a convincing 4-0 lead but to the credit of the boys, they lifted in the second half and contained the opposition, losing 5-0. The team will continue to practice and prepare for their next round match against St Michaels College. Open Girls 5-a-Side Indoor Soccer

In week 2, SGC participated in the Western Zone Open Girls 5-a-side Indoor Soccer Competition. The day started with a strong 4-1 win over Underdale High School. The second game saw the girls win with an impressive 12-1 win over Islamic College. The last game of the round was a tough battle against Henley High School with the girls losing 3-1. Unfortunately, the team finished third on goal difference and will not advance to the finals. All the girls played brilliantly; every player scored a goal and showed positive teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day.

Saturday Morning Soccer Finally the Saturday morning soccer competitions have begun! This year, the College have an Under 6, Under 8 and Under 13 team competing in the North West Junior Soccer Association competition. All three teams have made a brilliant start to the season with convincing wins and positive teamwork and sportsmanship skills being displayed. For the first time, the College have an Open Girls Soccer team competing every Saturday morning in the South Australian Catholic Secondary Girls; Sports Association. The team is comprised of year 9-12 female students and have begun the season with 1 win and 1 loss. The team train every Wednesday after school under the experience of old scholar, Stella Bakopanos as coach. We wish all the teams representing SGC all the best for the season as they continue to proudly represent and showcase the excellent skill level and sportsmanship as students of St George College.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Miss Stephanie Kosmetos

Mid-Year Reception Enrolments are currently open for our 2016 Mid-Year Reception intake, which allows an extended transition into school for children who turn 5 after 1 May 2016. Mid-Year Reception provides an invaluable opportunity for little ones currently in an Early Learning Centre, who are not quite ready for January start into Reception but are now ready for some additional challenges in their learning. St George College Mid-Year Reception offers a six term transition into a more formal school year environment. It will provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences within a nurturing, inquiry-rich, responsive classroom within the heart of the Junior Campus. Some pre-Reception children are ‘almost’ ready for the next step in their learning journey. To support and encourage the learning of these children, the mid-year intake begins full time attendance at school in Term 3, catering for children who turn five years of age between 1 May and 1 October, enabling them to experience three semesters (18 months) of our school-based Reception program. The opportunity to be part of this exciting learning opportunity will provide each student with access to developmentally appropriate learning challenges that will differ from their current Early Years setting, whilst still providing a scaffolded environment that is responsive to their individual needs. Please contact me on 8159 8117 if you would like to know more and to discuss ways in which we can work together to give your child the very best head start to learning.

Life Education In Week 3 the Reception students were lucky enough to visit the Life Education Van and participate in the ‘Harold’s Surprise’ program. Through fun and interaction, the students learnt about aspects of a healthy lifestyle and the tools they need to help them make positive choices. The children loved learning about healthy food choices, how to keep themselves safe and what happens to their bodies when they exercise. All of the children had a wonderful time and even had time for a cuddle with the infamous Harold the Giraffe!

Tuesday, 24 May 2016

Earlier this week the Parents and Friends of St George College hosted Souvlaki Day across both campuses. The weather was perfect, the sun was shining and everyone was looking forward to a tasty lunch… and no one was disappointed! It’s no easy task to cook 650 souvlakia and we thank the self-proclaimed 'dream team' of chefs which comprised of Nicky, Matt, George, Bill and co for their hard work. We had more than 15 Committee Members assist us on the day as well as the support of a number of student leaders. It takes great effort to plan in advance and many hands on the day to put on such an event and we sincerely thank everyone for dedicating their time. Our volunteers are rewarded by interacting with our fabulous students, establishing life-long friendships amongst each other and having a heap of fun along the way! The community spirit of St George College is unique and this is demonstrated by the invaluable ongoing support that we receive from our students, staff and parents – thank you all!
