FOREWORDOn behalf of NUS Student’s Cultural Activities Club, I am proud to

present our annual publication “The Stage”, which aims to showcase

our club and its highlights. This year marks the 10th year since the

formation of NUS CAC. For the past decade, we have grown in terms

of membership size and the diversity of our sub-club with two new ad-

ditions this year. NUS CAC has, and would always continue to uphold

our mission to promote cultural awareness amongst our NUS student

population. We have always prided ourselves as a dedicated

organization that seeks to groom young talents in the field of the arts

or management, whilst not neglecting students who are beginners.

Our magazine “The Stage” represents our will and determination to

promote cultural awareness and interest in the performing

arts. It also symbolizes the change and challenges that we had

overcome in the past decade and in the uncertain future, I have

confidence that through the passion, determination and drive of our

members, we would continue to overcome and reach greater heights.

The NUS Cultural Activities Club is one of the four major NUSSU constituent clubs in NUS which are not faculty-specific. We seek to promote cultural awareness amongst the student population in NUS, and to provide a plat-form where there are numerous opportunities for them to pick up new skills and showcase their talents.

In addition to the cultivation of cultural interest amongst its members, NUS CAC goes beyond that and through the running or large-scale projects like CAC+US and our CAC Social Camp, NUS CAC is an excellent platform for students to develop their leadership, interpersonal, and organization skills. With these soft skills that cannot be taught in a normal classroom setting, it thus extends a student’s educational scope. These are opportunities for incoming students to mingle and interact with their seniors and students from the other faculties, as well as to meet and befriend their fellow freshmen.

CAC consists of 11 sub-clubs:

OUR SUB-CLUBS

Angklung

BreakiNUS

Amplified The CAC Amplified has come a long way from its roots as a classical ensemble to its current incarnation of full bands, which includes electric guitars, bass, drums, as well as vocalists. Aside from performances within NUS, we have also performed at Holland Village, the River Hongbao for Chingay, and at the Esplanade outdoor theatre. Our music spans a wide range of genres: from heavy metal and rock to pop, funk and even Hokkien and Hindi songs, showcasing the versatility of our musicians.

Now under the CAC umbrella, NUS CAC Angklung Ensemble was established in the year 2007 after parting company from the Indonesian student organization, Perhimpunan Indonesia NUS. Despite our young age, we have already performed in various events, both inside and outside of NUS. The light learning curve of playing angklung and its uniqueness attract NUS students from all over the world.

BreakiNUS is a group of NUS undergraduates who seek to provide opportunities for interested members to develop their Bboying skills. We also conduct weekly trainings, organize regular workshops, while keeping a keen lookout for performance opportunities. Beginner and advanced classes conducted by the Dance Captain usually commence every academic semester. In addition, we occasionally bring in professional Bboys to hold extra workshops.

Jazzttitude

Lindy Hop

d’Hoppers NUS D’Hoppers was formed in 2005. We mainly conduct hip-hop dance lessons for its members, regardless of their dance background! Every semester, NUS D’Hoppers will hold Hip-Hop Dance (MTV-Style) courses at Introduction, Beginner and Advanced Beginner levels forinterested NUS students. Apart from the classes, NUS D’Hoppers has an advanced crew that performs for various organisation and events. NUS D’Hoppers aims to spread the love of dance to everyone.

Jazzttitude is a Street Jazz dance group under the National University of Singapore’s Cultural Activities Club. Fusing Hip Hop and contemporary Jazz techniques, we specialise in an elegant yet high energy dance style, uniquely branded by our creative and exciting instructor, Zee.

Currently with about 20 active members, we strive to advocate the conviviality of the dance. Danced to the rhythm of swing music and suitable modern pieces, Lindy Hop encompasses a myriad of jazz, Charleston, and many other swing steps. The club holds beginner sessions once every week. A Shim Sham course, associated with tap dance, has also been introduced . Lindy Hop also participates in performance events, especially major ones like Infusion and Cactus, as well as RunNUS 2011.

Salsa

Resonance

OUR SUB-CLUBS

Formed in 2001, Resonance is an a cappella CCA under the NUS Cultural Activities Club. We have members from diverse musical backgrounds, and we sing just about anything — from contempo-rary pop to choral, alternative rock to swing, and even the occasional techno tune. To date, our most satisfying achievements would include clinching the top position in the local National A Cappella Championships (2006 - 2008 & 2011), and our concert series, Vocal Obsession and The Inside Edition.

The NUS Salsa Club is a cozy community that pro-vides Beginner and Intermediate Salsa classes at a discount (both on and off campus) and manages the NUS Salsa Performance Team. We host popu-lar social nights within NUS and excursions to lo-cal Salsa clubs & parties around Singapore. Aside from Salsa, the other offerings of the Club include popular dances like Bachata and Zouk. The Club hopes to share the fun of Salsa with NUS as a dance not just for romance but friendship too. If you ever wanted to learn to Salsa, come join us!

Social&Ballroom NUSSNB was set up as a sub-club of NUS Cultural Activites Club (CAC) in year 1994. Through organising dance courses and performances, our club aims to raise the awareness of Social and Ballroom Dances in the NUS community. Our courses are taught by experienced trained professionals where you can enjoy more affordable rates compared to anywhere else. Our club also performs in both internal and external events and also engages in dancesport competitions.

Funkstyle

Voices

Our Latest Addition!!!

Voices gathers students who have a love of singing and aims to improve the performance standards of its members. Members have the access to several performing platforms, and are given various opportunities to perform both on and off-campus. Besides training potential vocalists, we also have our own instrumentalists to support the vocalists. Our instrumentalists enjoy working constructively in a band environment, and enjoy the challenge of meeting the audience’s expectations for every song they perform.

NUS Funkstyles seeks to provide a platform for students in the NUS community to explore the funk dance styles of popping and locking in a supportive environment. Through weekly structured classes by qualified instructors, stu-dents will be equipped with the basic techniques in the dance styles. Informal practice sessions will also be held to help foster self-exploration and collaborative learning in a non-structured environment. Members can look forward to opportunities in participating in performances, dance competitions and battles within the subclub and in the local street dance scene.

CAC MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The management committee is made up of a group of NUS students with the aim of helping and providing direction for the club. We serve as a bridge between the sub-clubs and organizations, both internal (like NUSSU), and external. We ensure that all sub-clubs are represented and spoken for on the different platforms. In addition, we manage the various logistics and administration, thereby providing a conducive environment for the sub-clubs to train and cultivate their passions. Aside from managing the eleven different sub-clubs, marketing and publicity efforts are also carried out by us, so as to secure sufficient funds and exposure for the sub-clubs.

CAC Social Camp

The CAC social camp provides freshmen with a good starting point to kick-start their fulfilling years in NUS. By giving them the opportunity to meet different people and engage in activities that require teamwork with their new-found friends, the freshmen will be prepped with the necessary social skills to step into their university life easily and adapt faster.

Secret PaLFrom mere strangers to friends. Who could say no to a mysterious secret pal? :D

Simply CulturalThe camp also promotes the understanding of history and other cultures, from none other than our own NUS Museum!

This year the camp is named Camp Estrella, while revolving around the theme of “2012 - THIS IS IT!”. With a fullhouse of 210 freshies and council-lors, Camp Estrella has been a huge success as new friendships are forged through our myriad of fun-filled activities. In addition to that, following our traditions of CAC Social Camp, we have also brought back Introduct-ary dances by some of our sub-clubs such as d’Hoppers and Salsa, to teach our fellow campers how to dance while introducing them to the wonder-ful world of performing arts.
