FORT POLK, La. — As I foundmyself heading the wrong directionon the Washington D.C. Metro at 6p.m. on Mar. 10, I started wonderingwhat I was doing and longing to behome with myhusband, sonand dogs. Aftergoing thewrong directionfor fifteen min-utes, I decided to get on with it. Ijumped off the train at the next stopand got on one heading in the cor-rect direction. After a full day oftravel from Fort Polk, to our nations’Capitol, I arrived at my hotel offDuPont Circle just in time for a com-plimentary glass of wine.

I was here for a training opportu-nity, the Congressional OperationsSeminar offered by the GovernmentAffairs Institute at Georgetown Uni-versity. I would be attending classacross the street from the U.S. Capi-tol in the Rayburn House of Repre-

sentatives Office building for theweek. I was excited for the opportu-nity to learn more about the legisla-tive process, interact with my electedrepresentative and his staff and im-prove my understanding of the rela-tionship between the Army, the leg-islative branch of government — allto improve my role as a public af-fairs specialist on the community re-lations team.

Early on in my career I learnedthe importance of taking advantageof opportunities when they presentthemselves. Opportunities come in a

variety offorms: Train-ing, work orvolunteerism.New and chal-lenging assign-

ments on the job or in personal en-deavors with continuing educationalunits, certifications and advanceddegree programs are all opportuni-ties I’ve taken advantage of alongthe way.

Joining the Army was an opportu-nity I took advantage of, too. Aftercollege I discovered a bachelor’s de-gree in history and sociology wasnot as valuable as the tuition I paidwould suggest. Despite a degreefrom a prestigious university, Ifound myself struggling in the realworld. In 1996 the Army had a pro-

gram called student loan repayment,and you best believe that was an op-portunity I eagerly took. The Army,to me, was not only a means to payoff my student loan debt, but a wayfor me to serve my country and gaindiscipline and direction that I wasdesperately needing.

Unlike my friends from college, Iwas an Army veteran and spousewho moved around the country andworld with my Soldier. Every moveforced me to reinvent myself profes-sionally and sell my skills to my nextemployer by illustrating how what Idid at a previous installation and or-ganization translated to the new or-ganization. Every opportunity filledholes in my resume and showed po-tential employers that not only do Ihave what it takes to enhance theirorganization, I am willing and ableto take the necessary steps to im-prove myself professionally. My re-sume is long and varied. I’veworked as a secretary, program oper-ations specialist, human resourcessupervisor, administrative officer, ca-sualty notification and assistancetrainer, an education counselor, pro-gram director and transition servicespecialist. Each job was unique andrewarding, but keeping up-to-dateon training was always important

Road repairsThe following road repairs are slated for

two areas of Fort Polk over the next fewmonths:

• The contract to repair Fourth Streethas a required completion date of May 24.Work includes shoulder repairs, culvert re-placement, removing asphalt, repavingwith new asphalt overlay and new pave-ment markings. The work will require clo-sures, detours and flagging operations tocomplete the repairs while ensuring safetyfor motorists and construction crews. Re-pairs are planned for three phases to mini-mize impact to motorists. Alternate routesare encouraged to minimize delays andtraffic congestion. At the completion ofFourth Street repairs, Mississippi Avenuerepairs will begin and include shoulderwork, crosswalks, milling, repaving andpavement markings.

• The contract to repair erosion alongLa. Hwy 467 has a required completiondate of June 6. Work includes repairing aslope failure just southeast of access controlpoint 2 and eroded sites between LouisianaAvenue and access control point 2. Theslope failure site requires a lane shift for in-bound and outbound traffic April 15-26 toensure safety for motorist and constructioncrews. Alternate routes are encouraged tominimize delays and traffic congestion.

Holocaust observanceThe Joint Readiness Training Center and

Fort Polk and the 519th Military Police Bat-talion host a Holocaust “Days of Remem-brance” observance Wednesday from noonto 1 p.m. at the Warrior Center. The themeis “Beyond Religious Boundaries.” Every-one is invited. For more information call531-1911.

SHARP golf eventIn conjunction with Sexual Assault

Awareness and Prevention Month, the FortPolk Sexual Harassment Awareness Re-sponse Prevention Program hosts a “DriveOut Sexual Assault” golf scramble Thurs-day at Warrior Hills Golf Course. Check infor the four-person team is from 8-9:15 a.m.the day of the event, with a shotgun start at9:30 a.m. Team members can be military,civilian or family members, but must befrom the same unit. Organizations may en-ter as many teams as they want. No mulli-gans. Rules of golf will be followed.

Air Force medics receive training at JRTC FORT POLK, La. — About 60 U.S. Air Force

medical personnel descended on North Fort PolkApril 5 to receive enhanced tactical care for casu-alties training.

Military and civilian instructors from Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital’s LearningCampus provided a Tactical Combat CasualtyCourse (TC3) for the medical providers and allcombatant Airmen providing support for JointReadiness Training Center rotation 19-06.

TC3 was created to teach evidence-based, life-saving techniques, and strategies for providing

the best trauma care on the battlefield.“This course has been in the making for a

while,” said Capt. Kimberly Raymond, BJACHeducation officer in charge. “It was created fromlessons learned.”

The course consisted of classroom, hands-onunder the guidance of an instructor and a realis-tic trauma lane.

“With the incorporation of the realistic equip-ment, this training enhances the readiness capa-bilities of the U.S. Air Force along with gettingthe Airmen ready for future joint environment,”said Lt. Col. Tom Naughton, Air Mobility Com-mand, Scott AFB, Illinois.

because moving was just a few years away. Ineeded to maintain my marketability and profes-sional credibility.

I’ve been extremely fortunate to have found avaluable and rewarding career with the Depart-ment of the Army alongside my Soldier withonly two brief periods of unemployment. Notfinding a job immediately after a permanentchange of station at Fort Riley and at Fort Polkwere opportunities for me to stay home with mynewborn son, earn a master’s degree, volunteerwith Army Family Team Building and the BoyScouts of America, and earn graduate certificatesthat have since helped me advance in my career.Both volunteer opportunities enabled me tobuild my resume. While volunteering at AFTB Ibecame a certified master trainer which led tomy job as Department of the Army Casualty Af-fairs trainer while stationed at Fort Carson, andmy time with the BSA gave me the social mediatraining and experience that helped me with mycurrent position.

Two years ago I took a new position at theFort Polk Public Affairs Office on the communityrelations team.

My professional and educational backgroundis not journalism, marketing or public relations,but experiences and training I’ve received priorto this assignment made me an attractive candi-date and I have proven my ability on this team. Ihad taken prerequisite courses through the civil-ian education system for my new career fieldwhich allowed me to begin taking advantageclasses available to public affairs professionals.

Public Affairs offers a large variety of centrallyfunded training opportunities for our career pro-gram — CP22. During my short tenure here Ihave taken advantage of two. Last year I com-pleted the Public Affairs Qualification Coursewhich consisted of six months’ worth of onlinecourse work followed by two weeks residency atFort Meade, Maryland. PAQC was challengingand helped me develop the journalism skills Ihad been lacking.

My most recent opportunity was a trip toWashington D.C. March 10-14 for the Congres-sional Operations Seminar. Wow. The last time Iwas in D.C. I was marching in the Cherry Blos-som Festival with my high school band thirtyyears ago. What an amazing and eye-openinglook at the inner workings of our governmentand how challenging it is for our elected leadersto get things done that are in the best interests oftheir constituents, while setting national policies,providing oversight to governmental agenciesand maintaining fiscal responsibly to tax payers.

I witnessed bills being introduce on the Senate

floor, visited with my state representative and hisstaff, sat in on the House Judiciary Committeemeeting as well as networked with other federalemployees from a variety of agencies from acrossthe country.

The seminar was four days long but felt likefour hours. Our instructors were senior fellowswith doctorate degrees, former Congressionalstaffers, journalists, lobbyists and former mem-bers of the House of Representatives.

I was one of only two public affairs profes-sionals in attendance. My classmates were budg-et analysts, grant writers, policy writers, and leg-islative coordinators for their organizations. Ilearned with employees from NASA, GeneralServices Administration, and Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention, the Library of Congress,the Social Security Administration, Drug En-forcement Administration and the departmentsof Homeland Security, Defense, Commerce andEducation.

After class I took the opportunity to visit theSmithsonian Air and Space and Natural Historymuseums, I walked the National Mall from theCapitol and visited the Washington, Jeffersonand Lincoln memorials. I explored the city andenjoyed delicious food from restaurants fre-quented by famous chefs I follow on Instagram. Irode the metro and listened to my favorite pod-casts each day during my commute and I en-joyed every minute of the experience during myshort visit.

Next year I hope to attend the GeorgetownSTRATCOM Planning in a Social Media World.As a Department of the Army civilian employee Ihave countless training opportunities and everytime I am able, I take advantage of them. Regard-less of where you work, who you work for oreven if you are not working right now, there arealways opportunities out there for self-improve-ment and professional development.

My advice: Take advantage of each opportuni-ty as it presents itself to you. It may lead to adream job one day.

FORT CARSON, Colo. — Three years ago, Sgt.Ana Lopez joined the Army to challenge herself.

“The military was something I was always in-terested in doing since I was 18 years old,” saidthe California native. “I was proud when I be-came a mechanic in the Army."

The wheeled vehicle mechanic with Golf Com-pany, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2ndInfantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Di-vision, said the Army matured her.

“I loved working on military vehicles andlearning their capabilities in different environ-ments,” Lopez said. “As my contract neared theend, I felt like although I enjoyed being in themilitary it just wasn't for me.”

With her mind made up to leave the military,Lopez began to think about the future.

“I was very nervous about my decision,” shesaid. “I knew I wanted to go back to school, butwhat about a job and bringing money to myhousehold? I was a bit worried.”

Those stressors, were not only felt by Lopez,

but by her Family as well.“A lot of Soldiers get out of the military and

they don’t necessarily know what to do next, andthat can cause a lot of problems,” said JulianaLopez, wife of Ana Lopez. “I was nervous thatwould happen to us.”

However, like every Soldier who transitionsout of the Army, Ana Lopez enrolled in the in-stallation’s Soldier for Life-Transition AssistanceProgram.

The SFL-TAP is a commander-funded pro-gram that provides transition assistance servicesto eligible Soldiers. Soldiers learn about jobsearches, career-making decisions, current occu-pational and labor market conditions, resumeand cover letter preparation, and interviewingtechniques.

“It was through SFL-TAP that I learned aboutthe program Changing Lanes,” Lopez said.

Changing Lanes, offered by Caliber Collision(that partners with SFL-TAP), is a no-cost, 18-week training program for service members andveterans who are leaving active duty and return-ing to the civilian life. Upon completion of theprogram, members are offered job placement op-

portunities across the U.S.“It's an amazing program; not only did I re-

ceive great training (and) a great job opportunity,but I was also able to get a job in California,where my Family and I wanted to return to,”said Lopez.

“Going through SFL-TAP and Changing Laneshas brought me comfort in my decision to leavethe Army.”

The sense of comfort that Ana Lopez felt alsohelped put her wife at ease.

“I am grateful the military has programs likethis and that (my wife’s) unit let her participatein it,” said Juliana Lopez. “I am excited for theboth of us."

Lopez said she is thankful for the opportuni-ties the Army gave her.

“The Army is a great place to learn aboutyourself and to grow as a person,” she said. “Iam grateful programs like SFL-TAP exist for Sol-diers. I hope everyone that goes through the pro-gram is willing to listen and take advantage ofwhat they offer.”

FORT POLK, La. — When I start-ed this book, I realized it was thefirst book exclusively on World WarII I have reviewed. This has notbeen an in-tentional ex-clusion. Ihave readdozens ofbooks onWorld War II, it’s just that out of thelargest CSA reading list ever, it actu-ally has a relatively low number ofbooks dedicated to this war.

As I looked at the title, I won-dered out of all the great books onWorld War II out there, why wouldthe Chief want us to read a bookabout the army of the Nazi regime,

and anarmy thatlost thewar?

Thatquestionwas an-sweredwithin thefirst fewchapters.While this isan historicalaccount, itdoesn’t read

like one. The author is a gifted andtalented writer that can take a sub-ject that has been written about inthousands of books with a fresh ap-proach, unlike the textbook style ofmany World War II history books.

The author, Robert Citino, is nostranger to the German army orways of war in World War II. He hasauthored several books on the sub-ject that have marked him as “theauthority” on the German army. Hemakes a point in the introduction toensure the reader this is not a “whatif” book that many authors of theGerman army in the war are oftenplagued by. In fact, in my opinion,his factual based and exhaustivestudy dispels many myths of theGerman army in World War II.

Citino takes aim at the mystiqueof Rommel, the notion of many thatGermany ever had a chance of win-ning the war (logistics and man-power alone make this almost animpossibility — at least for the goalsHitler had in mind), the train ofthought that the German army wassuperior in training, equipment anddoctrine, and, my favorite, the de-velopment of the “blitzkrieg.” Ilearned — as you will when youread this book — the Germans did-n’t invent it, nor did they even usethe term.

The blitzkrieg style of warfarewas developed in the interwar years

as a result of the stagnant and costlyprice of World War I. Mobile war-fare and a combined arms fightwere not exclusive to Germany andwere in development international-ly in the interwar years. The Ger-mans just validated it on a grand

scale firstand re-fined itbefore therest of theworld.

What I liked about the book mostwas how the author, using the Ger-man army of 1942 as a vehicle, man-aged to explore and weave togetherall three levels of warfare: From tac-tical, to operational all the waythrough strategic. Plus, he managedto take the reader through those lev-els and explain how they are all in-terrelated as well as the how andwhy decisions at every level, relateto the next. The read is an educationin cause and effect of the levels ofwarfare with a masterful writingstyle that educates the reader in aseamless and enjoyable way.

Many historians like to purportthe theory that Hitler and his med-dling with his generals lost the war.

The author points out that whilehe certainly didn’thelp it, the often-vaunted Germangeneral staff failedas well. While thegeneral staff be-came masters onthe art of opera-tional maneuver(the author ex-plains why), overconfidence and un-derestimation ofthe enemy as wellas a terrible intelli-gence system con-tributed to the de-struction of theGerman army — aswell as the Alliedforces. I thinkmaybe this is one ofthe reasons the Chief wants us toread this book. There is a lessonhere for the leader and staffer alike.

Conversely, one of the things thatintrigued me about this book wasthe discussion on what we now callmission command and they calledmission tactics. The German army’shighest successes came early onwhen individual commanders hadbeen empowered to exercise author-ity and exploit battlefield opportu-nities. As success and confidencegrew, operations became more andmore complex, and subsequentlymore controlled by higher com-mand, thus closing the door onwhat led to initial success.

Although I had read about the

German “mission command” cul-ture previously, one term I had nev-er heard used in reference to theGermans in World War II was re-vealed in this book. This term is onewe here at the Joint Readiness Train-ing Center and Fort Polk are famil-iar with: Decisive action. That’sright, we didn’t come up with deci-

sive action; theword and deedhave been aroundand in use formany generations.

The author saysit best in the bookas he quotes itfrom the Germanarmy field opera-tions manual of thetime: “The first cri-terion of the warremains decisiveaction. Everyone,from the highestcommander ondown to theyoungest Soldier,must constantly beaware that inactionand neglect incrim-

inate him more severely than anyerror in the choice of means.”

He goes on to sum it up in aquote: “The most essential thing isthe deed”.

If that alone doesn’t make youwant to read the book while here atthe home of the Joint ReadinessTraining Center — the epicenter ofmodern-day decisive action — thenI don’t know what will. If you readnothing else from this book, pick itup and read chapters one throughfive. I think the lessons and the“meat” the CSA wants us to get outof this book are in these chapters.

You not only will be glad youdid, but be better for it. If you checkit out from Allen Memorial Library

Army G-4 offers tips to prepare for peak moving season

WASHINGTON — Up to 60,000 householdgoods shipments for Soldiers, civilians and Fami-ly members are expected to be moved this sum-mer, and U.S. Army Logistics, Headquarters De-partment of the Army G-4, is providing some tipsto help make your move less stressful.

Move planning and executionPeak season for permanent change of station

begins May 15 and runs through Aug. 31, withthe busiest weeks being May 15 through July 4. Soldiers, civilians and Families should avoidmoving around the holidays and during the lastweek of May and June, if possible. Avoiding thistimeframe will help prevent late pick-ups andchanges to deliveries.

Advanced planning and preparation is key toa successful move. Upon receipt of orders, Sol-diers should immediately create an account or lo-gin into Defense Personal Property System, viawww.move.mil; upload orders and complete allshipment applications for the move. 

The next step is to contact or visit the trans-portation office to ensure all preparatory stepswere successful. By getting to the transportationoffice quickly, customers will have a betterchance of scheduling the move convenient forthem. Scheduling movers is done on a first come,first served basis and during the peak season,there may be limited availability of packing andshipping dates. 

After logging in or creating an account, servicemembers can view customer satisfaction scoresfor moving companies.

On the day of the move, Soldiers, civilians andFamilies should do the following: 

• Refrain from scheduling other activities dur-ing moving days, as the packing and movingprocess can take the entire day. Make it your pri-ority. 

• Monitor how packers and movers are per-forming. If you have a question, call the trans-portation office. The Army is working to improvethe HHG movement process by increasing thenumber of quality assurance inspections. 

• Save the contact information for the movingcompany and quality assurance inspectors. 

• Obtain a copy of the inventory and makesure to identify and annotate high-value items.

• A 24 hours a day, seven days a week U.S.Transportation Command toll free hotline will beoperational and published in May for Soldierand Family household goods (HHG) problemresolution.Additional information and detailed tips can befound in “It’s Your Move” located atwww.move.mil.

Storage of HHGAfter a Soldier’s shipment arrives at destina-

tion they are authorized short-term storage for 90days. Short-term storage provides enough timeto secure a new home. If necessary, a Soldier canrequest an additional 90 days through the trans-portation office. 

Long-term storage is authorized for overseastours, retirement or separations and trainingcourses that are longer than 20 weeks. In somecases single Soldiers and dual military couplescan use long-term storage during a deployment. Move entitlements

If conducting a first PCS move, moving to orfrom a foreign country or making a final retire-ment or separation move, Soldiers must schedule

a counseling appointment with the transporta-tion office to review entitlements. 

The moving process begins with orders, whichidentifies a Soldier’s entitlements based on theirrank, dependent status, basic information ontheir tour and restrictions on what can bebrought to the next duty station. 

Rank, dependent status and sometimes loca-tion determine a Soldier’s weight allowance. Sol-diers are responsible for staying within thatweight allowance. If the shipment weight is closeto their weight allowance, the Soldier can requesta reweigh at destination with the transportationoffice. 

Professional books, papers and equipment,also known as pro-gear, are defined by the JointTravel Regulations as items needed for the per-formance of official duties. 

The maximum weight authorization for progear, regardless of rank, is 2,000 pounds. Spousesmay request an additional weight allowance upto 500 pounds if the pro gear is required for em-ployment or community service. Pro gear doesnot include homeschooling supplies. 

A spouse’s pro gear request must be submittedto the transportation office for approval beforethe scheduled pick up. Before a Soldier’s packand pick-up date, they should separate all theirpro gear from HHG, as it must be weighed sepa-rately and annotated on the inventory sheets.

If a Soldier’s HHG are not picked up or deliv-ered on the agreed upon dates, he or she can filean inconvenience claim with the moving compa-ny for out of pocket expense supported by paidreceipts. Soldiers can contact their transportationoffice for additional information. 

Personally procured move (also known asdo-it-yourself move)

Soldiers must obtain PCS orders before theyare authorized to conduct a PPM or DITYmove.  Before conducting a PPM or DITY move,Soldiers must receive counseling and approvalfrom their transportation office. Soldiers willhave the option of moving HHG with a POV,rental truck or hiring a commercial moving com-

pany, but all methods require full and emptyweight tickets. 

Upon move completion, a Soldier must submitreceipts, weight tickets, and contracts. All paper-work must be dated after the published date oftheir orders, or they will not be reimbursed. Ad-ditionally, taxes and insurance are non-reim-bursable for equipment rental contracts and re-ceipts. 

As an incentive, the Soldier receives 95 percentof the maximum amount that the governmentwould pay to have the HHG moved. If it costsless for Soldiers to move personal property them-selves, they will keep the difference. This incen-tive is based on the weight that a Soldier trans-ports, not to exceed their authorized weight al-lowance. 

The PPM or DITY estimator tool, found onwww.move.mil, under the helpful links section,calculates an estimate of the maximum amountthat the government would pay to have a mem-ber’s HHG moved. 

Final stepOnce any move is complete Soldiers should

complete the on-line customer satisfaction surveyto rate the moving company. The survey ratingresults keep the moving companies accountable;it helps everyone in the moving process — theArmy, personal property offices, moving compa-nies and U.S. Transportation Command — im-prove the process for the Soldier and civilian. A list of customer satisfaction survey scores forall moving companies are on the Defense Person-al Property System customer landing page, ac-cessed via www.move.mil.

If a Soldier cannot complete the survey, theU.S. Transportation Command Help Desk shouldbe contacted at (800) 462-2176. After dialing thetoll-free number, Soldiers should select option 5and option 1.

Friendly fire fighters facilitate Fort Polk fire station tour

FORT POLK, La. — From their perspective,any day kids get to go on a field trip is probablya fun day. Two K-4 (kindergarten) classes of ex-cited 4 and 5 year-olds from Faith Training Chris-tian Academy, Leesville, had one of those “fun”days as they toured the Fort Polk Fire Depart-ment April 10.

The students explored fire trucks, toured thefire station and took turns spraying the fire hose(with a little help).

Sara Newman, K-4 teacher, said the field tripoffered students the chance to experience andlearn new things about firefighters and the jobthey do, while also absorbing basic fire preven-tion skills. Newman said it made an impressionon her students when Fort Polk firefighters ex-plained the parts of their uniforms and describedand demonstrated the importance of each pieceof equipment.

“What the firefighters sound like when theyhave their gear on is the first step to help kidsunderstand what to expect if they are in a fireand see a firefighter in their home,” she said.

Krista Henry, K-4 teacher, said if you are 4 or 5and your house is on fire, you are going to bescared.

“There’s smoke and alarms and then you seethis big guy in strange gear coming at you. Of

course they are going to be frightened,” she said.“But now they know what to expect and that thefirefighter is there to help them. That could makea huge difference.”

Matthew Chapman, Fort Polk firefighter, toldthe kids, “The worst thing you can do is hidefrom us in that situation. You want to get out ofthe house that is on fire and we are there to helpyou do that.”

Rusty Buentello, Fort Polk fire inspector, saidtours teach kids basic fire safety and that firefighters are there to help them.

“If they are in trouble, we want them to run tous when they see our trucks and uniforms, notaway from us,” he said.

Buentello said his favorite thing about con-ducting the tours is watching the happy expres-sions on kid’s faces as they explore fire trucks.

“It’s wonderful to see,” he said.Courtney Whitehead attended the tour with

her daughter, Abbie-Mae. Although she said Ab-bie-Mae knows what to do if a fire happens, sheis glad her daughter has an opportunity to learneven more fire safety.

“She has been very excited about this tour,”she said.

Whitehead said her daughter loves water andcouldn’t wait to spray the fire hose.

Abbie-Mae said it was really fun.

Capt. Chris Rosado, Joint Readiness TrainingCenter Operations Group, attended the tour withhis son Weston. He said it’s good to spend thiskind of one-on-one time with him.

“He had a ball. He’ll be talking about this tourfor the next two weeks,” he said.

After taking the tour, Lincoln Dowden, anFTCA student, said being a firefighter would be agood job.

The field trip was also part of the FTCA’s ef-fort to promote the idea of teaching kids aboutcommunity service.

Newman said kids gave teddy bears to thefirefighters to hand out to other kids when theygo out on emergency calls.

“We are trying to teach them a spirit of kind-ness and compassion in giving back to the com-munity. We explained to them that when kidstheir age have been through an accident or a fireand have maybe lost everything they own, theteddy bear might bring them some comfort,” shesaid.

Henry said it makes their students feel betterto pass that love and joy forward.

Newman said felt the tour was a huge success. “I want to thank Fort Polk and the firefighters

for allowing us to visit post for the tour,” shesaid.

“Fort Polk was very welcoming,” said Henry.

VPSB, BPSB host NMSI Advanced Placement exam study sessions

DeRIDDER, La. — The Vernon and Beaure-gard parish school boards teamed up this schoolyear to host Advanced Placement exam studysessions — funded by the National Math and Sci-ence Initiative (NMSI) grants in their respectivedistricts — for students from Leesville, Pickering,Rosepine and DeRidder high schools.

Throughout the school year, the school boardsrotated AP study sessions in their schools — withEnglish AP study sessions taking place at LHS,math AP study sessions at DHS, and science APstudy sessions at RHS.

There are three study sessions for each subjecteach school year — one in the fall and two in thespring.

“It’s helped get the students ready. Not only isit reinforcing what they’re learning in the class-room, but it’s also helping prepare them for theAP exams at the end of the year,” said CassadyHickingbottom, DeRidder High School assistantprincipal and AP program coordinator.

The four-hour AP study sessions took place ondesignated Saturdays and consisted of the NMSIinstructors reviewing content and test-takingstrategies to prepare the students for their AP ex-ams.

“It gives students a different perspective onthe content from what their teacher has done.These NMSI instructors are people who havetaught AP for a long time and have been verysuccessful with their AP programs,” said RenitaPage, a VPSB curriculum director overseeing theAP program. “They know what to tell those kidsto look and study for.”

Eleventh graders Caleb Crouse of LHS, SylviaCini of RHS and Da’Laishia O’Neal of PHS — allof whom are military-connected students fromFort Polk — found the AP study sessions benefi-cial.

Crouse, who attended study sessions for his

AP English language and composition, AP biolo-gy and AP computer science courses, said the ex-perience was educational.

“I acquired more knowledge and strategies forthe AP exams,” Crouse said. “They were helpfuland readily prepared me for all of my AP tests.”

Cini, who will be taking the AP biology andAP English language and composition exams thisspring, said the study sessions prepares studentsto approach and complete AP exams successfully.

“They give me a different view on how to takethe test and what works best for me,” Cini said.“They are going to allow me to pass the AP test.”

O’Neal said she appreciates that the AP studysessions were available to students in the area.

“I’m grateful because not every school gets thechance to have people come to help us out,”O’Neal said. “They have refreshed the informa-tion that my teacher taught me.”

Page said VPSB and BPSB AP teachers also at-tended the study sessions so they can learn aswell.

Lela Magee, LHS AP physics I teacher, said sheenjoyed listening to the physics presenters.

“Through observation of and conversationwith the presenters, I gained insights into how topresent topics in different ways,” Magee said.“The study sessions are an excellent resource.”

Joshua Beard, DHS AP physics I teacher, saidthe AP study sessions are helpful and appreciat-ed.

“I get to see how other teachers teach and ex-plain material to evaluate my own methods. Isometimes get shown that I have misconceptionsas well,” Beard said. “I am glad we have them.”

Beard and Magee hope their students tookaway valuable lessons from the study sessions.

“I hope they gained confidence in what theyknow and a better understanding in what theyare struggling with,” Beard added. “As long asmy students can learn and get better — even inonly one thing — it was worth it.”

The districts paired up to make the AP study

sessions easier to coordinate with NMSI andmake as many of them accessible to the studentsthey serve.

And Page and Hickingbottom said their coor-dinated efforts went smoothly and the studentsenjoyed learning from one another.

“Students can see that they’re right on track,and what’s going on in the other schools,” Hick-ingbottom said. “It gave them more opportuni-ties to hear a national level expert cover specificareas.”

In addition to funding the AP study sessions,NMSI sends AP course instructors from acrossthe nation for each AP class VPSB and BPSB stu-dents are taking in the English, math and sciencecategories.

One of NMSI’s goals is to provide “military-connected students from coast to coast with well-trained teachers, challenging Advanced Place-ment coursework, and strong foundations inSTEM subjects that will prepare them for the rig-ors of college and career, whether military orcivilian.”

Fort Polk Progress helped both districts securetheir NMSI grants to make these AP study ses-sions possible.

“We’re happy to be a part of helping studentsin their pursuit of academic excellence,” saidMichael Reese, Fort Polk Progress chairman.“We’re grateful to NMSI for this grant and toVPSB and BPSB for making the AP program apriority so these students will be successful inhigh school and beyond.”

Page and Hickingbottom hope the study ses-sions have a lasting impact on their students.

“The students are very dedicated. They werecommitted to the study sessions,” Hickingbottomsaid. “We’re hoping it helps our students when itcomes time to take their AP exams because wewant to enable our students to have as much col-lege credits as possible when they graduate highschool.”

FORT POLK, La. — Every four years, sports-minded patriotic Americans turn their eyes —and often, their hearts — toward the Olympicgames. One of the more popular events — andthe favorite of little girls and boys all across thecountry — is gymnastics.

With their gazes glued to the television watch-ing the tiny tumblers twisting and turning inhopes of earning elusive gold, these young fansoften dream of the day when they might taketheir places on the podium and listen to “TheStar Spangled Banner” as a medal is placedaround their neck with its promise of fortune andglory.

For most, realism eventually sets in and only afew reach the Olympic pinnacle. But that doesn’tstop the mighty mites from giving it a shot.

Fort Polk’s Directorate of Family Morale, Wel-fare and Recreation’s Child and Youth SportsProgram offers those who want to try their handat gymnastics a variety of classes where partici-pants can burn off a little energy while givingtheir moms a short break, and maybe, find outthey have the skills to compete.

Kayla Walker, program associate and gymnas-tics instructor for CYS, said gymnastics is a greatway to help youngsters stay active.

“It works on their coordination, agility and de-velopmental skills,” she said. “It’s also a safeplace to explore and take risks without gettinghurt.”

Walker explained.“If a child was to jump off of a chair or make a

tumbling run at home, they might hurt them-selves,” she said. “Here we have padded floorsand supervision, and no sharp corners whichmeans less chance of getting hurt.”

Walker said she’s noticed those who partici-pate in gymnastics seem to have more confidencein their physical abilities.

“Their bodies are stronger and they usuallyhave fewer injuries,” she said. “We offer them or-ganized chaos.”

Sgt. 1st Class Dennis and Mindi Bolelli havetheir daughter, Madison, 3, enrolled in the ages3-5 gymnastic class. Mindi said the class hashelped Madison with her socializing skills.

“This has been a great experience for Madi-son,” she said. “They are being taught skillswhile having fun. They don’t even realize theyare learning.”

Mindi said she’s noticed improvement inMadison’s hand-eye coordination.

“She’s ahead in her development,” she said.“As long as she likes it, we’ll keep her in it.”

Capt. Richard and Savanna Nicholson haveenrolled their daughter, Evelyn, 3, in the sameclass.

“I homeschool our kids so this is her activity,”Savanna said. “Her sisters have their physical ed-ucation activities, and this is Evelyn’s.”

Savanna said Evelyn enjoys the class.“She’s always excited when I tell her it’s class

time,” Savanna said. “It’s helped with her physi-cal development and increased her strength. Sheclimbs everything at home like a little monkey.”

Layla Whiddon, 4, is another regular in the 3-5year old class. Her mom, Leah, said this is justLayla’s second week of class.

AVERY ISLAND, La. — Throughout history,men have worked to build gardens for the de-light of their subjects or Families. From the hang-ing gardens of Babylon in Iraq to the Chateau deVersailles in France, kings, queens and otherrulers used gardeners and slaves to tame natureand create beautiful landscapes of flora and fau-na to surround their palaces.

One such “king” was Edmund McIlhenny, afood lover and avid gardener who called AveryIsland in south Louisiana his home. Avery Islandsits atop an 8-mile deep dome of salt onLouisiana’s Gulf Coast.

In the 1860s, McIlhenny, a banker by trade,was given pepper seeds from Mexico and Cen-tral America. He planted the seeds near hishome, fell in love with the spicy flavor of thepeppers they bore and decided to try his hand atcreating a pepper sauce.

Using the reddest peppers, he mixed themwith Avery Island salt and aged the mash for 30days. He blended the mash with French whitewine vinegar and aged the mixture for another30 days. He bottled the mixture and tried it outon family and friends.

McIlhenny’s sauce proved so popular that hedecided to leave the banking business and makepepper sauce full time. He labeled the sauce“Tabasco,” received a patent in 1870, and soon af-ter became recognized as the king of peppersauce.

Tabasco Pepper Sauce is still made much thesame way McIlhenny first made it. His relativescontinue the tradition by continuing to growtasty peppers on Avery Island.

Tabasco Pepper Sauce is labeled in 22 lan-guages and sold in more than 160 countries. It isincluded in Soldiers’ rations and adorns the ta-bles of the finest restaurants in the world. Visi-tors to the Tabasco factory on Avery Island canwatch as the pepper sauce is bottled, labeled andpacked off for shipping.

After a tour through the Tabasco factory, astop at the company gift shop is a must. Thereyou’ll find the Tabasco label on just about every-thing you could imagine.

You’ll also have a chance to sample Tabasco-flavored ice cream, soda and chili. Oh, and don’tleave without trying a bowl of jambalaya —Tabasco style.

After dining on such delicious fare, what’sneeded is a good walk. Just across the road fromthe Tabasco compound is another contributionfrom the McIlhennys to Avery Island — JungleGardens. Rivaling the gardens built by Europeanand Eastern monarchs, Jungle Gardens, foundedin the 1890s by Edmund McIlhenny’s son, E.A.McIlhenny, was created to support another McIl-henny creation — Bird City.

E.A. McIlhenny founded the ornithologicalcolony — home to thousands of snowy egrets —after plume hunters slaughtered the bird to nearextinction. The younger McIlhenny gatheredeight young egrets, raised them in captivity onAvery Island, then released them in the fall to mi-grate across the Gulf of Mexico. The next springthe birds returned — with a few friends — andthe migration continues today.

WASHINGTON — The pain inMarjorie Ann McLaughlin’s feetfrom plantar fasciitis made walkingdifficult, and the inactivity led to acycle of back and knee pain. Thisphysical pain led to relationshippain with her spouse and family be-cause she couldn’t cook dinners ormake it upstairs most nights tosleep in her own bed. The formerAir Force sergeant couldn’t evenwork in her garden, a favorite pas-time.

McLaughlin didn’t like the wayprescription opioids like hy-drocodone made her feel. Herprovider recommended pain man-agement services available at Walter

Reed National Military MedicalCenter — services with a commongoal of easing patient discomfortwhile also reducing or eliminatingthe use of opioid medications.

“Providers continually collabo-rate to help ensure patients get theright level of care and treatment,”Lt. Col. Sharon Rosser said. Rosser,director of the Army Comprehen-sive Pain Management Program atDefense Health Headquarters inFalls Church, Virginia, leads effortswith other clinical experts to opti-mize pain management practicesacross the Military Health System.

According to Rosser, embeddingprimary care pain champions andadditional providers like physicaltherapists, behavioral health con-

sultants, and clinical pharmacistsinto primary care is just one way theMHS is delivering evidenced-basedpain management for patients withacute and chronic pain.

“We’re dedicated to supportingour health care professionals witheducation and training so they mayform effective, individualized pa-tient treatment plans for acute andchronic pain,” Rosser said. “MHSleaders continue to look for oppor-tunities to increase access to evi-dence-based pain care and non-pharmacologic therapies.”

Providers reinforce the lifestylebenefits of a nutritious diet and dai-ly movement in the presence of bothacute and chronic pain, Rosser said.Problems caused by injury, illness or

surgery can include tense muscles,psychological stressors, and emo-tional reactions to pain or poorsleep — a combination that can con-tribute to persisting pain, called apain cycle. MHS pain managementservices can offer patients alterna-tive treatments to help.

Dr. Christopher Spevak, directorof the opioid safety program for theNational Capital Region, and a painphysician at Walter Reed, said themore options for patients, the better.Pain clinics may offer proceduressuch as trigger-point massage, dry-needling, advanced injections likeepidurals and facet blocks, spinalcord stimulation and acupuncture.

WASHINGTON — Coronary artery disease isthe most common type of heart disease and theleading cause of death in the United States forboth men and women.

Arteries carry oxygenated blood throughoutthe body including to the heart muscle. Overtime, plaque can build up in the arteries, whichharden and constrict blood flow to the heart.When the heart does not get enough blood, thebody’s response is angina.

Angina is experienced as a feeling of tightnessor pressure in the chest that can also radiate outto the neck, jaw, back or shoulders. Women mayalso experience nausea, shortness of breath or fa-tigue. Angina can be exercise-induced or causedby other symptoms of heart disease.

“Any time the heart’s demand for oxygen isgreater than the supply, there is a chance forangina,” said Dr. Jamalah Munir, a cardiologist atFort Belvoir Community Hospital. “Angina mostcommonly occurs during physical exertion, suchas walking quickly up a hill or flights of stairs.”

Increases in blood pressure or stress, abnor-mally fast heart rhythms, severe illness or anemiacan also raise the risk of experiencing angina, sheadded.

Preventing coronary artery disease is the goal,Munir said. This means eating a whole-food,plant based diet with minimal animal products,as well as exercising regularly, sleeping well, re-ducing stress and refraining from smoking.

Even with these preventive measures, exercisecan induce angina even in presumably healthyindividuals.

“When you exercise, your heart needs moreoxygen and nutrients,” said Munir. “If the de-mand outstrips the supply, the result is angina.”

Someone with angina would experience a dullsensation rather than a sharp pain, which typical-ly comes on gradually during exercise and canimprove with rest, she added. Nitroglycerin, amedication that relaxes the arteries and increasesblood flow, can alleviate chest tightness and pres-sure.

“Should you experience persistent anginawhile at rest or at lower levels of activity, seek

medical care immediately for a possible heart at-tack,” Munir cautioned.

The temptation might be to think that if exer-cise induces angina, the safest course of actionwould be to remain on the couch. Munir dis-agrees.

“When it comes to daily exercise, it doesn’thave to be intense or done all at once,” Munirsaid. “Some people complain that they can’tmake it to the gym for a full workout, but if theywalk for 10 minutes after each meal, that adds upto 30 minutes a day.”

Moderate exercise combined with strengthtraining, stretching, meditation or yoga practiceis all important to cardiovascular health, sheadded.

A physician can test for indicators of coronaryartery disease — high blood pressure, abnormalheart rhythm or high cholesterol — that con-tribute to angina. Medications can stabilize or re-duce these symptoms when combined with otherhealthy habits such as regular exercise.

“If the combination of medication and lifestylechanges isn’t effective, invasive procedures suchas coronary stents and open heart bypass surgeryare options to consider,” said Munir.

To protect health, especially the heart, “dietaryand lifestyle modification are the cornerstone ofprevention and treatment of coronary artery dis-ease,” she added.

“Incorporating small changes into yourlifestyle can make a big difference.”

These therapies, along with yoga,biofeedback, cognitive behavioraltherapy, mind-body techniques, iceor heat and electrical stimulationmodalities (TENS, Alpha-Stim, Cal-mare and Inter X) can make a bigdifference in a pain cycle.

“The literature continually dem-onstrates there is very minimal indi-cation for opioid use for chronicpain outside of end-of-life and can-cer-type pain,” said Spevak.

Pain and treatment experiencesvary across individuals due to thesensitivity of nerves and brain reac-tions. For McLaughlin, the path to-ward relief included sessions with apain management psychologist totalk over treatment options. Recom-mendations included yoga and anon-opioid muscle relaxant. Theprovider also introduced her toacupuncture, which she saidopened up “a whole new world.”

“We should consider date nightat acupuncture,” said McLaughlin,joking with her husband who suf-fers from shoulder problems.“Acupuncture is everything.”

While acupuncture helpedMcLaughlin sleep, other treatmentsworked better to treat Navy Petty

Officer 1st Class Peter Kendrick’supper back problems. Years of whathe calls “wear and tear” had takentheir toll. Deteriorating discs werepinching nerves and causing pain inboth arms.

Kendrick was prescribed an opi-oid for pain, which helped. Howev-er, like McLaughlin, he didn’t likethe way it made him feel.

Kendrick’s provider referred himto a pain management team, wherehe started receiving epidural steroidinjections a month or two apart. Af-ter receiving his fourth injection, hereports, “the pain comes back inter-mittently, but it’s by no means as in-tense as before.”

The steroid shots helpedKendrick handle physical therapy –just one of a variety of non-medica-tion options offered to manage hispain. He was also given Alpha-Stimelectrotherapy, a high-tech productresulting from research by the De-partment of Defense, Department ofVeterans Affairs, National Institutesof Health and others. Alpha-Stimuses the Cranial Electrotherapy Sys-tem and addresses pain, anxiety, in-somnia and depression by sendinga current via ear clips to nerve cells

in the brainstem. After 10 treat-ments, Kendrick was prescribed aCES unit that he uses at home al-most daily for up to an hour. “It re-ally helps with sleep,” he reported.

Spevak believes the news media’sattention on the national opioid epi-demic and its potential dangers maylead some people to seek alterna-tives.

“At Walter Reed, we’re able to of-

fer treatments to active duty servicemembers that may be difficult to getin the civilian sector due to reim-bursement constraints,” Spevaksaid.

Kendrick said the breathing andmeditation he learned from yogahelps him concentrate on somethingelse other than the pain.

“It breaks the pain pattern,” hesaid.

LEESVILLE, La. — Leesville’s Sew CrazyQuilt Guild — established in 1991 and currentlyboasting 44 members — hosts its fifth biennialQuilt Show in conjunction with May Fest.

The show takes place at the Family WorshipCenter Gym, 601 East Mechanic St., May 3 from10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and May 4 from 10 a.m. to 4p.m. Tickets for the quilt show are $3 per adultand children under 12 get in free.

The guild created an “Opportunity Quilt” forthe show, which was pieced and quilted bymembers with Oriental fabric. The intricate pat-tern on the quilt is called the pineapple pattern.

Opportunity quilt raffle tickets — $1 per ticketor $5 for six tickets — are available for purchaseat the event. The drawing for the quilt will be at 4

p.m. May 4.All quilts presented at the show are made by

guild members. About 75 to 100 quilts and hand-made items will be on display in the show. Tencategories of quilts will be judged and displayedto view with ribbons attached. The show willhave “un-judged” quilts displayed in a separatearea. There will also be some quilts for sale.

Door prizes will be announced throughout thetwo-day show. Winners have to be present to re-ceive the prize.

Support includes active directory account creations, shared drive permissions, local and network printer installs, soft ware uninstall/reinstalls, and basic soft ware and network troubleshooting. More detailed support may be required in troubleshooting de-tailed organization specifi c soft ware, network printer/multifunctional devices and the ability to identify/replace faulty warranty supported hardware.
