I arrived in Los Angeles in 1986 from Sydney Australia where I had been living. I knew only one person in the whole of Los Angeles. But — given to me by my amenco teacher in Sydney — I had in my possession a slip of paper bearing the name and address of a “respected” amenco and classical Spanish dance teacher in LA — Roberto Amaral. I called him immediately. Meeting him was a delight, and taking his classes, I found the inspiration and the camaraderie that eased my transition into this overwhelming city.

Soon I began producing plays — each in a di erent rented “intimate” — fewer than 99 seats — theatre. And then I met Stephen Sachs, who was Managing Director at one of them. It seemed to me that he would be the perfect producing partner, and I was right about that!

In 1990 the theatre on Fountain Avenue became available. We jumped for it and moved in on April 1st. In August we presented Roberto Amaral and his company, Fuego Flamenco. The show was a huge hit, full of energy and much appreciated by theatre and dance members alike.

It was Roberto who inspired me to continue presenting amenco, introduced me to the best amenco artists in Southern California and guide me in solidifying The Fountain’s amenco programming. He understood the importance of providing amenco artist with the opportunity to perform in a theatrical setting, providing amenco the status it serves and the opportunity to be appreciated by Southern California audiences as a great art form. I am indebted to Roberto for sharing his artistry as a performer, his mastery as a teacher and his generous friendship.

For over three decades scores of dancers, musicians and singers have studied or worked with Roberto Amaral, known as “El Maestro” to his students. He has not only nurtured countless artists’ talent but also given them the opportunity to share two signi cant cultural traditions of Spain — Classical Spanish music and dance and Gypsy Flamenco — with Southern California audiences.

It is my particular joy to honor Roberto Amaral at Forever Flamenco 2014. I will always be grateful for his friendship and for all he has contributed to my life.

Roberto Amaral began his professional career at the age of 17, and has since achieved worldwide acclaim as a dancer, choreographer, singer, composer, artist and master teacher. From 1968 through 1976, he enjoyed success as principal dancer and guest artist with many of the world's foremost Spanish dance companies. With the companies of Jose Greco, Jose

Antonio, Ciro, Alberto Lorca, Rafael de Cordoba and Antonio Ruiz, Roberto toured extensively throughout Europe and the Americas. Also during this early period of his career, he laid groundbreaking musical history as co-founder, co-lead vocalist, writer, arranger and choreographer of the legendary band CARMEN. It was the rst musical group to ever combine amenco with rock/pop music both audibly and visually,

performing alongside such musical luminaries as David Bowie, Jethro Tull, ELO and Santana. As a television performer, Roberto has been a featured dancer and choreographer on numerous programs, most noteworthy being The Academy Awards (twice), The Tonight Show, The Barry Manilow Special and

the Madrid based Antologia de la Zarzuela. In 1981, he collaborated with choreographer Walter Painter on the television special Lynda Carter's Celebration. For this collaboration Roberto received the prestigious EMMY AWARD honoring his contributions as amenco consultant and lead dancer. Most recently in 2012, he and renowned choreographer Liz Imperio collaborated on an exciting amenco number which was featured on both the tv shows Q Viva and The Ellen Show. In 1977, Roberto formed his rst of several dance companies, each of which have greatly in uenced the pulse of amenco and classical Spanish dance in Southern California for the past 37 years. The critically acclaimed companies Danzas de Espana, Ballet Espanol de Los Angeles,

Espana Clasica and Fuego Flamenco are all companies Roberto has conceived, artistically directed and starred in. As a result, he has produced, staged, designed costumes, sets and lights for, and choreographed over 500 dance solos, ensemble pieces, amenco ballets, conceptual suites and production numbers. In his nearly 50 year career,

Roberto has been privileged to perform in many of the world's great concert halls, theaters, arenas and nightclubs. In the United States they include California's Hollywood Bowl, Greek Theatre, Forum, Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, Ahmanson Theatre, San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts ; New York's Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden; Las Vegas' Caesar's Palace, Sahara and Hilton International. In Europe he has performed at London's Victoria Theatre, Paris' Olympia Theatre, Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens, Madrid's Teatro

de La Zarzuela and Milan's La Scala Opera House. In 1990 Roberto began a critically acclaimed 7 year run of performances at the Fountain Theatre in Hollywood. It was during this time that many California Flamenco stars graced the Fountain Theatre stage alongside Roberto in his landmark company Fuego Flamenco. Also during this period, Roberto choreographed and worked alongside Deborah Lawlor on her prestigious theatrical accomplishment “The Women of Guernica” as well as the Fountain Theatre lmed documentary L.A. Ole!.

Roberto is and will always be known as a visionary, with a trademark style of dance, music and art that he wants to be regarded and remembered as unique, innovative and impressionable. As he continually strives to nd new and refreshing approaches to his artistic creativity, he has also found an enormous sense of grati cation and pride in his dedication to teach and mentor others. Many of his former students and proteges have gone on to become stars in their own right. This commitment to dance garnered Roberto the rst ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the Santa Barbara Flamenco Society in 2004. Roberto still looks forward to many more years of creating new projects and to the continued training and nurturing of his current and future students.

The Fountain Theatre salutes Roberto Amaral - dancer, choreographer, singer, composer, artist and master teacher. His lifelong dedication to the art of amenco has enriched

Southern California’s cultural landscape and secured Flamenco’s place within it.

I rst met Roberto forty years ago when he was asked unexpectedly by Luisa Triana to teach her advanced Flamenco class. I was a young student lucky enough to be present that night when Roberto, without any unnecessary fanfare, he

went about teaching a dazzling, modern Bulerías that left us dumbstruck. It was the 70s and he was stunningly handsome in black shoulder length hair, mustache and jeans. But it was more than that; it was his total and complete

mastery. He was unlike any artist we had ever seen. None of us realized then the scope of knowledge and insight that this forward thinking man would bring to the entire Los Angeles Flamenco community. His complete and total command of the art form was evident; Roberto Amaral literally jolted awake the Los Angeles Flamenco community and methodically

escorted us into Flamenco's future.

Since that day an innumerable number of students have been molded by Roberto in his legendary dance classes. Many of his students (like some of those performing tonight) have gone on to become professionals and teachers with

academies of their own. Some traveled abroad, taking with them the grounded technical foundation given to them by Roberto that rivaled even those of their peers in Spain. Others of us have returned to dance in a humbler way, and we too

thank you Roberto for dismissing misgivings about lost years and demanding from us what we love, but thought we could no longer do.

Forty years have passed in the blink of an eye. You continue to instill and perpetuate the legacy of excellence for which you are known. Because you never allow the standard to be compromised, the integrity of Flamenco in our community is

what it is today and it will be continued with pride, dedication and, most of all, with heartfelt appreciation by all of your students and all of those associated with you.

My congratulations as you are honored tonight maestro. We love you.

Sincerely,Ana María Suárez

Congratulations Roberto!Your dedication, discipline and talents have been an inspiration to so many including myself.

I thank you, I love you, I honor you. I am so happy for your recognition this evening. Enjoy the Love!

Under the guidance of Producing Artistic Director Deborah Lawlor, the Fountain is the premier venue for Flamenco music and dance in Los Angeles. The Fountain presented its rst amenco show in 1990 with Roberto Amaral's Fuego Flamenco. For the next two decades the Fountain has produced over 600 world-class Flamenco concerts on its intimate stage, eight seasons at the 1200-seat Ford Amphitheatre, many concerts at the 300-seat Gallery Theatre in Barnsdall Park, and has toured Flamenco projects throughout the Western United States. In 1996 the Fountain's program Sangre Nueva

“New Blood” showcased up-and-coming, young and talented amenco dancers. The Fountain's ongoing amenco series was o cially rechristened Forever Flamenco in 2002. A recent highlight includes presenting Maria Bermudez's company, Sonidos Gitanos, direct from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, at the Ford Amphitheatre, bringing to Southern California audiences an experience of the art form from its source and performed by some of the most renowned Gypsy amenco artists in Andalucia. Now in its 12th year, Forever Flamenco! at The Fountain remains a Los Angeles cultural landmark, highlighting amenco artists from Los Angeles, from across the United States, and around the world. Hailed by the LA Weekly as “LA's most signi cant venue for amenco”, Forever Flamenco at the Fountain Theatre is now enjoyed once a month and maintains the highest and most authentic level of amenco artistry available.
